The Robust Relation of Microaggressions with Alcohol-Related Problems Among Black Individuals Who Use Alcohol: the Role of Drinking to Cope with Negative Affect.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is an important area of health disparities among Black individuals in the United States (US). The identification of psycho-sociocultural factors that play a role in alcohol-related problems among this population can inform culturally sensitive prevention and treatment efforts. Psycho-sociocultural models of alcohol misuse posit that some Black Americans may drink (and continue to drink despite drinking-related problems) to alleviate negative affect associated with experiencing race-based discrimination. Although there is a strong link between overt race-based discrimina

Effects of Chronic Voluntary Alcohol Drinking on Thiamine Concentrations, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, and Oxidative Stress in the Brain of Crossed High Alcohol Preferring Mice.

Chronic alcohol drinking can damage the central nervous system via many mechanisms. One of these may involve a deficiency of an essential nutrient, thiamine, as a result of chronic alcohol exposure. Although thiamine deficiency (TD) has often been linked to the neuropathology of alcohol-related brain damage, the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. The crossed high alcohol preferring (cHAP) mice prefer alcohol to water when they have free access. In this study, we used cHAP mice to determine the effect of chronic voluntary alcohol exposure on thiamine levels and neuropathological c…

FGF21, a liver hormone that inhibits alcohol intake in mice, increases in human circulation after acute alcohol ingestion and sustained binge drinking at Oktoberfest.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. However, knowledge of the biological factors that influence ad libitum alcohol intake may be incomplete. Two large studies recently linked variants in the KLB locus with levels of alcohol intake in humans. KLB encodes β-klotho, co-receptor for the liver-derived hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). In mice, FGF21 reduces alcohol intake, and human Fgf21 variants are enriched among heavy drinkers. Thus, the liver may limit alcohol consumption by secreting FGF21. However, whether full-length, act

G9a inhibition reduces stress-potentiated alcohol drinking in both male and female mice: Implications for safe and effective pharmacological therapeutics for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing disease that is difficult to treat, and current therapies are not effective for many patients. Clinical studies show that stress increases heavy alcohol consumption and that stress is a predominant factor in rates of relapse. As such, pharmacotherapies that reduce stress-related alcohol drinking might be beneficial clinically. We recently showed that viral vector-mediated reduction of the epigenetic enzyme G9a (also known as euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2 or EHMT2) in the nucleus accumbens blocks stress-potentiate…

Associations of State-Level Alcohol Policies and Population Use Rates With Alcohol Use and Binge Drinking Among U.S. 4-Year College Students, 2008-2019.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of binge drinking among U.S. college students has decreased over the last two decades but remains high. We examined the extent to which state-level alcohol policies and drinking environments are associated with excessive and underage alcohol use among college students. METHOD: Repeated cross-sectional surveys were administered to 902,486 college students ages 18-24 years from 591 4-year institutions in 47 states biannually from 2008 to 2019. Time-varying, state-level Alcohol Policy Scale (APS) scores and population-level binge drinking and alcohol consumption rates w

Binge drinking trajectories across adolescence and early adulthood: Associations with genetic influences for dual-systems impulsive personality traits, alcohol consumption, and alcohol use disorder.

Binge drinking is a relatively common pattern of alcohol use among youth with normative frequency trajectories peaking in emerging and early adulthood. Frequent binge drinking is a critical risk factor for not only the development of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) but also increased odds of alcohol-related injury and death, and thus constitutes a significant public health concern. Changes in binge drinking across development are strongly associated with changes in impulsive personality traits (IPTs) which have been hypothesized as intermediate phenotypes associated with genetic risk for heavy al

A combined laboratory and field test of a smartphone breath alcohol device and blood alcohol concentration estimator to facilitate moderate drinking among young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Innovative strategies are needed to reduce young adult drinking. Real-time feedback via mobile health (mHealth) technology (e.g., smartphone devices/apps) may facilitate moderate drinking, yet requires evidence of feasibility, acceptability, and usability. METHOD: Young adults reporting frequent heavy drinking (N = 99, Mage = 23, 51% male) participated in a manualized, brief, motivational interview on recent typical and peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC), then were randomized to use 1 of the 3 forms of technology: (a) smartphone breathalyzer device/app; (b) app that estimates B

Factors predicting change in frequency of heavy drinking days among alcohol-dependent participants in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC).

