Maternal Variables as Determinant of Fetal Growth: Study Protocol on Customized Fetal Growth Charts in Malaysia (GROW-My).

Adverse perinatal outcomes such as stillbirth, low birth weight and small for gestational age are still reported to be of high prevalence despite advanced healthcare technology and good quality hospital services in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to create a model to evaluate individualized birth weight customized for maternal characteristics in a Malaysian population. Three phases are involved in designing the customized fetal growth chart (GROW-My). Baseline data is collected from previous pregnancies in the UKM Medical Centre from year 2010 to 2017. Specific maternal attributes were

Declining maternal mortality in the face of persistently high HIV prevalence in a middle-income country.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and determine maternal death causes and trends in Greater Soweto, Johannesburg, South … e in MMR since HIV treatment for pregnant women was introduced in 2004. Previous caesarean section, advanced maternal age, and anaemia were associated with death from obstetric haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and nonpregnancy-related infections, respectively. MMR may be further reduced with accelerated initiation of HIV treatment during pregnancy.

Maternal Health, Pregnancy and Offspring Factors, and Maternal Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Nordic Population-Based Registry Study.

Thyroid cancer incidence is higher in women than men, especially during the reproductive years, for reasons that remain poorly understood. Using population-based registry data from 4 Nordic countries through 2015, we examined associations of perinatal characteristics with risk of maternal thyroid cancer. Cases were women diagnosed with thyroid cancer ≥2 years after last birth (n = 7,425, 83% papillary). Cases were matched to controls (n = 67,903) by mother's birth year, country, and county of residence. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models adjusting for

A review of the risks and consequences of adolescent pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risks and consequences of young maternal age on both the mother and the newborn. STUDY DESIGN: A comprehensive literature review on the risks and consequences of adolescent pregnancy was performed. RESULTS: Young maternal age is associated with an increased risk of maternal anemia, infections, eclampsia and preeclampsia, emergency cesarean delivery, postpartum depression and inadequate breastfeeding initiation. Infants of teenage mothers are more likely to be premature and have a low birth weight, and are at an increased risk for respiratory distress syndrome and a

Birth prevalence of congenital cytomegalovirus among infants of HIV-infected women on prenatal antiretroviral prophylaxis in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A high rate of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been documented in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed infants in industrialized settings, both in the pre- and post-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era. Only limited data on the birth prevalence of congenital CMV among infants of HIV-infected women on prenatal antiretroviral (ARV) prophylaxis are available from sub-Saharan Africa, despite a high prevalence of both infections. We evaluated the prevalence of congenital CMV in HIV-exposed infants in the Western Cape, South Africa. METHODS: HIV-infected mothers w

Placental abruption.

Placental abruption complicates about 1% of pregnancies and is a leading cause of vaginal bleeding in the latter half of pregnancy. It is also an important cause of perinatal mortality and morbidity. The maternal effect of abruption depends primarily on its severity, whereas its effect on the fetus is determined both by its severity and the gestational age at which it occurs. Risk factors for abruption include prior abruption, smoking, trauma, cocaine use, multifetal gestation, hypertension, preeclampsia, thrombophilias, advanced maternal age, preterm premature rupture of the membranes, intrau…

Short Breastfeeding Duration is Associated With Premature Onset of Female Breast Cancer.

Currently, there is controversy concerning potential factors that contribute to the development of breast cancer. Our study analyzed the possible association between weight status, cigarette consumption, lactation period, serum estrogen levels, family history of breast cancer, and age at breast cancer diagnosis. We conducted a retrospective study at a University Hospital in Granada (Spain) by consulting the medical records of 524 women aged 19 to 91 years, all of them diagnosed and treated for breast cancer from 2011 to 2019. Our findings indicated that in non-morbidly obese females who were a

Lung cancer in pregnancy: report of nine cases from an international collaborative study.

OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is an uncommon diagnosis during pregnancy. The combination of smoking in young women, increased maternal age during pregnancy, and increasing incidence of lung cancer worldwide may cause an increase of pregnancy associated lung cancer. Other factors affecting the rate were indication for the scan and gestational age at the time of the scan. In the overall group, disregarding maternal age, the spontaneous abortion rate was 2.3%.
