Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumour of the major salivary glands. It accounts for 10-15% of all salivary gland tumours and 1% of all head and neck tumours. Surgical resection followed by radiation is the choice of treatment for ACC. However, late loco-regional recurrence and metastasis is often seen emphasizing the importance of long-term follow-up. We report an unusual case of extradural metastasis of ACC in the dorsal spine. The primary submandibular gland tumour was resected 11 y back. A recurrence had been detected two years prior to the occurrence of spinal metastasi

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cervix is a rare and aggressive tumor with fatal outcome. In this paper we report two cases of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma and a review of literature. A 80 years old woman, admitted to our hospital with postmenopausal bleeding and hydrorrhea. Gynealogical examination showed a cervical stenotic with the presence of a tumor processus. Biopsy of cervical growth was done. 80-year-old woman presented with vaginal bleeding with pelvic pain. Physical examination revealed a friable mass in the cervix. Incisional biopsy was performed. In the both cases the diagnosis

AIM: To evaluate the effects of topical azelastine treatment on symptoms related to adenoid hypertrophy and the size of adenoid tissue in children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, 60 children who were found to have adenoid hypertrophy were included. A questionnaire on nasal symptoms, nasal endoscopy and skin prick tests was administered to all patients. All patients had complaints of chronic nasal obstruction symptoms and nasal endoscopy showed > 75% choanal obstruction, attributable to adenoid pads. The adenoid/nasopharyngeal areas were calculated. All of the patients underwent azelastine na

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) of the maxillary sinus have features on CT and MR imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients with histopathologically proved maxillary sinus ACCs were included. The growth pattern was classified as expansile or destructive types on the basis of CT images. CT images were also reviewed for adjacent bony defects and MR images were reviewed for tumor extension. Fluid accumulation in the ipsilateral maxillary sinus was also assessed.
RESULTS: The tumors had caused adjacent bony expansion with minimal

In this study, real-time PCR was used to quantify adenovirus DNA in cell suspensions prepared from 106 right and left tonsils and 10 adenoids obtained from 57 patients who underwent routine tonsillectomies and/or adenoidectomies. Eighty-four (72.4%) tonsils and adenoids samples were positive for HAdV by real-time PCR. The viral load ranged from 2.8 × 10(2) to 2.6 × 10(6) copies/10(7) cells and varied up to sixfold between the right and left tonsils. In some cases, only one tonsil was positive and the viral load was lower in older children. Seventy-eight of 84 positive samples could be typed by…

Pseudovascular adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (PASCC) is an uncommon histological variant of squamous cell carcinoma that can mimic vascular neoplasms, particularly angiosarcoma, in its morphologic characteristics. PASCC has been reported in the head and neck, as well as in the other organs such as the breast, lungs, urinary bladder, vulva, and uterine cervix. Only two cases of PASCC arising from the upper aerodigestive tract have been reported so far. We report a case of PASCC of oral cavity in a 40-year-old man, which mimicked an angiosarcoma initially. Immunohistochemical analysis led to a

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma represents 1% of head and neck cancers. Adenoid cystic carcinomas are slow growing tumours with high potential for local recurrence. Treatment usually associates radiotherapy and surgery, but the role of radiotherapy remains unclear. We report a retrospective multicentric study of the management and prognostic factors of 169 adenoid cystic carcinomas of head and neck.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1982 and 2010, 169 patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck were referred to the Cercle des oncologues radiothérapeutes du Sud departments of rad

First bite syndrome is a well-described sequelae of parapharyngeal space surgery, thought to result from sympathetic denervation of the parotid gland. We describe a case of first bite syndrome caused by an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland. The tumor was not clinically or radiographically apparent until 18 months after initial presentation despite repeated imaging. In patients with first bite syndrome and no surgical history, there must be high suspicion for a malignancy, which may be occult on presentation. The submandibular gland should be considered as a possible site of a

Mucous retention cysts of the parotid gland are rare, and a coexistent adenoid cystic carcinoma is even an unusual occurrence. Such coexistent adenoid cystic carcinomas with mucous retention cyst of the parotid gland are difficult to diagnose clinically and, at times, stage difficulty in their management. We report a rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with mucous retention cyst of the parotid gland with its diagnostic and management dilemma in a 14-year-old adolescent girl.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland preferentially metastasizes to distant organs. It rarely metastasizes to lymph nodes. Recently, lymphangiogenesis has been associated with lymph node metastasis. Therefore, lymphangiogenesis in adenoid cystic carcinoma was evaluated from the number of lymphatic vessels and the expression of lymphangiogenic factors. Immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis were performed on clinical materials (29 cases for immunohistochemistry and 9 cases for molecular analysis). Normal submandibular gland was used as a negative control of lymphangiogenesis (10

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome refers to the development of pain in the parotid region after the first bite of each meal.
CASE REPORT: A man was referred to our institution with first bite syndrome as his only symptom. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head and neck revealed a deep lobe parotid mass in close contact with the external carotid artery. Computed tomography guided fine needle biopsy indicated adenoid cystic carcinoma. Total parotidectomy was performed, with en bloc resection of the infiltrated external carotid artery and a selective neck dissection of levels Ib to III. High-wei
