OBJECTIVE: The emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to numerous changes worldwide. Due to restrictive measures, hospital admission patterns changed in child and adolescent psychiatry, as in all other medical specialties. Although there are studies investigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, research examining the reasons for hospital admissions and changing trends among children and adolescents remains limited.
METHODS: This study used data from the hospital information system of a university hospital and included patients aged 0-18 years.

Social support for individuals with psychosis is associated with decreased symptom severity, improved outcomes, and recovery. In adolescents, declining social support prior to the first hospitalization has been shown to predict time to relapse, which may have implications for early intervention. Data were collected on adolescents (n=84) following a first hospitalization for a psychotic episode in order to examine how change in social support relates to the duration and type of untreated symptoms. Most adolescents experienced a decline in social support (n=46) prior to index hospitalization. Ch

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is increasing among adolescents, and because of changing behaviours, current data are needed on the consequences of self-harm. We sought to investigate the trends related to hospital presentation, readmission, patient outcome and medical costs in adolescents who presented with self-harm to the emergency department.
METHODS: We used administrative data on 403 805 adolescents aged 13-17 years presenting to Ontario emergency departments in 2011-2013. Adolescents with self-harm visits were 1:2 propensity matched to controls with visits without self-harm, using demographic, m

BACKGROUND: Stress factors associated with migration may expose minor immigrants to mental health problems. The aim of the study was to describe acute psychiatric problems, in terms of reasons for hospitalization and diagnosis at discharge, in a sample of Italian and Migrant adolescents (both first and second generation).
METHODS: We collected data on socio-demographic and clinical-diagnostic characteristics of 423 Italian and Migrant adolescents (mean age: 15 years ± 1.44; range 12-17.91), hospitalized at the Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Unit of the Spedali Civili of Brescia between

OBJECTIVES: There is an increasing awareness of the importance of patients' subjective evaluations of therapy. Regarding electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), the results are conflicting. We hypothesized that making a comparison between patients' satisfaction with ECT and other forms of psychiatric therapies would capture personal experience as opposed to opinion about the treatment modalities. We compared adult responses to adolescent responses.
METHODS: Four unmatched patient groups were recruited (N = 98) and were divided as follows: (a) patients treated with ECT as adolescents (n = 13), (b) pa

OBJECTIVE: despite endometriosis being a common disease, where early detection is key to preventing its progression, it is a condition often overlooked in adolescents. The aim of this study was to report the clinical characteristics of adolescent patients with endometriosis monitored in a tertiary hospital.

COVID-19 and Psychiatric Disorders in Minors: Changes in Inpatient Treatment According to Hospital Statistics Abstract: Increased rates of psychiatric disorders and psychiatric emergencies in children and adolescents stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported, with more children and adolescents suffering from internalizing disorders. This study analyzes whether the increased rates led to increased rates of inpatient treatment in child and adolescent psychiatric and pediatric hospitals in Germany as well as a change in diagnoses of the treated patients. We analyzed routine hospital

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Adolescent pregnancy is an important public health problem worldwide. It is associated with increased risk of maternal and fetal complications. We aimed to investigate whether adolescent pregnancies have an increased risk for perinatal complications. We focused primarily on the relationship between adolescent pregnancy and preterm delivery. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, INTERVENTIONS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used records of 38,646 women who gave birth at our hospital, between January 2008 and December 2009. Five hundred eighty-two randomly selected pregnant adolescents

AIM: We seek to elucidate the prevalence, types of respiratory symptoms experienced, and potential early-life risk factors of asthma in adolescence.
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study including 294 adolescents [130 moderately-late preterm (MLP), 81 early preterm (EP), and 83 full-term (FT)]. Asthma, asthma-like symptoms, and smoking in early childhood and adolescence were self-reported. We collected prenatal and postnatal characteristics, including maternal smoking, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections.
RESULTS: In 11% of EP, 4% of MLP, a

AIM: Although the effect of adolescent pregnancy on perinatal mortality and morbidity is known, data on the neonatal hospitalization rate in these deliveries have not been reported. We aimed to assess the possible effects of adolescent pregnancies on the hospital outcomes of the newborns.
METHODS: Three hundred adolescent mothers under 17 years of age and their singleton newborns were enrolled in this retrospective study. The major outcomes of the study were the rates of prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation, and the admission rate of newborns to the neonatal intensive care unit.

UNLABELLED: Epidemiological data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) in children and adolescents is sparse and available primarily for the USA. In Europe, the burden and management of VTE have rarely been subjects of nationwide analyses. We conducted a nationwide, retrospective, patient-level analysis of the Swiss medical statistics an administrative data collection including 1961 hospitalizations (1653 incident events) with VTE aged 19 or younger between 2004 and 2023. We estimated the disease-specific incidence rate, in-hospital case fatality rates, length of stay (LOS), and related admission to

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are common in adolescents, yet most do not receive appropriate treatment. Some at-risk adolescents need more than traditional outpatient mental health services for stabilization and prevention of inpatient hospitalization. These adolescents may benefit from day treatment programs, which include intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP).
OBJECTIVE: There are few transdiagnostic day treatment programs for adolescents that span across both IOP and PHP levels of care. Therefore, lessons learned from the implementation of a novel tran

A retrospective review of adolescent deliveries (maternal age range: 12-19 years) at the maternity unit of the main General Hospital, Grenada, was undertaken for the years 1987 and 1988 using the delivery room register and hospital medical records. These mothers were compared with women who delivered during the same period but were aged between 20 and 30 years. Of the 3203 deliveries which occurred during the study period, 613 (20%) involved adolescents, giving a prevalence rate of one in five pregnancies. chi 2 and Fisher's exact test analyses revealed that pregnancies occurring in younger ad

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate longitudinal care needs and health service access among mother-infant pairs after adolescent pregnancy.
METHODS: In a case-control study, data were analyzed from primiparous adolescent and adult mother-infant pairs who delivered at Reunion Island University Hospital, France, between January 2004 and December 2006, and were followed-up from maternity discharge until December 2011. Infant outcomes were hospitalization during the first 2 years of life, hospital access for "non-medical" reasons, and neuropsychiatric care. Maternal outcomes were number of pregnancies and chi

Our study examined characteristics of adolescent and young adult study participants using gabapentinoids (gabapentin, pregabalin), with previous history of adolescent psychiatric inpatient hospitalization. Particular focus was on temporal association of age, at first prescription for gabapentinoids, to age at tobacco smoking initiation, regular alcohol use, diagnosis of substance dependence and prescriptions for benzodiazepines and opioids. Methods: The initial study population contained 508 adolescents (300 females, 208 males) admitted to psychiatric inpatient care in Oulu University hospital
