Dentapen versus traditional syringe infiltration - which LA technique is preferred by patients?

Design Single-blind randomised cross-over trial.Intervention The study compared solution deposition pain of a maxillary lateral incisor infiltration between a computer-controlled local anaesthesia delivery device (Dentapen) and traditional syringe. The Dentapen was given with a slow flow rate of 1.8 mL/162 sec and ramp-up mode, and the traditional syringe infiltration was delivered at a flow rate of 1.8 ml/60 sec. Patients were randomly assigned to a sequence to receive both interventions at two separate appointments, with each participant acting as their own control. Patients rated the pain o

Comparison of regional brain deficit patterns in common psychiatric and neurological disorders as revealed by big data.

Neurological and psychiatric illnesses are associated with regional brain deficit patterns that bear unique signatures and capture illness-specific characteristics. The Regional Vulnerability Index (RVI) was developed toquantify brain similarity by comparing individual white matter microstructure, cortical gray matter thickness and subcortical gray matter structural volume measures with neuroanatomical deficit patterns derived from large-scale meta-analytic studies. We tested the specificity of the RVI approach for major depressive disorder (MDD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a large epidemi

Tele-neuropsychological assessment tools in Italy: a systematic review on psychometric properties and usability.

BACKGROUND: The current COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly catalysed a shift towards remote assessment in neuropsychological practice (tele-neuropsychology, t-NPs). Although the validity of t-NPs diagnostics is gaining recognition worldwide, little is known about its implementation in Italy. The present review by the Italian working group on tele-neuropsychology (TELA) aims at describing the availability, psychometric properties, and feasibility of t-NPs tools currently available in Italy. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followe

11β-Hydroxylase (CYP11B1) gene variants and new-onset depression in later life.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative exposure to high glucocorticoid levels is detrimental for the brain and may have particular implications in later life. A feature of late-life depression is increased cortisol secretion. Variants in the CYP11B1 gene, which codes for the enzyme responsible for cortisol synthesis, could influence risk of late-life depression, but this hypothesis has not been examined. We investigated the associations between variants in the CYP11B1 gene and late-life depression, taking into account history of depression and potential sex-specific effects. METHODS: We assessed depression i

Air pollution and self-perceived stress and mood: A one-year panel study of healthy elderly persons.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have suggested that air pollution is associated with depression and anxiety symptoms. Here, we investigate the association between personal exposure to NO2 and perceived stress and mood in a panel of healthy elderly persons. METHODS: In a one-year panel study, we included 20 healthy volunteers (10 male-female couples aged 58-76 years) with air pollution and health parameters measured every two months (120 observations). We measured personal exposure to NO2 in the previous 5 days, perceived stress using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and positive a

Effect of oral THC pretreatment on marijuana cue-induced responses in cannabis dependent volunteers.

BACKGROUND: The current study tested whether oral Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC: 0-, 10-, and 20-mg) pretreatment would attenuate polysensory cue-induced craving for marijuana. METHODS: Cannabis dependent participants (7 males and 7 females, who smoked on average 5.4 ± 1.1 blunts daily) completed 3 experimental sessions (oral THC pretreatment dose; counterbalanced order) using a placebo-controlled within-subject crossover design. During each session, participants completed a baseline evaluation and were first exposed to neutral cues then marijuana cues while physiological measures and subjec

Depressive symptoms in PD correlate with higher 5-HTT binding in raphe and limbic structures.

BACKGROUND: Depression associated with Parkinson disease (PD) has a different symptom profile to endogenous depression. The etiology of depression in PD remains uncertain though abnormal serotonergic neurotransmission could play a role. OBJECTIVE: To assess with PET serotonergic function via in vivo serotonin transporter (5-HTT) availability in antidepressant-naive patients with PD. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with PD and 10 healthy matched control subjects had a clinical battery of tests including the patient-report Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the clinician-report Hamilton Rati

Effect of combination therapy with thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine versus T4 monotherapy in patients with hypothyroidism, a double-blind, randomised cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of hypothyroidism with 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T(3)) is controversial. A recent meta-analysis concludes that no evidence is present in favour of using T(3). However, the analysis included a mixture of different patient groups and dose-regimens. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of combination therapy with thyroxine (T(4)) and T(3) versus T(4) monotherapy in patients with hypothyroidism on stable T(4) substitution. Study design Double-blind, randomised cross-over. Fifty micrograms of the usual T(4) dose was replaced with either 20 microg T(3) or 50 microg T(4) for 12 week

[Investigation of the possible factors related to root resorption during orthodontic treatment in adolescents].

