UNLABELLED: Expanded-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESC-R-E) have disseminated beyond clinical settings, but their occurrence and genomic epidemiology in wildlife remain poorly characterized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. ESC-R may result from the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or AmpC-type cephalosporinases. We investigated the prevalence, resistance mechanisms, and population structure of ESC-R-E in free-ranging wildlife, captive wild animals, and zoo workers in Algeria. Between October 2021 and June 2023, 1,899 fecal samples were…

Around one-third of adults in Algeria have hypertension, but > 40% are unaware they have the disease, and of those receiving treatment, only ~ 20-30% have adequate blood pressure (BP) control. Recommended starting treatment is an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blocker plus a calcium channel blocker (CCB) or diuretic. A single-pill combination of perindopril/amlodipine (ACEi/CCB) recently became available in Algeria. Twelve Algerian hypertension experts reviewed the clinical evidence regarding this therapeutic combination to determine its potential role f…

Various host characteristics (i. e., feeding habits, geographic distribution) and habitat characteristics (i.e., seasonality) influence the structure of parasite assemblages. To compare the parasite assemblages of hosts representatives of two genera of the same fish family, simultaneously occupying a geographic region, and to examine if seasonal variations influence parasite occurrence and abundance, we examined the parasite assemblages of two sympatric marine fish, Pagrus pagrus (n = 308) and Pagellus bogaraveo (n = 315) off the coast of Algeria in the western Mediterranean. Specimens were co…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most important neglected disease reported in North Africa, Algeria ranks second in the world with more than 5000 cases per year. In Algeria, two rodent species Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi, are so far known as proven reservoirs of Leishmania major, however, they are absent in several endemic localities. In this study, we experimentally infected Gerbillus rodents trapped around human dwellings in Illizi, Algeria to assess their susceptibility to L. major. Seven gerbils, morphologically and molecularly identified as Gerbillus amoenus, were intradermally…

In Algeria, Human myiasis, essentially ophtalmomyiasis, are known for a long time. Most of cases are due to Oestrus ovis. In this papers the authors report, in a shepherd, the first case of otomyiasis due to Chrysomya bezziana larvae, a species still unknown in North Africa. This observation which indicates the presence of the species in a Northern part of Algeria is also the first report of the insect outside of its endemic traditional area.

During 1967 to 1985, three cases of listeriosis were reported in Algeria; at that time Listeria monocytogenes caused several thousand cases of meningitis and sepsis in the world. In order to determine the frequency and bacteriologic characteristics of strain isolated in Algeria, a prospective investigation was carried from 1985 to 1989 in humans and animals samples. Sensitivity tests to antibiotics (MIC) point out that all isolates strains are resistant to cephalosporins (first and third generation), but are susceptible to Ampicillin and Gentamicin which ought to constitute the treatment basis…

OBJECTIVE: Haemophilia A (HA) is associated with high clinical and healthcare burden. We developed an Excel-based model comparing current practice to improved management in severe HA patients currently managed on demand (OD). Outcomes included short- and long-term bleed events. Expected annual bleeds were estimated based on locally-derived OD annualised bleed rate (ABR), adjusted by relative prophylaxis-related ABRs (published literature). The objective of our study was to explore the impact of improving HA prophylaxis in target countries with limited published data (Algeria, Argentina, Chile,…

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), a pathogen with a high capability for infection. The disease primarily affects ruminants, leading to reproductive disorders, but can also be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or their products. In Algeria, Q fever is endemic, but little is known about the presence and circulation of C. burnetii in domestic goats. This study aimed to perform a multicentric serological analysis of C. burnetii antibodies in domestic goats from four provinces in the North East Region of Algeria. A total of 504 goat s…

The biodiversity of extreme halophilic enzymes produced in three different solar salterns in the Bejaia region of northern Algeria was investigated, with a focus on the characterization of amylases. Generally, 101-103 CFU/g (ml) of extreme halophiles have been detected. 126 extreme halophilic microorganisms have been isolated. The isolates were found to produce several enzymes: amylase, esterase, gelatinase, laccase, lipase, caseinase, and cellulase. Four amylase-producing strains were identified as Haloarcula sp. strain ICHS1, Natrinema altunense strain MS1, Haloferax gibbonsii strain MS2, an…

Despite control/eradication programs, brucellosis, major worldwide zoonosis due to the Brucella genus, is endemic in Northern Africa and remains a major public health problem in the Maghreb region (Algeria/Morocco/Tunisia). Brucella melitensis biovar 3 is mostly involved in human infections and infects mainly small ruminants. Human and animal brucellosis occurrence in the Maghreb seems still underestimated and its epidemiological situation remains hazy. This study summarizes official data, regarding Brucella melitensis infections in Algeria, from 1989 to 2012, with the purpose to provide appro…

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most prevalent malignancy globally, with incidence rates rising steadily in Algeria. Prognostic assessment of CRC increasingly relies on molecular profiling, particularly mutations in the KRAS gene a critical determinant of resistance to anti-EGFR therapies in metastatic disease.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the KRAS mutational spectrum and its association with clinicopathological features in CRC patients from Batna, Eastern Algeria.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of 91 cases, KRAS mutations were identified in 46.2% of tumor…
