The effect of iron supplementation on maternal iron deficiency anemia does not differ by baseline anemia type among Tanzanian pregnant women without severe iron deficiency anemia.

PURPOSE: Whether anemia type modifies the risk of pregnancy and newborn outcomes and the effectiveness of iron supplementation is unclear. We examined the association of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and non-iron deficiency anemia (NIDA) on the risks of these outcomes and the extent to which anemia type modifies the impact of prenatal iron supplementation. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a placebo-controlled trial of iron supplementation among 1450 HIV-negative women in Tanzania. Eligibility criteria included gestational age < 27 weeks, hemoglobin > 85 g/L, and ferritin > 12 µg/L. In…

Central nervous system lesions in Fanconi anemia: Experience from a research center for Fanconi anemia patients.

BACKGROUND: Brain atrophy, abnormal pituitary morphology, corpus callosum, and posterior fossa abnormalities have been described in patients with Fanconi anemia (FA). We aimed to provide an overview of cranial neuroimaging findings and to evaluate the clinical implications in FA patients. PROCEDURE: Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of 34 patients with FA were retrospectively evaluated, and patients' clinical data were correlated with the imaging findings. RESULTS: The patients' median age was 17.6 (range, 3.9-28) years. At least one pathological brain imaging finding was demo…

Clinical features and splenic pathologic changes in patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and congenital hemolytic anemia.

We characterized the pathologic changes in 50 spleens from patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and in 13 spleens from patients with congenital hemolytic anemia. The major pathologic findings in autoimmune hemolytic anemia were mild to pronounced cord congestion and variable white pulp area, erythrophagocytosis in conjunction with an increased polymorphonuclear neutrophil reaction, and increased deposition of hemosiderin and extramedullary hematopoiesis. In contrast, both the severity and the frequency of polymorphonuclear neutrophil reactions, deposition of hemosiderin, and extramedullar…

The association of hepcidin, reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent and anemia-related indicators on anemia in chronic kidney disease.

Hepcidin is an essential regulator of iron homeostasis in chronic kidney disease (CKD) anemia, reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He) can be used to evaluate the availability of iron for erythropoiesis. Previous research has found that hepcidin indirectly regulates RET-He. This study aimed to investigate the association of hepcidin, RET-He and anemia-related indicators on anemia in chronic kidney disease. A total of 230 individuals were recruited, including 40 CKD3-4 patients, 70 CKD5 patients without renal replacement therapy, 50 peritoneal dialysis patients, and 70 hemodialysis patients…

[Secondary hyperparathyroidism and anemia. Effects of a calcimimetic on the control of anemia in chronic hemodialysed patients. Pilot Study].

UNLABELLED: The main cause of resistance to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) used for treatment of anemia in chronic hemodialysed patients (CHP) is the iron deficiency, absolute or functional. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a secondary factor of resistance. Indeed, it has been reported in the literature an improvement of anemia parameters after surgical parathyroidectomy (PTX). The objective of this study is to assess in CHP, the impact of the correction of SHPT by a calcimimetic, cinacalcet (CI), (which is considered as a pharmacological PTX) on the response to ESA, measured b…

The paradox of anemia with high meat intake: a review of the multifactorial etiology of anemia in the Inuit of North America.

Anemia is a serious concern among indigenous populations in North America, and it appears to be widespread among the Inuit despite abundant intakes of heme iron. It is therefore hypothesized that anemia for the Inuit involves other dietary factors not usually associated with animal foods, such as low intakes of vitamin A and/or folate, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Also, Helicobacter pylori infection and/or parasitosis may result in gastrointestinal blood loss and/or functional iron deficiency. This review aims to describe factors that may cause anemia in Inuit populations despite high meat intak…

The Senegal DNA haplotype is associated with the amelioration of anemia in African-American sickle cell anemia patients.

We have previously determined that in African sickle cell anemia (SS) patients three different beta-like globin gene cluster haplotypes are associated with different percent G gamma (one of the two types of non-alpha chains comprising hemoglobin F [HbF]), mean percent HbF, and percent dense cells. We report now that in adult New York SS patients, the presence of at least one chromosome with the Senegal haplotype is associated with higher Hb levels (1.2 g/dL higher) than is found for any other non-Senegal haplotype (P less than .004). The percent reticulocytes and the serum bilirubin levels wer…

Studies on the anemia in experimental African trypanosomiasis. II. The pathogenesis of the anemia in calves infected with Trypanosoma congolense.

It was postulated that the anemia commonly seen in mammalian trypanosomiasis, and specifically in Trypanosoma congolense-infected calves, was of immunological origin. Specifically, we postulated that trypanosome antigen-antibody-complement complexes, deposited on the surface of erythrocytes of infected calves, resulted in their immune elimination leading to clinical anemia. This hypothesis was tested experimentally. Immunoglobulins bound to the erythrocytes of 13 infected calves were detected by a direct antiglobulin test from 7 to 10 days post infection. The reaction was strongest between 3 a…

Dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid induces anemia with combined features of megaloblastic and hemolytic anemia.

This study investigates whether dietary supplementation with conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) induces anemia in mice. Male Kunming White mice were randomly assigned to two groups: one fed a CLA-supplemented diet and the other a linoleic acid (LA)-supplemented diet as control. Compared with those in LA group, periodic manual erythrocyte counts revealed red blood cells (RBCs) in CLA group significantly reduced on days 47 (p < 0.05), 61 (p < 0.01), and 86 (p < 0.001). Complete blood count (CBC) analysis demonstrated that CLA group exhibited 48.96 % lower RBCs (p < 0.01) and 46.49 % reduced hematoc…

Risk factors associated with anemia, iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in rural Nepali pregnant women.

We conducted a cross sectional study to investigate risk factors associated with severe anemia [hemoglobin (Hb) < 8.0 g dl(-1)] and poor iron status among Nepali pregnant women. Socio-demographic, anthropometric, health and dietary data were collected from 3,531 women living in the southeastern plains of Nepal. Stool samples were analyzed for intestinal helminthes. Dark adaptation was assessed using the Night Vision Threshold Test (NVTT). Hb levels were measured in all subjects to detect anemia and the soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) was measured among a subsample of 479 women. The iron st…

Hematologic characterization and chromosomal localization of the novel dominantly inherited mouse hemolytic anemia, neonatal anemia (Nan).

One of the most commonly inherited anemias in man is Hereditary Spherocytosis (HS) with an incidence of 1 in 2000 for persons of Northern European descent. Mouse models of HS include spontaneous inherited hemolytic anemias and those generated by gene targeting. The Neonatal anemia (Nan) mouse is a novel model of HS generated by N-ethyl-N-nitrosurea mutagenesis and suffers from a severe neonatal anemia. Adult Nan mice have a lifelong hemolytic anemia with decreased red blood cell numbers, hematocrit, and hemoglobin, but elevated zinc protoporphyrin levels. Blood smears taken from Nan mice show …

Clinical presentation of severe anemia in pediatric patients with sickle cell anemia seen in Enugu, Nigeria.

Anemia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with sickle cell anemia. In this study, 108 episodes of severe anemia were prospectively evaluated in 108 patients with hemoglobin SS disease attending the pediatric sickle cell clinic of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria. Young children between the ages of 2 and 4 years were found to be at the greatest risk of developing anemic crises (severe anemia). There was a gradual but progressive decline in the incidence of severe anemia in the age range 8-16 years old. Upper respiratory tract infections are the…
