Meridional Amblyopia and Spectacle Correction: A Prospective Interventional Study of Children Aged 4-11 Years.

Background Amblyopia, often linked to high astigmatism in children, presents challenges in understanding the contributing factors and visual outcomes. Methods A total of 132 samples were included in this prospective pre- and post-interventional study using the purposive sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were applied for age, gender, uncorrected visual acuity, corrected visual acuity, type, and magnitude of astigmatism. A repeated measure ANOVA was used, and a paired t-test was also done for groups with corrected visual acuity in meridional amblyopia at two follow-ups spaced six months…

Spontaneous recovery from amblyopia following fellow eye vision loss: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of traditional amblyopia therapies is largely restricted to childhood. However, spontaneous recovery in adulthood is possible following vision loss in the fellow eye due to enucleation, injury, or disease. The twofold purpose of this study was (1) to define the incidence of recovery and (2) to elucidate the clinical features associated with greater amblyopic eye gains. METHODS: A systematic review of three databases yielded 24 reports containing 110 cases of patients ≥18 years old with unilateral amblyopia and vision-limiting fellow eye pathology. RESULTS: Our a…

Treating amblyopia using altered reality enhances the fine-scale functional correlations in early visual areas.

Amblyopia is a developmental visual disorder that causes substantial visual deficits. Studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging have disclosed abnormal brain functional connectivity (FC) both across long-range cortical sites and within the visual cortex in amblyopes, which is considered to be related to impaired visual functions. However, little work has examined whether restoring the vision of amblyopes accompanies with an improvement of FC. Here in adult amblyopes and healthy participants, we compared their brain FC before and after an altered-reality adaptation train…

Altered functional interactions between neurons in primary visual cortex of macaque monkeys with experimental amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a disorder in which vision through one of the eyes is degraded, arises because of defective processing of information by the visual system. Amblyopia often develops in humans after early misalignment of the eyes (strabismus) and can be simulated in macaque monkeys by artificially inducing strabismus. In such amblyopic animals, single-unit responses in primary visual cortex (V1) are appreciably reduced when evoked by the amblyopic eye compared with the other (fellow) eye. However, this degradation in single V1 neuron responsivity is not commensurate with the marked losses in visual s…

False amblyopia prediction in strabismic patients by fixation preference testing correlates with contralateral ocular dominance.

BACKGROUND: Binocular fixation preference testing is commonly used to predict strabismic amblyopia in preverbal children. However, false positives can occur and can lead to unnecessary patching treatment. We explored potential causes for this phenomenon. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study (2013-2014) of consecutive verbal strabismic patients without incomitance or decreased vision other than strabismic amblyopia, binocular fixation preference testing was graded from 1 (strong preference) to 4 (free alteration), with grade 1 or 2 considered predictive of amblyopia and the examiner maske…

Two spatio-temporal filters in human vision. 2. Selective modification in amblyopia, albinism, and hemianopia.

We have used the psychophysical methods described in the first paper of this series (Holliday and Ruddock, 1983) to determine selected spati … subjects. It is concluded from these data that the changes in the spatial responses associated with amblyopia do not simply reflect eccentric fixation of the target. The ST2 spatial response was measured for the "normal" and "amblyopic" eyes of 9 amblyopes (7 strabismic and 2 refractive). There is no significant difference between the average amblyopic resp …

Comparison of conventional occlusion and occlusion combined with physical exercise in adults with amblyopia: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia in adults has traditionally been regarded as difficult to treat because cortical plasticity declines substantially after critical period. Recent neurophysiological research suggests that aerobic exercise can transiently enhance neuroplasticity, thereby potentially improving the outcome of visual rehabilitation. The present study aimed to evaluate whether incorporating physical exercise with conventional occlusion therapy can augment visual recovery in adults with unilateral amblyopia. METHODS: This prospective, randomized controlled trial included 60 adults aged 18-40 years…

Attenuated and delayed neural activity in cortical microcircuitry of monocular processing and binocular interactions in human amblyopia.

Disruption of retinal input early in life can lead to amblyopia, a condition characterized by reduced visual acuity after optical correction. While functional abnormalities in the early visual areas have been observed in amblyopia, mesoscale deficits in cortical microcircuitry across cortical depth remain unexplored in humans. Using a combination of submillimeter 7T fMRI and EEG frequency-tagging methods, we investigated neural deficits in monocular processing and binocular interactions in human adults with unilateral amblyopia. The results revealed attenuated and delayed monocular activity in…

Evidence for hypermetropia, astigmatism, and anisometropia associated with, and early glasses preventing, the development of amblyopia and accommodative esotropia.

In many countries that have population-wide screening for amblyopia by measurement of visual acuity (VA), additional screening for refractive errors to prevent the development of amblyopia is being considered. We assessed the available evidence for the association between high refractive error in young children and the development of amblyopia and accommodative esotropia, and the influence of early prescription of glasses. The following search terms were used: refractive errors, amblyopia or strabismus, and children. Included were articles describing associations between high hypermetropia, as…
