Training-induced plasticity of auditory localization in adult mammals.

Accurate auditory localization relies on neural computations based on spatial cues present in the sound waves at each ear. The values of these cues depend on the size, shape, and separation of the two ears and can therefore vary from one individual to another. As with other perceptual skills, the neural circuits involved in spatial hearing are shaped by experience during development and retain some capacity for plasticity in later life. However, the factors that enable and promote plasticity of auditory localization in the adult brain are unknown. Here we show that mature ferrets can rapidly r

Cerebellar lesions and prism adaptation in macaque monkeys.

If a laterally displacing prism is placed in front of one eye of a person or monkey with the other eye occluded, they initially will point to one side of a target that is located directly in front of them. Normally, people and monkeys adapt easily to the displaced vision and correct their aim after a few trials. If the prism then is removed, there is a postadaptation shift in which the subject misses the target and points in the opposite direction for a few trials. We tested five Macaque monkeys for their ability to adapt to a laterally displacing prism and to show the expected postadaptation

Ultraviolet sensitivity of three cone types in the aphakic observer determined by chromatic adaptation.

Sensitivities at 5.5 deg off-fovea from the aphakic observer superimposed on orange, purple and blue fields were obtained to estimate short-, middle- and long-wavelength cone spectra respectively. The middle-wavelength mechanism had a visible wavelength maximum resembling a nomogram plus an UV sensitivity fitting a cis-peak. The short (and, to a lesser extent, the long) wavelength cone sensitivities are higher in the UV than expected.

[Visual acuity at twilight and contrast vision in patients with bifocal IOL].

After cataract extraction by phacoemulsification, the True Vista bifocal lens (group I; Storz Ophthalmics, St. Louis, Missouri, USA) was implanted in 20 eyes, and the Accurasee bifocal lens (group II; Alcon, Forth Worth, Texas, USA) was implanted in 14 eyes. Following a 4-6 month postoperative period, both groups were checked with respect to visual acuity, mesopic acuity, and thresholds of contrast under mesopic light conditions. As mean values, group I demonstrated a distance acuity without correction of 0.77 (+/- 0.17), group II of 0.73 (+/- 0.14); the average near acuity without correction

Psychophysiological aspects of increasing resistance to space motion sickness.

One of the actual and difficulty solved problems of the adaptation period to microgravitation is space motion sickness (MS) that has the negative influence on well-being and performance of crewmembers in the initial and highly crucial phase of the orbital flight. Among the prophylactic measures for decrease of the unfavourable influence of space MS the preflight training is of great importance, and its role in perspective undoubtedly will grow in connection with increase of the number of crewmembers. During the last years several authors received experimental materials evidenced that as a base

Enduring dysmetria and impaired gain adaptivity of saccadic eye movements in Wallenberg's lateral medullary syndrome.

Saccadic eye movements and the adaptive control of their amplitudes were examined in patients with Wallenberg's lateral medullary syndrome. Half of the patients had permanent saccadic dysmetria. Their primary saccades had asymmetric amplitudes: those made in response to an ipsilateral target step (i.e. to the lesion side) tended to be hypermetric and saccades made in response to a contralateral target step were strongly hypometric. Multiple correction saccades were needed for target fixation. The adjustment of the amplitude of artificially induced hypermetric saccades, called gain adaptivity,

Differences in optokinetic and vestibular ocular reflex performance in teleosts and their relationship to different life styles.

Horizontal eye movements in response to vestibular and optokinetic stimulation were investigated in 20 species of marine and fresh water teleosts. Most species performed spontaneous saccadic eye movements in light and in darkness. Successive saccades occurred either at irregular intervals and in different directions (few species), or in bursts of smaller saccades in one direction followed by saccades in the opposite direction (majority of species). Thus, in the latter group the lines of sight shifted cyclically from one side to the other about every 10-15 s. Eye movement responses in goldfish

11-cis retinal restores visual function in vitamin A-deficient Manduca.

Larvae of the tobacco hornworm moth Manduca sexta were reared on either a carotenoid-supplemented or a carotenoid-deficient diet. The former yields fortified adults with normal visual function, whereas visual sensitivity and rhodopsin content are reduced by 2-4 log units in the compound eyes of the deprived moths reared on the latter. We characterized the retinoids of fortified retinas and investigated the recovery of visual function in deprived moths that were provided with retinaldehyde as a source of photopigment chromophore. Retinoids were identified and measured by high-performance liquid

Ocular manifestations and complications of acute methyl alcohol intoxication.

