[Food allergy: the celery-mugwort-spice syndrome. Association with mango allergy?].

Celery allergies are commonly observed in mugwort pollen-allergic patients. This situation is frequently associated with an allergy to spices of the umbelliferous family. Thus a "celery-mugwort-spice syndrome" has been established. In 31 patients (27 females, 4 males) allergy to celery was diagnosed between 1978 and 1982. They were followed up in 1983 and complementary tests (skin and RAST) with various raw vegetables, spices and mugwort pollen were done. For specific diagnosis of allergy to celery skin testing (scratch or prick) with fresh celery bulb was reliable. In contrast, RAST was not s…

[First case of Candida glabrata endocarditis in Greenland].

Candida glabrata, also known as nakoseomyces glabrata, is a rare cause of endocarditis. This is the first known case of C. glabrata endocarditis in Greenland. In this case, the patient was a 70-year-old woman with a history of mild aortic valve stenosis, in which candidemia was found in blood cultures drawn during a 14-day postoperative ICU stay after small bowel obstruction. Two months later, the patient had persistent candidemia and a 25 mm fungal vegetation on the native aortic valve. The patient died shortly after the diagnosis was made.

Streptococcus agalactiae Endocarditis Involving the Tricuspid Valve and Device Leads in a Patient With an Automated Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (AICD).

Infective endocarditis involving cardiac device leads remains a serious complication in patients with intracardiac hardware, particularly in the setting of bacteremia. We present a case of a 47-year-old female with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and an automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) who developed Group B Streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) bacteremia with evidence of both lead-associated and tricuspid valve vegetations. The case highlights diagnostic challenges in transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), multidisciplinary management, and the rol

A rare morphology of the cardiac fibroma in a child: a case report.

Here we report a rare morphology of a cardiac fibroma in a child. A 2-year and 8-month-old toddler came for "chronic constipation" and was found to have a heart murmur on cardiac auscultation. Further transthoracic echocardiography suggested "a strong echogenic mass in the left ventricular wall, with some part of "a string of beads" in shape extending into left ventricle outflow tract", which was atypical for either a tumor, thrombus or vegetation. The child underwent resection of the mass and mitral valvuloplasty. Pathological examination confirmed the mass as a cardiac fibroma.

Adrenochrome formation during photochemical decomposition of "caged" epinephrine derivatives.

Control of biological activity with light is a fascinating idea. "Caged" compounds, molecules modified with photolabile protecting group, are one of the instruments for this purpose. Adrenergic receptors are essential regulators of neuronal, endocrine, cardiovascular, vegetative, and metabolic functions. These receptors are largely used as pharmacologic targets. Photolabile "caged" analogs of adrenergic receptor agonists has been reported more than 30 years ago. We report that the photolysis of epinephrine analogs, apart from liberation of the epinephrine, is accompanied by a formation of sign

Infective Endocarditis Presenting as Intracranial Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

We describe a 31-year-old woman who presented with acute right-sided weakness and was found to have a subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left Sylvian fissure and an ipsilateral frontal intraparenchymal hemorrhage. CT angiography revealed an occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery's M1 segment and a saccular aneurysm at its bifurcation. A cerebral angiogram confirmed these findings, and the patient subsequently underwent microsurgical aneurysm resection, which revealed a partially thrombosed pseudoaneurysm. Further stroke workup identified mitral valve vegetation, confirming the diagnosis of i

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in a patient with COVID.

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis is mainly associated with malignancies and rheumatological diseases. We report the case of mildly symptomatic COVID-19 infection with non-bacterial aortic valve vegetation complicated by transient ischemic attack (TIA) and pulmonary embolism during his hospitalisation. This case emphasised rare life-threatening complications from a hypercoagulable state related to COVID-19 infection. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third case report of non-bacterial endocarditis in a patient with COVID-19 patients as a potential rare complication of COVID-19.

Multivalvular destruction as the primary presentation of aggressive infective endocarditis with subaortic valve membrane.

Multivalvular destruction may be a clinical manifestation of infective endocarditis (IE), which is a devastating infection of the heart either alone or superimposed with congenital subaortic membrane as in this case report. Here, we report a case of multivavular destruction with severe vegetation presented as a manifestation of infective endocarditis (IE) in a neglected case of 18-year-old male with previous rheumatic heart disease. Transesophageal echocardiography is an important imaging modality for diagnosis of superimposed aortic and heart lesions. Early necessary investigation and correct

Kissing Lesion of Mitral Valve - A Case Report.

