PURPOSE: To overview the complications involving extensor apparatus of the knee following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and to summarize which are the lines of treatment available and their reported outcomes in literature.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of several databases was performed using as basic keywords "complications after TKA", "extensor mechanism disruption", "periprosthetic patellar fracture", "quadriceps tendon rupture", "quadriceps tendon rupture" isolated or combined with other terms by using Boolean operators. The methodological quality of each article was also evaluated usin

Anomalies of muscles of the upper extremity are frequently encountered and anatomic variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle-tendon unit are frequently reported by anatomists and clinicians. FDS anomalies can be in forms of tendon interconnections, substitution, absence or muscle belly variations and most of the times the anomalies of FDS produce few clinical symptoms. We report a rare and unusual case of FDS anomaly with a unique and large muscle belly. The deformity is type V according to the classification of Elliot et al. in which the muscle belly extends to four digit

Simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon ruptures are extremely rare, and even more rare in patients without systemic disease. We describe bilateral simultaneous patellar tendon disruptions in the absence of systemic disease or steroid usage, with one tendon disruption at the inferior pole and the other an intrasubstance tear. The different locations of the ruptures are also exceedingly rare, as only two cases of non-identical ruptures have ever been reported. We also review all bilateral patellar tendon rupture case reports from English and German literature.

BACKGROUND: Reinsertion of the acutely ruptured distal biceps is the preferred method of treatment for most patients and is designed to restore flexion and supination strength. It is not clear which, if any, method of fixation is superior or whether a 2-incision or single-incision approach is associated with fewer complications or better outcomes.
HYPOTHESES: (1) There is no difference in biomechanical performance between currently used fixation methods, (2) there is no difference in incidence of complications between the 2-incision and single-incision approach, and (3) there is no difference

INTRODUCTION: Extensor mechanism ruptures might be easily overlooked and misdiagnosed, and delayed diagnosis of quadriceps tendon rupture is frequent. However, the literature recommends early surgical repair within 72 h.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This paper describes a new simple clinical diagnostic test that directly evaluates the integrity of the distal 5 cm of the quadriceps tendon itself. It consists of inserting a needle in the tendon, proximal to the suspected rupture and mobilising the knee joint.
RESULTS: The suspected ruptured quadriceps tendons with a positive 'needle' diagnostic test

Flexor tendon rupture after distal radius fracture is very rare. The authors reported two cases. The first case had flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture. The other had flexor pollicis longus and multiple finger flexor tendons rupture. The authors propose two modes of mechanism of tendon rupture after distal radius fracture.

The technique of endoscopic repair of an acute rupture of the distal biceps tendon with a single anterior portal incision (1.5 cm) and fixation with an EndoButton (Acufex, Smith & Nephew, Andover, MA) is described. The ruptured biceps tendon is delivered through the portal wound and sutured to the EndoButton with a No. 5 Ethibond suture (Ethicon, Somerville, NJ). Endoscopic visualization of the tract of the avulsed biceps tendon guides the endoscopy cannula to the radial tuberosity. The endoscopy cannula serves to protect the adjacent neural structures while using the guidewire and drills for

A 39-year-old patient was presented with, to our knowledge, the first ever diagnosed case of extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture as a result of scapholunate (S-L) dissociation. Arthroscopic findings showed that the dorsal aspect of the S-L ligament was ruptured and severe synovitis was revealed around the S-L joint. Direct observation revealed synovium at the rupture site of the EPL tendon. After careful resection of this synovium, an aperture in the S-L joint was observed. Thus, it was considered that the synovium in the S-L joint was connected to the rupture site of the EPL tendon,

A 12-year-old boy experienced rupture of the extensor pollicis longus 1 month after closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of a markedly volarly displaced fracture of the distal radius and ulna. Late extensor pollicis longus rupture is a rare complication in children, especially following a markedly displaced fracture.

We report the case of a patient in whom the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus tendons to the index, middle, ring and little fingers ruptured 6 years following malunion of a distal radius fracture. There was no history of rheumatoid disease. The distal ulna was displaced volarly and perforated the volar wrist capsule. There was a cumulative biological effect from chronic synovitis and mechanical compression due to the ulnar head impinging upon the normal anatomic course of the flexor tendons to the ring and little fingers. We discuss the physiopathology of this rare

A case of mallet thumb, with a closed rupture of the extensor pollicis longus at its distal insertion, is presented. Conservative treatment resulted in a near normal function.

Anatomic reattachment of the distal biceps tendon is well established but bears the risk of complications including loss of motion and nerve damage. We questioned whether nonanatomic repair by tenodesis to the brachialis muscle is able to accomplish similar results with less risk. We compared the results of anatomic repair with suture anchors (n = 6) with the results of nonanatomic repair (n = 8). Anatomic reattachment of the biceps tendon can restore full power of flexion in most cases as determined by isokinetic muscle tests (mean, 96.8% compared with the contralateral side). Nonanatomic rep
