Barriers to rabies control through mass dog vaccination in rural Uganda: Insights from community perspectives and key informant interviews.

BACKGROUND: Globally, rabies claims about 59,000 human lives annually, and 99% of human transmission is by dogs. The disease is entirely preventable through mass dog vaccination. Despite this, only an estimated 10% of dogs in Uganda are vaccinated, and the reasons for this low uptake are not fully understood. This study investigated barriers to mass dog vaccination for rabies control in Kyegegwa, a rural Ugandan district. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative study was conducted with eight key informants (KIs) and twelve focus groups (FGs) with participants from twelve randomly selected parishes. Aud

Mechanisms of YAP1-mediated trophoblast ferroptosis in recurrent pregnancy loss.

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study is to investigate the function of YAP1 in the trophoblast ferroptosis and maternal-fetal interface communication of RPL. METHODS: We collected 25 villous tissues and detected the expression of YAP1. Cell counting kit-8 assay, scratch wound-healing assay, and Matrigel invasion assay were performed to observe the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HTR-8/SVneo and JAR cells. Subsequently, measured the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), SLC7A11, SOD2, and GPX4. Ultimately, the use of ferroptosis activ

Differences in BTBR T+ tf/J and C57BL/6J mice on probabilistic reversal learning and stereotyped behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a class of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impairments in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as restricted interests and repetitive behavior. This latter class of symptoms often includes features such as compulsive behaviors and resistance to change. The BTBR T+ tf/J mouse strain has been used as an animal model to investigate the social communication and restricted interest features in ASD. Less is known about whether this mouse strain models cognitive flexibility deficits also observed in ASD. The present e

Masticatory muscle defects in hemifacial microsomia: a new embryological concept.

First arch syndromes correspond to a wide spectrum of human latero-facial congenital anomalies affecting cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) derivatives of the first pharyngeal arch (PA1). The abnormal traits display variable quantitative expression and are often unilateral. Mandibular skeletal defects are invariably accompanied by hypoplasia or agenesis of masticatory muscles, but no explanation has been proposed for this association. Indeed, during embryonic development, CNCCs give only rise to skeletal components of the head while muscles derive from cephalic myogenic mesodermal cells (CMMCs

Whole-genome sequencing of toxigenic Clostridioides difficile reveals multidrug resistance and virulence genes in strains of environmental and animal origin.

BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile has been recognized as an emerging pathogen in both humans and animals. In this context, antimicrobial resistance plays a major role in driving the spread of this disease, often leading to therapeutic failure. Moreover, recent increases in community-acquired C. difficile infections have led to greater numbers of investigations into the animal origin of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic similarities between 23 environmental and animal isolates by using whole-genome sequencing and to determine antimicrobial resistance and virulenc

Autocrine and paracrine actions of ATP in rat carotid body.

Carotid bodies are peripheral chemoreceptors that detect lowering of arterial blood O(2) level. The carotid body comprises clusters of glomus (type I) cells surrounded by glial-like sustentacular (type II) cells. Hypoxia triggers depolarization and cytosolic [Ca(2+)] ([Ca(2+)](i)) elevation in glomus cells, resulting in the release of multiple transmitters, including ATP. While ATP has been shown to be an important excitatory transmitter in the stimulation of carotid sinus nerve, there is considerable evidence that ATP exerts autocrine and paracrine actions in carotid body. ATP acting via P2Y(

Role of urotensin II in health and disease.

Urotensin II (UII) is an 11 amino acid cyclic peptide originally isolated from the goby fish. The amino acid sequence of UII is exceptionally conserved across most vertebrate taxa, sharing structural similarity to somatostatin. UII binds to a class of G protein-coupled receptor known as GPR14 or the urotensin receptor (UT). UII and its receptor, UT, are widely expressed throughout the cardiovascular, pulmonary, central nervous, renal, and metabolic systems. UII is generally agreed to be the most potent endogenous vasoconstrictor discovered to date. Its physiological mechanisms are similar in s

Gender transformative innovation: Women's inclusion in livestock vaccine systems in northern Ghana.

CONTEXT: Owning livestock can support women's empowerment and progress toward gender-equitable agri-food systems. Gender inequality, however, can reduce women's ownership of livestock and access to animal vaccines. Gender accommodative approaches (GAAs), and more recently gender transformative approaches (GTAs), are increasingly implemented in development interventions. However, their impact on women's empowerment has not been systematically tested. Here, we describe the 'Women Rear Project', implemented in northern Ghana between 2019 and 2023, and assess the impact of GTAs and GAAs on women's

Intestinal parasitic infections and associated epidemiological drivers in two rural communities of the Bolivian Chaco.

INTRODUCTION: In 2013 a coproparasitological survey was carried out in two rural communities of the Bolivian Chaco to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) and to investigate on possible infection drivers through a questionnaire interview. METHODOLOGY: Faecal samples were examined by microscopy. Samples positive for Entamoeba histolytica complex and Blastocystis were molecularly examined to identify the species/subtypes involved. RESULTS: The overall infection rate was 86%, identical in both communities and mostly due to protozoa. Soil-transmitted helminths were

One Health surveillance approaches for melioidosis and glanders: The Malaysian perspective.

