CONCLUSIONS: Although in vitro the enzyme immunoassay tests are more sensitive than the latex agglutination tests, sensitivity in vivo is too low to recommend the use of rapid antigen tests for general screening.

The diagnostic utility of immunochromatographic (Leptotek) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA; Panbio) tests for the detection of Leptospira immunoglobulin M antibodies was assessed in febrile adults admitted in Vientiane, Laos. Both tests demonstrated poor diagnostic accuracy using admission serum (Leptotek sensitivity of 47.3% and specificity of 75.5%: ELISA sensitivity of 60.9% and specificity of 65.6%) compared to the Leptospira "gold standard" microscopic agglutination test.

The severity of a transfusion reaction depends on alloantibody titres within the recipients' blood. Determination of an agglutination titre of naturally occurring alloantibody may help to assess the risk of transfusion reactions following an unmatched transfusion in a cat population. We studied the anti-IgG-induced agglutination of both normal and abnormal red blood cells (RBC) using a sensitive, automated antiglobulin test. Normal RBC agglutinated strongly with anti-IgG antibody, indicating that IgG was present on the erythrocyte membrane. A study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis and infecting serovars across livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs) in Trinidad using the microscopic agglutination test with an international panel of 23 serovars. Waldenström type macroglobulinaemia has been found in a Nigerian woman with rheumatoid arthritis and cryoglobulinaemia. Twenty-nine per cent. of the total serum proteins were macroglobulins, consisting of 27% 19 S and 2% 29 S. Agglutination tests for rheumatoid arthritis were positive.

A monoclonal antibody-based latex agglutination test for detection of circulating trypanosome antigens in animal serum was evaluated for the ability to detect natural T. brucei, T. congolense and T. vivax infections in cattle, sheep and goats in Ghana. The test detected antigens in 180/422 (42.7%) of cattle, 27/131 (20.6%) of sheep and 14/79 (17.7%) of the goats. A 47-year-old male was admitted because of persistent jaundice. Akiyami C disease was diagnosed by serological tests using the microscopic agglutination tests. The source was considered to be a water contaminated with leptospiras which he had drunk while working at a civil engineering job. The reported cases of Akiyami C disease have recently decreased and this is the 6th case reported in the last 15 years.

Staphylococcal coagglutination (CoA) test for the detection of Salmonella typhi O (factor 9) antigen was evaluated as a diagnostic test in typhoid fever. Supernatants from 106 blood cultures with Gram negative bacilli were subjected to CoA test.
