Statins and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors are Associated with Reduced Mortality and Morbidity in Chronic Liver Disease.

Liver fibrosis is a common response to many chronic liver diseases. The aim of our study was to explore whether pharmacotherapy for concurre … rug Register and the Death Certificate Register were linked. We studied whether the use of statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers and antibiotics affected the risk of total mortality, liver-specific mortality and morbidity. We found a reduction in mortality risk for statin users (n = 11,245) with hazard ratios from 0.57 (95% CI: 0.32-0.99) for pa …

Long-term use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors protects against bone loss in African-American elderly men.

UNLABELLED: Greater bone mineral density was observed after treating hypertension using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi). We report decreased rate of bone loss in hypertensive black men using ACEi for 9 years. There may be a gender- and race-specific effect of ACEi in the prevention of age-associated bone loss. PURPOSE: There is evidence of bone mass preservation in patients receiving ACEis, commonly used to treat hypertension. However, limitations of previous studies include being cross-sectional or only including a short-term follow-up of patients using ACEi and including pati

Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors on vascular endothelial function in hypertensive patients after intensive periodontal treatment.

UNLABELLED: There is a relation between vascular endothelial function, atherosclerotic disease, and inflammation. Deterioration of endothelial function has been observed twenty-four hours after intensive periodontal treatment. This effect may be counteracted by the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, which improve endothelial function. The aim of the present study was to evaluate vascular endothelial function after intensive periodontal treatment, in hypertensive patients treated with angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors. A prospective, longitudinal, comparative study involv…

Change in prescription pattern as a potential marker for adverse drug reactions of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) are among the most frequently prescribed groups of medications. ACEI-induced adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are the main reason to discontinue or switch ACEI treatment. ADRs information is not available in prescription databases. OBJECTIVE :To identify a proxy for ACEI-induced ADRs in prescription databases. SETTING: The Rotterdam Study is an ongoing prospective cohort study that started in 1990 in the Netherlands and has included 14,926 subjects aged 45 years or older. METHODS: All ACEI starters from 2000 to 2011 were identified us

Brain-penetrating angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and cognitive change in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease.

Controversy over benefits of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) for treatment of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) led to this alternative investigational approach by the employment of pharmacogenetic methods, correlating the cognitive change of patients with late-onset AD with the presence of common ACE gene promoter polymorphisms, and stratifying the sample in groups of patients who responded or not to the brain-penetrating ACEIs Captopril or Perindopril. A trend was found for treatment with brain-penetrating ACEIs to slow cognitive decline in AD patients with the haplot…

[Prophylactic use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors in indomethacin-induced ulcer and erosion lesions of the stomach].

75% of patients systematically taking over the period of 6 weeks nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have their mucous of gastrointestinal tract pathologically changed. This process is called induced NSAID gastropathy. Inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme (I-ACE) seems to have gastroprotective effect by enhancing level of endogenous prostaglandins. Besides, an application of I-ACE reduces angiotensin II formation and activates renin-kallicrein-kinin system resulting in nitrogen oxide formation that is in its turn an important component of reparative process of mucous of gastrointestina

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors revert abnormal right ventricular filling in patients with restrictive left ventricular disease.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to determine mechanisms underlying abnormalities of right ventricular (RV) diastolic function seen in heart failure. BACKGROUND: It is not clear whether these right-sided abnormalities are due to primary RV disease or are secondary to restrictive physiology on the left side of the heart. The latter regresses with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition (ACE-I). METHODS: Transthoracic echo-Doppler measurements of left- and right-ventricular function in 17 patients with systolic left ventricular (LV) disease and restrictive filling before and 3 weeks after the institut

Acute renal failure after the use of angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors in patients without renal artery stenosis.

During a 4-year period, acute renal failure was observed in 27 patients (mean age 65 years) treated by various angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for hypertension, heart failure, or a combination of both. None had significant renal artery stenosis on angiography. Overt volume depletion was present in 21 and hypotension in 12 cases. All patients received diuretic therapy and/or a low-salt diet. Other facilitating factors included cardiac failure, pre-existing chronic renal insufficiency, combined therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and diabetes mellitus. Twenty-two p

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers Rescue Memory Defects in Drosophila-Expressing Alzheimer's Disease-Related Transgenes Independently of the Canonical Renin Angiotensin System.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative disorder that causes progressive memory and cognitive decline. Recently, studies have reported that inhibitors of the mammalian renin angiotensin system (RAS) result in a significant reduction in the incidence and progression of AD by unknown mechanisms. Here, we used a genetic and pharmacological approach to evaluate the beneficial effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in Drosophila expressing AD-related transgenes. Importantly, while ACE orthologs have been identified in Drosophila, oth

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors vs. Angiotensin Receptor Blockers for the Treatment of Hypertension in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: Why We Favour Angiotensin Receptor Blockers.

Cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus. The incidence or progression of kidney disease is also common in these patients. Several clinical trials have established the efficacy of angiotensin receptor blockers for the prevention of adverse cardiovascular and renal outcomes in this population and are summarized in this review article. Head-to-head comparison of angiotensin receptor blockers with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors has shown similar cardioprotective and renoprotective properties of both medication classes. H…

Angiotensin I-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor Activity of Some Plants Used in Thai Indigenous Medicine.

The inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to lower angiotensin is important in the treatment of hypertension (HT). ACE inhibitory activity is rarely documented in Thai traditional and indigenous medicine. Here, we evaluated the angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory (ACEi) activity through bio-screening of selected medicinal plant species traditionally used for HT treatment by ethnic communities in northern Thailand, including Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC., Clerodendrum chinense (Osbeck) Mabb., Rotheca serrata (L.) Steane & Mabb., and Zingiber purpureum Roscoe. Using an in vitro

A Case of Aquagenic Syringeal Acrokeratoderma in a Male Patient Undergoing Treatment With an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor.

Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma (ASA) is a rare dermatological condition characterized by the transient appearance of edematous, white, translucent papules on the palms following water exposure. While the condition is most commonly associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) and predominantly affects young women, this report presents a unique case in a 24-year-old man without a history of cystic fibrosis. The patient reported a 10-month history of painful, pruritic eruptions on the hands following exposure to water. Symptoms resolved within an hour post-exposure but were persistent and increasing

The therapeutic potential of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor enalapril to ameliorate muscle atrophy in a murine model.

Muscle atrophy due to limb immobilization and inactivity is a common consequence of many diseases and treatment processes. One of the systems activated in inflammatory conditions is the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effects of one of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, enalapril, on improving muscle atrophy caused by immobility. The study was conducted in three groups: a control, an atrophy, and an atrophy group treated with enalapril on Balb/c mice. After tying a splint to cause atrophy in one of the legs, dai
