Telbivudine-Induced Myopathy Incidentally Detected by FDG PET/CT Imaging in a Patient With History of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Myopathy is an adverse effect of telbivudine. We describe a case of telbivudine-induced myopathy visualized on FDG PET/CT in a 75-year-old man with history of chronic HBV infection and hepatocellular carcinoma. FDG PET/CT images demonstrate no abnormal uptake characteristic of hypermetabolic malignancy. However, intense hypermetabolic activity in muscles of the abdominal wall was noted. Three months after telbivudine withdrawal, a second FDG PET/CT showed normal muscle activity in the abdominal wall.

Inguinal canal development: the muscular wall and the role of the gubernaculum.

The inguinal canal is an anatomically complex region. Although much has been written about the gubernaculum and the descent of the testis, little is known about the development of the abdominal wall itself. We dissected this inguinal canal in 75 fetuses between 10 and 25 weeks of gestation, 42 males and 33 females. We identified the anterior body-wall muscular layers, located the gonads and uterus, and observed the formation of the scrotum. The gubernaculum was dissected, from the deep to the superficial ends and its distal attachments were determined. We proved that the muscular-fibrous layer

Methods to normalize surface electromyography in respiratory muscles: Is it similar between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and healthy people?

The normalization process is important to determine the best approach for normalizing electromyographic signals from respiratory muscles in healthy subjects and those with ALS. The aim of this study is to compare different methods of normalizing the sEMG signal of respiratory muscles in both healthy subjects and those with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This cross-sectional study was conducted in 67 subjects (50 healthy and 17 with ALS). The electrical activity of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), scalene (ESC), diaphragm (DIA), parasternal (PS), external intercostal (EI), external oblique

Association of low back pain with muscle weakness, decreased mobility function, and malnutrition in older women: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) and decreased mobility function are common problem among older people. Muscle weakness has been reported as a risk factor for these conditions, and exercise therapy can improve them. We created a novel exercise device that also measures abdominal trunk muscle strength. Malnutrition has also emerged as a major problem among older people. Muscle is a direct key linking decreased mobility function and malnutrition. This study aimed to examine the associations of LBP with not only decreased physical function and muscle weakness but also nutritional status of older p

The relation between the transversus abdominis muscles, sacroiliac joint mechanics, and low back pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Two abdominal muscle patterns were tested in the same group of individuals, and their effects were compared in relation to sacroiliac joint laxity. One pattern was contraction of the transversus abdominis, independently of the other abdominals; the other was a bracing action that used all the lateral abdominal muscles. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the biomechanical effect of the exercise for the transversus abdominis known to be effective in low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Drawing in the abdominal wall is a specific exercise for the transversus abdominis muscle (in coc…

Are clinically recommended pelvic floor muscle relaxation positions really efficient for muscle relaxation?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Various positions for pelvic floor muscle (PFM) relaxation are recommended during PFM training in physiotherapy … for PFM relaxation was P1 and followed by P3 and P2, respectively. The order was also the same for abdominal muscles (p < 0.001), P1 > P3 > P2. The rectus abdominis (RA) was the most affected muscle during PFM relaxation. The extent of relaxation of RA muscle increased as the extent of PFM relaxation increased (r = 0.298, p = 0.016). No difference was found betwee …

Case Report: Atypical Focal Axial Presentation of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy Type 1.

Although facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is known and functionally named for the typical findings of progressive weakness of the facial, scapular, and upper arm muscles, there is a growing body of evidence describing atypical presentations, particularly involving the midline musculature. We report 2 notable such cases of atypical FSHD presentation: (1) a 36-year-old postpartum woman with sparing of the usually involved muscles, but who was found to have significant atrophy of the lower abdominal muscles, pectus excavatum, and a positive Beevor sign and (2) a 65-year-old man with …

[Respiratory arrest during sleep. Facts and hypothyses].

The writers analyze 29 nyctohemeral recordings in 20 patients with sleep apneas. In addition to the standard polygraphy, use is made of pneumotachography and capnography. The results (central apnea with open or secondarily closed glottis; obstructive apnea with closed glottis or with expiratory valve phenomenon) raise the hypothesis of a central physiopathological mechanism common to the various types of apneas through a more or less dissociated inhibition of the activity of the respiratory, laryngeal, intercostal, and diaphragmatic muscles:--in central apnea: inhibition of the thoracoabdomina

Effects of Electrical Muscle Stimulation on Waist Circumstance in Adults with Adbominal Obesity: A Randomized, Double-blind, Sham-Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the effects of electrical muscle stimulationon waist circumference as compared with an identical device providing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation as control in adults with abdominal obesity. METHODS: This was a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial. Sixty patients with abdominal obesity received electrical muscle stimulation or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation randomly five times a week for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The electrical muscle stimulationgroup achieved a mean 5.2±2.8 cm decrease in waist circumference while the transcutaneous

Skeletal muscle metastases: primary tumours, prevalence, and radiological features.

BACKGROUND: Although skeletal muscles comprise nearly 50% of the total human body mass and are well vascularised, metastases in the musculature are rare. The reported prevalence of skeletal muscle metastases from post-mortem studies of patients with cancer is inconstant and ranges from 0.03 to 17.5%. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 5,170 patients with metastasised cancer examined and treated at our institution during the period from January 2000 to December 2007, 61 patients with muscle metastases (80 lesions) were identified on computed tomography (CT). Genital tumours (24.6%) were the most freque

Mini-invasive surgery for diastasis recti: an overview on different approaches.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an acquired condition defined by a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm and the subsequent separation between the two medial margins of the rectus muscles, accompanied by a laxity of the ventral abdominal muscles, and often by ventral midline hernias. It is a quite common problem in women after pregnancy. In addition to the aesthetic implications resulting from the swelling of the anterior abdominal wall in the case of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity, DRA leads to several physical functional disorders, including muscle weakness, prolapses …

Neuromuscular Anatomy and Motor Patterns at the Base of Calling Behaviour in the Female Spongy Moth Lymantria dispar.

"Calling behaviour" is a stereotyped rhythmic motor pattern displayed by female moths, by which they emit the sex pheromone to attract of conspecific males. Calling occurs through a squeezing mechanism based on the turtleneck-like folding and unfolding of the ovipositor cuticle during its telescopic extensions and retractions. This mechanism is under the control of the terminal abdominal ganglion (TAG). By combining anatomical and electrophysiological approaches, here we studied the morpho-functional organisation of the abdominal muscles and the activity of motoneurons from TAG nerve N4-N6 as …