Currently, a very important thread of research on COVID-19 is to determine the dimension of the psychopathological emotional reactions induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. A non-experimental online research project was designed to determine the predictors of the severity of psychopathological symptoms, such as depression and PTSD symptoms, and the nature of the feedback mechanism between them in groups of men, remaining in hospital isolation due to infection and at-home isolation during the COVID-19 epidemic. The presence of symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a sens

Use of a supportive care team for screening and preemptive intervention among multiple myeloma patients receiving stem cell transplantation.

Although peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation (PBSCT) has assumed a growing role in the treatment of multiple myeloma, very few studies have examined the functional and quality-of-life changes experienced by myeloma patients in the transplant setting. Multiple myeloma is characterized by a range of debilitating physical and psychosocial symptoms. However, supportive care needs for patients with this disease are often overlooked or managed only episodically. The current study pilot-tested an interdisciplinary supportive care program designed to provide screening and identify patients at r

Insecure Attachment and Psychological Distress in Early Adolescence: Loneliness as a Mediator.

The existing research on attachment has been predominantly limited to Western adult populations and parental attachment relationships, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of adolescent development. The present study addresses these limitations by investigating how insecure attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers is associated with psychological distress in early adolescence (grades 7-9), with particular attention to the mediating role of loneliness. This developmental period represents a critical window for intervention, as patterns of social-emotional adjustment established during

The Degree Centrality and Functional Connectivity in Patients With Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Presenting as Ictal Panic: A Resting State fMRI Study.

OBJECTIVES: Ictal panic (IP) can be observed occasionally in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Such descriptions can be found in previous studies, but the mechanism is still not clear and often confused with panic attacks in patients with panic disorder (PD). We try to use imaging methods (resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, rs-fMRI) to study the mechanism of this psychiatric comorbidity in patients with TLE. METHODS: Forty right-onset TLE patients were observed, including 28 patients with TLE but without IP and 12 patients with TLEIP along with 30 gender-age matche

Medical cannabis for the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome: a retrospective, open-label case series.

BACKGROUND: The use of cannabis for treating fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) has not been comprehensively investigated. Thus, we have assessed the efficacy and adverse events (AEs) of short- and long-term medical cannabis (MC) treatment for FMS. METHODS: Data were obtained from medical reports archived in the pain clinic of Ponderano (Italy; retrospective study). FMS patients, who were resistant to conventional therapy, received licensed MC with various Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) content, as powdered whole flowers (decoction or vaporization) or oil extracts. Psychological distress among Plains Indian mothers with children referred to screening for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress (PD) includes symptoms of depression and anxiety and is associated with considerable emotional suffering, social dysfunction and, often, with problematic alcohol use. The rate of current PD among American Indian women is approximately 2.5 times higher than that of U.S. women in general. Our study aims to fill the current knowledge gap about the prevalence and characteristics of PD and its association with self-reported current drinking problems among American Indian mothers whose children were referred to screening for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).

A Behavioral Change Smartphone App and Program (ToDo-CR) to Decrease Sedentary Behavior in Cardiac Rehabilitation Participants: Prospective Feasibility Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation participants are encouraged to meet physical activity guidelines to reduce the risk of repeat cardiac events. However, previous studies have found that physical activity levels are low and sedentary behavior is high, both during and after cardiac rehabilitation. There is potential for smartphone apps to be effective in reducing sedentary behavior, although among the few studies that have investigated smartphone apps in cardiac rehabilitation, none targeted sedentary behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a behavioral smartphone a