The One Health concept was initiated to promote the integration of human, animal, and environmental ecosystems into healthcare to ensure effective control and the sustainable governance of multifaceted health matters. Climate change, deforestation, and rigorous farming disrupt the environment, which serves as the natural habitat for many animals and microbes, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission between humans and animals. Melioidosis (neglected tropical diseases) and glanders are of humans and animals caused by the gram-negative bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei and its close re

Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases Producing E. coli in Wildlife, yet Another Form of Environmental Pollution?

Wildlife is normally not exposed to clinically used antimicrobial agents but can acquire antimicrobial resistant bacteria through contact with humans, domesticated animals and the environment, where water polluted with feces seems to be the most important vector. Escherichia coli, an ubiquitous commensal bacterial species colonizing the intestinal tract of mammals and birds, is also found in the environment. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases producing E. coli (ESBL-E. coli) represent a major problem in human and veterinary medicine, particular in nosocomial infections. Additionally an onset of

Participatory Approaches to Risk Assessment Across One Health Disciplines: A Scoping Review.

Risk assessments for emerging infectious disease threats are often conducted independently of affected communities. Participatory approaches to risk assessment present an opportunity to integrate community knowledge early in the risk-based decisionmaking process. We conducted a scoping review to understand the breadth of evidence from human, animal, and environmental health disciplines for integrating community participation in steps of the risk assessment process. A systematic literature search in PubMed, Scopus, Ei Compendex, Embase, Web of Science, and Global Health Database identified 4993

Symbiont Identity Impacts Prokaryotic Microbiome Dynamics During Heat Stress in a Model System for Corals.

The coral microbiome is highly complex, and interactions between microbiome members have been proposed as an important component of coral thermotolerance. However, establishing causal links among specific microbiome members remains difficult in corals because these communities are diverse and difficult to manipulate experimentally. We used Aiptasia, an emerging coral model system, to test how algal symbiont identity influences the structure and dynamics of the prokaryotic microbiome during heat stress. We generated clonal Aiptasia lines hosting two well-defined strains of photosynthetic algae

Contrast-marking prosodic emphasis in Williams syndrome: results of detailed phonetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Past reports on the speech production of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) suggest that their prosody is anomalous and may lead to challenges in spoken communication. While existing prosodic assessments confirm that individuals with WS fail to use prosodic emphasis to express contrast, those reports typically lack detailed phonetic analysis of speech data. The present study examines the acoustic properties of speech prosody, aiming for the future development of targeted speech interventions. AIMS: The study examines the three primary acoustic correlates of prosodic emphasis

Association of Common Zoonotic Pathogens With Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

Animal farming has intensified significantly in recent decades, with the emergence of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in industrialized nations. The congregation of susceptible animals in CAFOs can lead to heavy environmental contamination with pathogens, promoting the emergence of hyper-transmissible, and virulent pathogens. As a result, CAFOs have been associated with emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, hepatitis E virus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Streptococcus suis, livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Cryptosporidium parvu

Extrapituitary production of anterior pituitary hormones: an overview.

Protein hormones from the anterior pituitary gland have well-established endocrine roles in their peripheral target glands. It is, however, now known that these proteins are also produced within many of their target tissues, in which they act as local autocrine or paracrine factors, with physiological and/or pathophysiological significance. This emerging concept is the focus of this brief review.

Regulation of testicular function in the stallion: an intricate network of endocrine, paracrine and autocrine systems.

It is well established in many mammalian species, including the horse that normal testicular function is dependent upon a functional hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis, which involves classic feedback mechanisms. The major HPT hormones involved in the stallion are gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T), estrogens (Es) and inhibin (INH). Although prolactin (PRL) fluctuates with season in the stallion and both PRL and thyroid hormone (TH) affect reproduction in other male species, their effects on stallion r

Advancing vector biology research: a community survey for future directions, research applications and infrastructure requirements.

Vector-borne pathogens impact public health, animal production, and animal welfare. Research on arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, and midges which transmit pathogens to humans and economically important animals is crucial for development of new control measures that target transmission by the vector. While insecticides are an important part of this arsenal, appearance of resistance mechanisms is increasingly common. Novel tools for genetic manipulation of vectors, use of Wolbachia endosymbiotic bacteria, and other biological control mechanisms to prevent pathogen transmis

Is the Impact of Starvation on the Gut Microbiota Specific or Unspecific to Anorexia Nervosa? A Narrative Review Based on a Systematic Literature Search.

BACKGROUND: The role of the gut microbiota in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has long been neglected by researchers, although the fact that the former is known to play an important role in health, disease and weight regulation. Cycles of overweight and underweight due to natural states of starvation and refeeding are normal in many vertebrates in their ecological niches. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to compare the similarities and differences of the gut microbiota in eating disorders with conditions of fasting and refeeding in other vertebrates. METHOD: A systematic literature search was con
