[Amnestic episodes in migraine. A contribution to the differential diagnosis of transient global amnesia (ictus amnésique)].

In comparison with 27 similar cases, sampled from literature, 4 observations of amnesic episodes in migraine are presented and discussed. These disturbances known as so-called "Migranedammerattacken" seem to be identical with transient global amnesia in all respects. In most of cases, they occur as migraine-precursors or - equivalents. Headache, vegetative und neurological symptoms are frequent but not necessary companions. It is proposed to look for migraine disposition in all cases of transient global amnesia. Perhaps, this approach might be of some use to understand their enigmatic pathogen

Memory and Resting-State Connectivity in Acute Transient Global Amnesia: A Case-Control fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a striking model of isolated amnesia. While hippocampal lesions are well described, the network-level mechanisms and the precise neuropsychological profile remain debated. Our objective was thus to characterize functional and neuropsychological correlates of acute TGA and their longitudinal evolution. METHODS: Prospective, single-center case-control study of 20 patients with acute TGA and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants completed neuropsychological testing and underwent structural and functional MRI at thr

Clinical features and prognosis of transient global amnesia in Israel: 6 years' single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a benign neurological syndrome of unknown etiology, causing sudden anterograde amnesia that lasts up to 24 h. During the episode of TGA, other cognitive functions are normal. This is the first study describing the characteristics of the disease in Israel. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of TGA at Shamir Medical Center (SMC) between January 2016 and December 2021. RESULTS: One-hundred and four patients with confirmed TGA were identified, with an average age of 64 years (range: 39-87). The annual incidence

Distorted time perception in patients with transient global amnesia: time perception task and imaging analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is defined as a sudden and transient episode of memory loss and accompanied by temporal disorientation. However, the mechanism by which time distortion occurs is not clearly elucidated yet. METHODS: Between March 2019 and November 2020, we subjected 30 TGA patients to several time perception tasks and analyzed their magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans and compared the results with age- and sex-matched control group. RESULTS: Among the 60 recruited subjects (64.5 ± 6.3 years), 70% were women. Fourteen patients had only anterograde amnesia. Further

Transient Global Amnesia with Reversible White Matter Lesions: A Variant of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome?

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a self-limited disease characterized by isolated amnesia, which resolves within 24 h. In contrast, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a potentially life-threatening disease that usually presents with seizures, altered mental status, headache, and visual disturbances. It is characterized by reversible vasogenic edema that predominantly involves the parieto-occipital subcortical white matter as shown by neuroimaging studies. To date, there have been no reported cases of PRES with a clinical course resembling TGA. Here we report the case of a

[Memory and metamemory during transient global amnesia: a comparative study about long-term follow up].

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic criteria of transient global amnesia (TGA) establishes that memory functioning has to be recovered in 24 hours. However, there are contradictory data about the existence of long-term sequelae. Furthermore, there is no consensus about which is the most suitable tool in order to use in the assessment of the follow up of these patients. AIMS: To assess episodic memory of TGA patients during amnesic episode and 7, 30 and 90 days after with free recall and Mini-Mental tasks. Moreover, it has been measured patient's metamemory. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 17 TGA patients and 17

Transient global amnesia after ablation of premature ventricular beats arising from the right coronary cusp.

A 58-year-old female underwent PVC ablation within the right coronary cusp for symptomatic PVCs and suspected PVC-induced cardiomyopathy. Immediately after the procedure, she started to complain about feelings of impending doom, disorientation to time and place, and amnesia regarding the procedure. No sensory or motor deficits could be elicited. A thromboembolic event was suspected and she was evaluated by a neurologist. CT scan of her brain was negative. She was diagnosed with transient global amnesia and her mentation returned to baseline within 4 hours after the procedure.

Transient global amnesia associated with the infusion of DMSO-cryopreserved autologous peripheral blood stem cells.