Aortic valve endocarditis can lead to secondary involvement of aorto-mitral curtain and the adjacent anterior mitral leaflet (AML). The secondary damage to AML is often caused by the infected jet of aortic regurgitation hitting the ventricular surface of the mitral leaflet, or by the pronounced bacterial vegetation that prolapses from the aortic valve into the left ventricular outflow tract. This is called 'kissing lesion'. We describe a patient with infective endocarditis of the aortic valve causing perforation of both noncoronary cusp of aortic valve and the AML, which is rare.

Multiple intra-cardiac masses: A life-threatening complication of Behçet's disease.

The incidence of multiple intra-cardiac masses is rare, and the differential diagnosis may be challenging sometimes. The most common etiologies of multiple intra-cardiac masses are thrombus, vegetation, and tumors. Intra-cardiac thrombus is more common in patients with central catheters, with a wall-motion abnormality and global hypokinesis. Certain autoimmune disorders may favor the development of intra-cardiac thrombus, and very rarely, multiple thrombi may be seen. Here, a patient with multiple intra-cardiac masses in the right ventricle and diagnosed with Behçet's disease is presented.

Ectopic Liver Tissue Mistakenly Diagnosed as a Right Atrial Myxoma.

Myxomas, metastatic tumors, thrombi, and vegetations top the differential diagnosis list of cardiac masses. We present a case of ectopic liver tissue, a far less common etiology of a right atrial mass, discovered incidentally on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) of a 37-year-old female with multiple comorbidities who was referred to our facility for further management of left popliteal artery occlusion and right lower extremity cellulitis. We discuss further the categories, proposed pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and potential complications of ectopic liver tissue.

Migration route of Fasciola into the liver.

Humans usually acquire Fasciola infection by eating contaminated aquatic vegetation, such as watercress. After ingestion, Fasciola metacercariae excyst in the duodenum. In contrast to other liver flukes (Clonorchis and Opisthorchis) that migrate through the ampulla of Vater and ascend the biliary tree, Fasciola metacercariae penetrate the duodenal wall, migrate through the peritoneal cavity, and enter the liver. After a period of migrating randomly through the liver parenchyma, they eventually reach the larger biliary ducts and mature into adults. We present a case that illustrates this migrat

Abscess of the spleen in a patient with infectious endocarditis.

A patient with infective endocarditis (IE), complicated by the development of the abscess of the spleen, is described. The diagnosis of IE was verified several months after the onset of clinical symptoms (fever, hemorrhagic skin rashes, splenomegaly). The patient suspected hemorrhagic vasculitis and lymphoma of the spleen, which were not confirmed. With transesophageal echocardiography, vegetations on the aortic valve have been identified, and, according to CT, a spleen infarct with suspected abscess. A successful simultaneous operation was performed - aortic valve replacement and splenectomy.

Thermal and asphyxia exposure risk to freshwater fish in feral-pig-damaged tropical wetlands.

Acute thermal and asphyxia exposure risks for freshwater fish occupying three tropical wetland typologies were examined. Field water-quality data revealed that fish in wetlands grazed by pigs had the highest exposure risks, because they are shallow and heavily damaged by pig activities. In contrast, with the exception is dissolved oxygen (which still reached critical conditions because of aquatic vegetation respiration), deeper permanent and pig-managed wetlands provides the best opportunity for the same fish species to survive in a heavily pig-modified tropical landscape.

Efficient Conversion of Renewable Unsaturated Fatty Acid Methyl Esters by Cross-Metathesis with Eugenol.

Cross-metathesis of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (methyl oleate (MO), methyl petroselinate (MP), and methyl erucate (ME), obtained from vegetable oils) with eugenol (obtained from clove oil) proceeded under green, mild conditions (in 2-propanol or ethanol at 50 °C) in the presence of a ruthenium-carbene catalyst (called a second-generation Grubbs catalyst). These metathesis reactions proceeded with both high conversion (>90% of MO, MP) and selectivity (>98%) even with low catalyst loading (0.1 mol % Ru).

Designing for cleanability: The effects of material, surface roughness, and the presence of blood test soil and bacteria on devices.

Cleaning reusable medical devices removes organic and inorganic soil, which allows for effective disinfection and sterilization. However, it is not always clear what variables to consider when validating cleaning. This study compared the ability of 3 different cleaning agents (ie, water, alcohol, and bleach) to remove bacteria (ie, vegetative and spores) and artificial blood test soil from 2 common device materials: polypropylene and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. There was a complex interaction between bacteria, soil, and surface roughness.