The ocular manifestations of acute methyl alcohol intoxication were studied in 24 men during an outbreak in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The visual acuity, pupillary reactions to light, fundal appearances and visual fields were recorded in all patients within 72 hours of ingestion of methanol and again three months later. Three groups were identified. Nine patients had no ocular abnormality (Group 1). Seven patients had only transient ocular abnormalities (Group 2). Eight patients had permanent ocular abnormalities (Group 3). Transient abnormalities included peripapillary oedema, optic disc

Long-term effect of phototherapy on visual function.

Computer-averaged electroretinogram records were used to examine scotopic retinal functioning of a group of 4-year-old children who were treated for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia by exposure to at least 42 consecutive hours of continuous phototherapy. Dark adaptation functions of the children were similar to those previously found for control subjects, suggesting that no permanent damage to rod function had been incurred during exposure. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in the final electroretinographic amplitudes of light-treated and control subjects. Ophthalmologic and ne

Impact of flight and equivalent short-term high-altitude exposure on ocular structures and function.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high-altitude conditions during flight or similar activities affects many aspects of visual function, which is critical not only for flight safety but for any altitude-related activity. We aimed to summarize the available literature pertaining to ocular changes during flight or equivalent short-term high-altitude exposure (e.g., hypobaric chamber, effortless ascent lasting ≤ 24 h) and to highlight future research priorities. METHODS: Using the PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science/ISI Web of Knowledge databases with structured search syntax, we conducted a systematic revie

Anterior Segment Imaging Devices in Ophthalmic Telemedicine.

Obtaining a clear assessment of the anterior segment is critical for disease diagnosis and management in ophthalmic telemedicine. The anterior segment can be imaged with slit lamp cameras, robotic remote controlled slit lamps, cell phones, cell phone adapters, digital cameras, and webcams, all of which can enable remote care. The ability of these devices to identify various ophthalmic diseases has been studied, including cataracts, as well as abnormalities of the ocular adnexa, cornea, and anterior chamber. This article reviews the current state of anterior segment imaging for the purpose of o

Ocular Surface Diseases in Marine Mammals.

Marine mammal eyes are adapted for underwater and air environments by increasing the mucins in tear film and having flatter corneas and round crystalline lenses. The cornea and lens are most commonly affected by environmental imbalances. Lack of shade and excessive exposure to sunlight are significant risk factors for keratopathy in pinnipeds, and likely true in cetaceans. Natural aging is also important, as sun damage and exposure to other oxidative stressors can cause cumulative damage to the cornea over time. By diminishing UV exposure and optimizing environmental factors, surface ocular di

A Controlled Impact of Optic Nerve as a New Model of Traumatic Optic Neuropathy in Mouse.

PURPOSE: Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is the most feared visual consequence of head and ocular trauma in both military and civilian communities, for which standard treatment does not exist. Animal models are critical for the development of novel TON therapies as well as the understanding of TON pathophysiology. However, the models currently used for TON have some limitations regarding consistency and mirroring the exact pathological progression of TON in closed ocular trauma. In this study, we modified the model of controlled cortical impact and adapted it for studying TON. METHODS: We de

Long-Term Clinical Outcomes in Treatment-Naïve Patients With Orbital Adnexal Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma: A Single-Center Study.

Ocular adnexal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma (OAML) is the most common type of ocular lymphoma with a higher prevalence in Asia than in Western countries. OAML represents 1%-2% of all non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, 5%-15% of extranodal lymphomas, and approximately 55% of orbital malignancies. "Watch and wait" after biopsy or surgical resection, radiation therapy, and systemic treatment, including antibiotics administration and chemotherapy with various combinations of regimens can be considered for OAML treatment. Radiotherapy is adapted for limited-stage disease with excellent cl

Recombination in the genome of Chlamydia trachomatis involving the polymorphic membrane protein C gene relative to ompA and evidence for horizontal gene transfer.

Genome sequencing of Chlamydia trachomatis serovar D has identified polymorphic membrane proteins (Pmp) that are a newly recognized protein family unique to the Chlamydiaceae family. Cumulative data suggest that these diverse proteins are expressed on the cell surface and might be immunologically important. We performed phylogenetic analyses and statistical modeling with 18 reference serovars and 1 genovariant of C. trachomatis to examine the evolutionary characteristics and comparative genetics of PmpC and pmpC, the gene that encodes this protein. We also examined 12 recently isolated ocular