AIMS: To discover the predictors of change in the frequency of heavy drinking (HD) over a 4-year period in alcohol dependent (AD)-individuals identified in the general population, namely, among participants of the US National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions interviewed at Wave 1 (2001-2002) and at Wave 2 (2004-2005). METHODS: The study cohort included subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for AD in the past year at Wave 1 (n = 1484), who were present at Wave 2 (n = 1172) and had complete data on factors of interest (n = 1123). Frequency of HD was defined as the number of HD

How did a lower drink-drive limit affect bar trade and drinking practices? A qualitative study of how alcohol retailers experienced a change in policy.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Reducing the legal drink-drive limit from 0.08% to 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) can reduce road traffic accidents and deaths if properly enforced. Reduced limits may be opposed by alcohol retail and manufacturing industries on the basis of commercial impact. Our aim was to qualitatively explore how a reduction in the drink-drive limit from 0.08% to 0.05% BAC in Scotland, was experienced by bar owners or managers, including any resultant changes in customer drinking or business practice. This is the first study of this type. DESIGN AND METHODS: Semi-structured

Do consequences of a given pattern of drinking vary by socioeconomic status? A mortality and hospitalisation follow-up for alcohol-related causes of the Finnish Drinking Habits Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic differences in alcohol-related mortality and hospitalisations, as based on register data, are larger than socioeconomic differences in various types of harmful drinking, as based on survey data. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to use a follow-up study to examine whether differential drinking patterns between socioeconomic groups explain the observed differences in alcohol-related mortality and hospitalisations, or whether similar drinking patterns predict higher mortality among lower socioeconomic groups. METHOD: The study population included Finns who participated in cross-

"It's better for me to drink, at least the stress is going away": perspectives on alcohol use during pregnancy among South African women attending drinking establishments.

The Western Cape of South Africa has one of the highest rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) globally. Reducing alcohol use during pregnancy is a pressing public health priority for this region, but insight into the experiences of women who drink during pregnancy is lacking. Convenience sampling in alcohol-serving venues was used to identify women who were currently pregnant (n = 12) or recently post-partum (n = 12) and reported drinking during the pregnancy period. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted between April and August 2013. Interviews explored drinking narratives

Understanding positive heavy drinking attitudes: daily variability and their role in intervention-related changes in alcohol use.

PURPOSE: Alcohol use and its related harms remain highly prevalent among young adults, with heavy drinking and alcohol-induced blackouts posing significant public health risks. This study had two goals: first, we examined attitudes toward heavy drinking as both stable (between-person) and dynamic (within-person) predictors of alcohol use and consequences among heavy-drinking young adults. Furthermore, we explored changes in attitudes toward heavy drinking as a mediator of intervention efficacy. METHOD: The data for the current work come from a larger randomized controlled trial where particip

Shared Decision-Making on Drinking Alcohol in Older Adults Living in Residential Care Facilities: Care Professionals' Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults living in residential care facilities (RCFs) may wish to drink alcohol, despite adverse outcomes. Shared decision-making (SDM) could support care professionals in balancing residents' autonomy and well-being with the adverse outcomes to all residents and staff. This study aims to assess factors that could affect shared decision-making (SDM) and care professionals' behaviour regarding residents' alcohol use in residential care facilities (RCFs). METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional study and explorative analyses were chosen to answer the research question. Care pr

Informing low-risk drinking guidelines: a secondary, cross-sectional data analysis of alcohol use and health utility.

BACKGROUND: Low-risk drinking guidelines seldom incorporate quality of life (QOL). This secondary data analysis explores the relationship between drinking patterns and QoL. METHODS: We estimate the relationship between specific drinking behaviors and QoL, as measured by health utility, which reflects individuals' preferences for living in states of health. We use cross-sectional data from the US nationally representative National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III dataset. We modeled individuals' health utility as quadratic functions of the typical frequency of drinkin

Examining heterogeneity in pathways between alcohol-related factors and drinking during topiramate pharmacotherapy: A person-specific analysis.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) is complicated by person-specific heterogeneity in factors related to AUD risk, maintenance, and recovery. To advance precision treatment, it is important to study sources of variability in the determinants of AUD treatment response. METHODS: We analyzed interactive voice response data measuring nightly drinking, desire to drink, self-efficacy to resist drinking, and drinking expectancies from two, 12-week randomized placebo-controlled trials of topiramate for drinking reduction (N = 214). World Health Organization risk drinking levels were

Characterization of breeding success and litter characteristics in the New Mexico Alcohol Research Center moderate drinking paradigm.

Rodent models of prenatal alcohol exposure are a powerful tool for studying causal factors of prenatal exposure effects. Under the New Mexico Alcohol Research Center, we combined a voluntary drinking-in-the-dark (DID) paradigm with a Volumetric Drinking Monitor (VDM) system to quantify maternal ethanol (EtOH) intake, drinking duration, and drinking patterns throughout gestation and determined whether these variables altered breeding success or early offspring development. Female C57BL/6J mice received daily 2-h access to either 20% EtOH or water using the VDM system. Following a two-week accli

Perceived Relations Between Pain and Alcohol Use Are Associated with Hazardous Drinking Among Adults with Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Hazardous alcohol use is highly prevalent among adults with chronic pain. Although there is reason to believe that perceptions about the relationships between pain and alcohol use are important for understanding, predicting, and intervening upon alcohol use behavior, no prior work has explored such perceptions or their association with hazardous drinking. METHODS: Among 273 adults who reported chronic pain and alcohol consumption (Mage = 33), we examined the relationship between perceptions regarding pain and alcohol use and indices of hazardous alcohol behaviors.
