Contralateral and ipsilateral 'suppression' of evoked otoacoustic emissions at high stimulation rates.

A previous study has shown that the amplitude of otoacoustic emissions decreases with increase in stimulus rate. Furthermore, these changes are similar to the changes initiated by contralateral suppression of the click-evoked otoacoustic emission. Further studies have been carried out which showed that contralateral suppression, due to a 60 dB SL white-noise suppressor, has a magnitude of about 2.7 dB for the normal subjects used in this study. The equivalent ipsilateral 'suppression' is approximately 8 dB at a stimulus rate of 2000 clicks/s. The two effects have an equivalent magnitude at a s

The acoustic reflex threshold in aging ears.

This study investigates the controversy regarding the influence of age on the acoustic reflex threshold for broadband noise, 500-, 1000-, 2000-, and 4000-Hz activators between Jerger et al. [Mono. Contemp. Audiol. 1 (1978)] and Jerger [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 66 (1979)] on the one hand and Silman [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 66 (1979)] and others on the other. The acoustic reflex thresholds for broadband noise, 500-, 1000-, 2000-, and 4000-Hz activators were evaluated under two measurement conditions. Seventy-two normal-hearing ears were drawn from 72 subjects ranging in age from 20-69 years. The results

A search for the most suitable imminent components and probe tone frequency in tympanometry.

The relative occurrence of bell-shaped and various types of W-shaped susceptance-conductance and admittance-phase tympanograms at a probe-tone frequency of 660 Hz was determined from registrations on normal ears. The diagnostic value of the susceptance-conductance versus the admittance-phase representation of tympanograms was studied on pathological middle-ear systems. Using probe-tone frequencies from 510 Hz up to 910 Hz, tympanograms for all four imminent components were recorded on 10 pathological ears and the diagnostic value compared. From the combination of these studies we conclude that

Effect of sensorineural hearing loss on the stapedius reflex growth function in the elderly.

The effect of sensorineural hearing loss upon stapedius reflex growth functions was studied in the elderly. The reflex activators were pure tones (500, 1000, and 2000 Hz) and broadband noise; reflex magnitude was expressed in decibels relative to static acoustic impedance. When expressed in decibels relative to reflex threshold, the mean growth functions of the elderly were reduced compared to previous data for young subjects [Silman, Popelka, and Gelfand, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 64, 1406--1411 (1978)] and the noise functions differed in terms of both shape and magnitude. When expressed in SPL, th

Reflex modulation and loudness recruitment.

Eyeblink reflexes to airpuffs to the orbit are inhibited by preliminary tones even of low intensity, and the amount of inhibition or "reflex modulation" (RM) is correlated with tone loudness. Brief pure tones were presented 100 msec prior to an airpuff to the eye and eyeblink amplitude was recorded in 7 normal-hearing adults. Tones of several levels were either in quiet or in a white noise of 73.5 dbC. As tones increased in intensity, RM increased faster to stimulation in the masked than in the unmasked ear, simulating the classical "pseudo-recruitment" in the noise-masked ear. In addition, ve

Evaluation of a stable non-aqueous coupling medium for transcranial ultrasonic stimulation and sonogenetics.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) and sonogenetics enable non-invasive neuromodulation with high spatial precision. Their efficacy depends critically on the stability and acoustic performance of the coupling medium placed between the ultrasound transducer and the skull. Degassed water, although acoustically ideal, requires labor-intensive preparation and lacks long-term stability, limiting its practicality for routine use. NEW METHOD: We developed a stable non-aqueous coupling medium consisting of 45% polyurethane (PU) and 55% tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME).

Growth factor interactions in cultures of dissociated adult acoustic ganglia: neuronotrophic effects.

Auditory neurons cultured from adult rat acoustic ganglia require for survival either a substrate bound factor(s) present in astrocyte conditioned medium or substrate bound basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Nerve growth factor (NGF) is not a survival factor for these neurons in vitro, but when used in combination with substrate bound bFGF, NGF does vigorously stimulate a neuritogenesis response by these neurons. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta 1) enhances the survival effect that bFGF has on these adult auditory neurons but does not by itself promote their survival in dissociate

Neural response properties predict perceived contents and locations elicited by intracranial electrical stimulation of human auditory cortex.

Intracranial electrical stimulation (iES) of auditory cortex can elicit sound experiences with a variety of perceived contents (hallucination or illusion) and locations (contralateral or bilateral side), independent of actual acoustic inputs. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this elicitation heterogeneity remain undiscovered. Here, we collected subjective reports following iES at 3062 intracranial sites in 28 patients (both sexes) and identified 113 auditory cortical sites with iES-elicited sound experiences. We then decomposed the sound-induced intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG

On the Effect of High Stimulation Rates on Temporal Loudness Integration in Cochlear Implant Users.

