The aim of the present study was to compare changes in the endogenous androgen environment in healthy women while on low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs). BACKGROUND: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is an autosomal recessive disorder associated with inborn errors of steroid metabolism. 21-hydroxylase enzyme deficiency occurs in 90 to 95% of all cases of CAH, with accumulation of 17 hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP). Early diagnosis of CAH based on newborn screening is possible before the development of symptoms and allows proper treatment, correct sex assignment, and reduced mortality rates. This study describes the results obtained in the first year of a public CAH screening program in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Effects of a new synthetic progesterone derivative 17a-acetoxy-3b-butanoyloxy-6-methyl-pregna-4,6-dien-20-one (ABMP) and the reference gestagen preparations on the rat thymus were evaluated by the degree of variation of the intracellular levels of calcium and cAMP, 3H-uridine inclusion into RNA, thymocyte viability, and thymus mass. It is shown that gestagens can produce antiglucocorticoid action on thymocytes, this activity being most pronounced in the case of ABMP.
