Association between gender diversity and substance use experimentation in early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Gender diversity, encompassing gender identity beyond traditional binary frameworks, has been associated with substance use during adolescence. However, there is a paucity of studies that consider different dimensions of gender diversity. This study investigates associations between multiple dimensions of gender diversity and substance experimentation in early adolescents. METHODS: Data from 10,092 adolescents aged 12-13 years from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were used to assess the relationship between gender diversity and substance experimentation. Ge

Exposure to ammonia solution due to substance use: a retrospective study from the French poison centres database (2009-2018).

INTRODUCTION: Ammonia solution (ammonium hydroxide) is used to convert cocaine hydrochloride to freebase cocaine. Due to its causticity, unintentional exposure to ammonia in a substance use context can result in injury. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of unintentional oral and buccal ammonia solution exposure in a substance use context. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using the French poison centres database over a 10-year period (2009-2018). RESULTS: A total of 1,546 files were extracted, and 263 substance users were included. There was a signifi

Substance use patterns, quantities, and associated risk factors in women with polysubstance misuse.

Polysubstance use (PSU), the use of two or more substances proximally, is highly prevalent and has amplified the risk for morbidity and mortality. However, PSU patterns and associated risk factors are not well characterized. This may be especially relevant to women who are known to be vulnerable to stress/trauma, craving, pain, and anxious and depressive symptoms as associated risk factors for PSU. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to characterize substance use patterns in women who regularly used cocaine, opioids, marijuana, alcohol, benzodiazepines and/or nicotine and were

Promising immunomodulators for management of substance and alcohol use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The neuroimmune system has emerged as a novel target for the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs), with immunomodulation producing encouraging therapeutic benefits in both preclinical and clinical settings. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we describe the mechanism of action and immune response to methamphetamine, opioids, cocaine, and alcohol. We then discuss off-label use of immunomodulators as adjunctive therapeutics in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, demonstrating their potential efficacy in affective and behavioral disorders. We then discuss in detail the

Critical Dialogue and Capacity-Building Projects Reduced Alcohol and Substance Use in a Randomized Clinical Trial Among Formerly Incarcerated Men.

Background: Rates of alcohol and/or substance use (ASU) among residents of predominantly Black and marginalized communities are similar to ASU rates in White communities. Yet ASU has worse consequences in predominantly Black and marginalized communities (e.g., higher incarceration). Objective: We randomized participants to one of 16 intervention conditions using a 24 full factorial design to optimize a multilevel intervention reducing ASU among 602 formerly incarcerated men with substance-use-disorders (SUD). Candidate intervention components included (1) critical dialogue (CD; six weekly 2-ho

Structural and Functional Dysregulation of the Brain Endothelium in HIV Infection and Substance Abuse.

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) injury and dysfunction following infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) enables viral entry into the brain, infection of resident brain cells, neuronal injury and subsequent neurodegeneration leading to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Although combination antiretroviral therapy has significantly reduced the incidence and prevalence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and increased the life expectancy of people living with HIV, the prevalence of HAND remains high. With aging of people living with HIV associated with increased comorbidit

Novel Uses of Methadone Under the "72-Hour Rule" to Facilitate Transitions of Care and Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction in an Outpatient Bridge Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Federal regulations restrict methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment to licensed opioid treatment programs (OTPs). However, providers in other settings can administer methadone for opioid withdrawal under the "72-hour rule" while linking to further care. Prior work has demonstrated that methadone initiation in a low-barrier bridge clinic is associated with high OTP linkage and 1-month retention rates. We describe 2 other novel applications of the 72-hour rule in which methadone withdrawal management facilitated linkage to inpatient hospitalization and outpatient buprenorp

Violence against children and later substance use in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Globally, one in two children experience violence; experiences which may lead to later risky behaviors such as substance use. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), however, the association between childhood violence and substance use remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the association between childhood violence and substance use among LMIC youth. PARTICIPANTS: Data from the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS) in eight LMICs (2017-2019) were analyzed, comprising 33,408 children and young adults (ages 13-24). METHODS: Exposure variables incl

Cannabidiol and addiction.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been investigated for several therapeutic applications, having reached the clinics for the treatment of certain types of epilepsies. This chapter reviews the potential of CBD for the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). We will present a brief introduction on SUD and current treatments. In the second part, preclinical and clinical studies with CBD are discussed, focusing on its potential therapeutic application for SUD. Next, we will consider the potential molecular mechanism of action of CBD in SUD. Finally, we will summarize the main findings and perspectives in

Characteristics and clinical challenges in patients with substance use disorder in palliative care-experience from a tertiary center in a high-income country.

BACKGROUND: Access to palliative care is often limited for challenging and vulnerable groups, including persons with substance use disorders. However, with optimized healthcare options and liberal substitution policies, this patient group is likely to increase over the upcoming years, and comorbidities will also influence the need for palliative support. Here, we aim at analyzing characteristics and specific challenges associated with substance use disorders (SUD) in palliative care. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients diagnosed with substance use disorder that were treated at o

A Systematic Review of Lifestyle-Routine Activity Theory in the Context of Direct-Contact Sexual Victimization.

Studies have extended and applied lifestyle-routine activity theory (L-RAT) to direct-contact sexual violence (SV). Yet, operationalizations of theoretical concepts-exposure, proximity, target suitability, and guardianship-have not been consistent across studies within this context, and therefore the ultimate conclusions on the robustness of the theory remain an open empirical question. In this systematic review, we compile scholarship on the application of L-RAT to direct-contact SV to identify how core concepts have been operationalized as well as their association with SV. Studies met the i

Postpartum Hepatitis C Linkage to Care Program in a Co-located Substance Use Disorders Treatment Model.

PURPOSE: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is increasingly prevalent in pregnancy and among people with substance use disorders (SUD). Highly effective treatments are now available for chronic HCV. Qualifying for HCV treatment often requires preauthorization and several clinical criteria, including laboratory assessment of liver function and other infectious diseases and liver imaging to assess for fibrosis. Linkage to care (LTC) models have been shown to assist with obtaining the necessary clinical information (laboratory assessment/liver imaging) and improving HCV treatment rates in non-pregnant indiv

The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence.

The mental health and substance use treatment experiences of racially and ethnically minoritised women who have experienced sexual violence is not well understood. To address this we conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies. Our search strategy included electronic searches of 18 databases and grey literature, citation tracking and reference list screening. Studies were eligible if they presented qualitative data from racially and/or ethnically minoritised women or girls, who had experienced sexual violence at any age and described their experiences of receiving t

Criminalization and coercion: sexual encounters with police among a longitudinal cohort of women who exchange sex in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: The criminalization of sex work and drug use creates unequal power dynamics easily exploited by police. Women who exchange sex (WES) in settings around the globe have reported coerced sex and sexual assault by police, and some have reported police as paying clients. Little research has examined nuances underlying WES's sexual interactions with police. METHODS: A cohort of cisgender WES (N = 308) was recruited through targeted sampling in Baltimore, Maryland and completed a structured survey every 6 months for 18 months. Follow-up surveys included detailed questions about recent se