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is a solvent commonly used for the cryopreservation of autologous peripheral blood stem cells (APBSC). Side effects upon infusion of DMSO-cryopreserved APBSC mainly consist of nausea, emesis, chills, rigors, and cardiovascular events, such as bradyarrhythmia or hypotension. We report the case of a patient who received DMSO-cryopreserved APBSC after myeloablative chemotherapy for a relapsing lymphoma. The patient developed a rare reaction during the infusion manifesting as transient global amnesia. The clinical course during the reaction is described and an explanation

[Does brain blood flow HMPAO SPECT withhold the vascular etiopathogenic theory of transient global amnesia?].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological disorder that consists in a sudden loss of anterograd memory and temporospatial disorientation during less than 24 hours. Several precipitating factors have been reported. Conventional neuroimaging scans usually are negative. Different etiopathogenic theories have been postulated but the vascular etiology is the most commonly accepted. CASE REPORTS: Three patients with a typical presentation of TGA are studied. In all of them two brain blood flow HMPAO SPECT were performed, within the first 48 hours from the onset and three months

Increased risk of epilepsy after transient global amnesia: A population-based study in South Korea.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the risk of epilepsy after transient global amnesia (TGA). METHODS: Study population was recruited using the International Classification of Diseases codes from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between 2002 and 2020. The incidence of epilepsy was compared between the TGA (n=12,390) and non-TGA (n=33,868) groups, determined using 1:3 propensity score matching. Using Cox proportional hazard regression model, we obtained adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident epilepsy in the TGA compared with non

COVID-19 Vaccine-Associated Transient Global Amnesia: A Disproportionality Analysis of the WHO Safety Database.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread rapidly, resulting in a global pandemic for which vaccines were quickly developed. As their safety continues to be monitored, cases of transient global amnesia (TGA) following mRNA vaccination with elasomeran have been reported. TGA is characterized by sudden onset of anterograde amnesia with preservation of other cognitive functions and resolution within 24 h. We aimed to investigate the potential link of TGA with COVID-19 vaccines. We queried the World Health Organization VigiBase® for all reports of "Transient global amnesia", up to 6 December 2021

The long-term risk of epilepsy after transient global amnesia: A population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden onset of larger anterograde and milder retrograde amnesia lasting up to 24 h. We aimed to investigate the long-term risk of epilepsy up to 8 years in subjects after TGA in the population-based cohort study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a control cohort study with an 8-year follow-up period. All data was collected retrospectively. From all potential participants more than 18 years of age without epilepsy and TGA history, we identified TGA subjects and non-TGA controls with age, gender and comorbidities matched in a 1:3

Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy with transient global amnesia and cerebellar embolic stroke triggered by existential fear.

BACKGROUND: Embolic stroke is a complication of Tako-Tsubo-cardiomyopathy (TTC), transient left ventricular dysfunction mimicking myocardial infarction without coronary culprit lesion explaining the whole left ventricular dysfunction. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by sudden onset of anterograde amnesia without compromise of other neurologic functions. CASE REPORT: A 57 years old female was admitted because of sudden confusion and loss of her memory after emotional stress. TGA was diagnosed. Because of chest pain and laboratory tests indicating myocardial ischemia, she underw

Longitudinal Cerebral Perfusion Change in Transient Global Amnesia Related to Left Posterior Medial Network Disruption.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is not fully understood. Previous studies using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have reported inconclusive results regarding cerebral perfusion. This study was conducted to identify the patterns of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in TGA patients via longitudinal SPECT analysis. An association between the observed SPECT patterns and a pathophysiological mechanism was considered. METHODS: Based on the TGA registry database of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, 22 TGA patients were retrospectively i

Transient global amnesia: concomitant episodic memory and positron emission tomography assessment in two additional patients.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by a profound but transient deficit of episodic memory. The study of cerebral blood flow and oxygen metabolism with positron emission tomography (PET) provides relevant pathophysiologic data, but only three patients have been reported so far and in only one was concomitant neuropsychological testing performed. We report here the concomitant neuropsychological and PET assessment of two additional patients. Episodic disturbance was characterized by a storage disturbance for one case and an incapacity to learn episodic associations in the other, ill