Long stimuli have lower detection thresholds or are perceived louder than short stimuli with the same intensity, an effect known as temporal loudness integration (TLI). In electric hearing, TLI for pulse trains with a fixed rate but varying number of pulses, i.e. stimulus duration, has mainly been investigated at clinically used stimulation rates. To study the effect of an overall effective stimulation rate at 100% channel crosstalk, we investigated TLI with (a) a clinically used single-channel stimulation rate of 1,500 pps and (b) a high stimulation rate of 18,000 pps, both for an apical and

Multisensory correlation computations in the human brain identified by a time-resolved encoding model.

Neural mechanisms that arbitrate between integrating and segregating multisensory information are essential for complex scene analysis and for the resolution of the multisensory correspondence problem. However, these mechanisms and their dynamics remain largely unknown, partly because classical models of multisensory integration are static. Here, we used the Multisensory Correlation Detector, a model that provides a good explanatory power for human behavior while incorporating dynamic computations. Participants judged whether sequences of auditory and visual signals originated from the same so

tDCS modulates speech perception and production in second language learners.

Accurate identification and pronunciation of nonnative speech sounds can be particularly challenging for adult language learners. The current study tested the effects of a brief musical training combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on speech perception and production in a second language (L2). The sample comprised 36 native Hebrew speakers, aged 18-38, who studied English as L2 in a formal setting and had little musical training. Training encompassed musical perception tasks with feedback (i.e., timbre, duration, and tonal memory) and concurrent tDCS applied over the le

Differential visual and auditory effects in a crossmodal induced Roelofs illusion.

For vision and audition to accurately inform judgments about an object's location, the brain must reconcile the variable anatomical correspondence of the eyes and ears, and the different frames of reference in which stimuli are initially encoded. To do so, it has been suggested that multisensory cues are eventually represented within a common frame of reference. If this is the case, then they should be similarly susceptible to distortion of this reference frame. Following this reasoning, we asked participants to locate visual and auditory probes in a crossmodal variant of the induced Roelofs e

Induction of specific brain oscillations may restore neural circuits and be used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Brain oscillations underlie the function of our brains, dictating how we both think and react to the world around us. The synchronous activity of neurons generates these rhythms, which allow different parts of the brain to communicate and orchestrate responses to internal and external stimuli. Perturbations of cognitive rhythms and the underlying oscillator neurons that synchronize different parts of the brain contribute to the pathophysiology of diseases including Alzheimer's disease, (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), epilepsy and other diseases of rhythm that have been studied extensively by G

The critical role of the inferior frontal cortex in establishing a prediction model for generating subsequent mismatch negativity (MMN): A TMS-EEG study.

BACKGROUND: The prediction violation account of automatic or pre-attentive change detection assumed that the inferior frontal cortex (IFC) is involved in establishing a prediction model for detecting unexpected changes. Evidence supporting the IFC's contribution to prediction model is mainly based on the Mismatch Negativity (MMN) to deviants violating predictions that are established based on the frequently presented standard events. However, deviant detection involves processes, such as events comparison, other than prediction model establishment. OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated th

Hybrid optogenetic and electrical stimulation for greater spatial resolution and temporal fidelity of cochlear activation.

OBJECTIVE: Compared to electrical stimulation, optogenetic stimulation has the potential to improve the spatial precision of neural activation in neuroprostheses, but it requires intense light and has relatively poor temporal kinetics. We tested the effect of hybrid stimulation, which is the combination of subthreshold optical and electrical stimuli, on spectral and temporal fidelity in the cochlea by recording multiunit activity in the inferior colliculus of channelrhodopsin (H134R variant) transgenic mice. APPROACH: Pulsed light or biphasic electrical pulses were delivered to cochlear spira

"Safe" hyperbilirubinemia is associated with altered neonatal behavior.

Treatment of neonatal jaundice is currently recommended for higher bilirubinemia levels than before. Using the Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale, we found that a series of 28 healthy, untreated, term neonates with moderate bilirubinemia scored significantly less than an equal number of appropriately matched controls with low bilirubinemia for visual and auditory items, both inanimate and animate. Also, a greater lability of state, a lower self-quieting ability and more frequent tremors were found in the jaundiced group. We conclude that hyperbilirubinemia per se, even in the concent

Self-induced vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most commonly recognized form of self-induced vertigo. This paper describes other means by which patients have been able to induce vertigo to the extent that at times it has been incapacitating. Hypotheses for the production of these phenomena are suggested in a number of the cases. Some of the features cannot be explained on the basis of our present knowledge of the vestibular system.
