Continuous biliary pressure and electromyographic activity of the sphincter of Oddi and gastrointestinal tract were recorded in conscious opossums following administration of analgesic drugs. Morphine, meperidine, and pentazocin increased significantly the duration of the migrating motor complex (MMC) cycle. Periods of 1-2 minutes of intense burst of spike potentials were seen in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum following administration of morphine (8 experiments), meperidine (6 experiments), and pentazocin (3 experiments). The biliary pressure in the control studies was similar to that foll

Brain damage during early life is the main factor in the development of cerebral palsy (CP), which is one of the leading neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood. Few studies, however, have focused on the mechanisms of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation in the brain of individuals with CP. We thus conducted a systematic review of preclinical evidence of structural neurogenesis in early brain damage and the underlying mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of CP. Studies were obtained from Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After screening 2329 studies, 29 studies, co

Enteric helminth infection is an increasing concern in companion animals due to reports of resistance to commonly used anthelmintic drugs. Thus, the assessment of new therapeutic options such as bioactive dietary additives is of high importance. Here, we adapted egg hatch, larval migration, and larval motility assays to screen extracts of several natural ingredients against the canine hookworm Uncinaria stenocephala, a prevalent parasite of dogs in northern Europe. Egg hatch and larval migration assays were established showing that the anthelmintic drugs levamisole and albendazole had strong a

Cell-based therapies are attractive for treating various degenerative disorders and cancer but delivering functional cells to the region of interest in vivo remains difficult. The problem is exacerbated in dense biological matrices such as solid tissues because these environments impose significant steric hindrances for cell movement. Here, we show that neural stem cells transfected with zinc-doped ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (ZnMNPs) can be pulled by an external magnet to migrate to the desired location in the brain. These magnetically labeled cells (Mag-Cells) can migrate because ZnMNPs g

Cadmium (Cd) and its compounds are well-known human carcinogens, but the mechanisms underlying the carcinogenesis are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate whether lncRNA-MALAT1 could serve as a novel biomarker of Cd toxicity in cells, animals and Cd-exposed workers, and regulate cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion. MALAT1 expression increased gradually in CdCl2 transformed 16HBE cells. The cell apoptosis, migration and invasion were significantly inhibited, and the mRNA and protein expression of FOXC2, STAT, BAX, EGFR, and TGF-β1 reduced, but BCL-2 increased (

Alterations in lung function and pulmonary symptoms have been described in patients infected with helminths with a lung cycle. We have previously shown that infection with the nematode Strongyloides venezuelensis induced a significant increase in airway hyperreactivity in infected rats. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that bronchodilation during the lung phase of parasite migration would favor completion of the life cycle and infection indices. For this purpose, S. venezuelensis infected rats were treated with salbutamol during the first 48 h after the nematode infectio

Although cell traffic from the graft into the recipient and from the recipient into the graft had been noticed in allogeneic organ transplantation, little is known following whole-limb allografting. This study was conducted to define cell migration between donor and recipient. Sixty-seven vascularized hind limb allotransplantations were performed in rat sex-mismatched pairs and the recipient animals were treated with FK506 immunosuppression. The ratio of donor and recipient cells was evaluated by semi-quantitative PCR using the specific primers of the Y-chromosome. Allografted limbs had no rej

Thoracic duct lymphocytes (TDL) were labelled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and injected into normal, unanaesthetized rats with either a central venous catheter or a thoracic duct cannula. The blood transit time and the appearance in the lymph was calculated and then the percentages of B, T, T helper, and T suppressor lymphocytes were determined with monoclonal antibodies (Ox12, Ox19, W3/25, and Ox8, respectively). The blood transit time of all subsets was about 30 min. However, the percentage of B lymphocytes from 5 min after injection onwards is reduced (14.5 +/- 1.9%) compared to t

Daily application of 32 mg/kg sodium thiocynate from 1--11th respectively 12th--21st experimental day causes in epinephrectomised guinea pigs at the 26th experimental day an inhibition of cell-mediated immune response (sensitization was induced by intraperitoneal injection of horse serum at the 5th and 7th experimental day). The inhibition of cell-mediated immune response could be demonstrated by means of migration inhibition of spleen cells. Epinephrectomy was performed by operation procedures twice a week. Gluco- and mineralocorticoids were applied supplementary. -- Also other proved thiocya

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses of clade 2.3.4.4b have caused widespread mortality in wild and domestic birds globally. Colonial breeding seabirds have been severely affected across Europe, the Americas and Antarctica since 2021. Despite extensive outbreaks, most reports have been limited to morbidity and mortality, while less is known on behavioural effects of infection. We monitored six colonies of black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) throughout an outbreak during the 2023 breeding season (confirmed as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, EA-2022-BB genotype), combining fiel

H5Nx highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses pose persistent threats to poultry, wildlife, and public health. Over the past two decades, their geographic and host ranges have expanded across migratory networks whose epidemiological connectivity has become increasingly apparent through recent surveillance and genomic analyses. To elucidate these dynamics, we conduct long-term nationwide wild-bird surveillance in China, integrating active and passive monitoring. Our analyses reveal the maintenance, reassortment, and transmission of H5Nx viruses in wild birds, highlighting the value of sustaine

The brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) is a highly abundant invertebrate in the North Sea, with its life cycle stages ranging from deep offshore spawning to shallow onshore nursery areas. To overcome the long distances between these two habitats, brown shrimp are suspected to use selective tidal stream transport (STST), moving with the cyclic tide currents towards their preferred water depths. However, it is not known which stimulus actually triggers STST behavior in brown shrimp. In this work, we determined the influence of different hyperbaric pressures on STST behavior of juvenile brown shrimp.

Potential wind-energy development in the eastern Rocky Mountain foothills of British Columbia, Canada, raises concerns due to its overlap with a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) migration corridor. The Dokie 1 Wind Energy Project is the first development in this area and stands as a model for other projects in the area because of regional consistency in topographic orientation and weather patterns. We visually tracked golden eagles over three fall migration seasons (2009-2011), one pre- and two post-construction, to document eagle flight behaviour in relation to a ridge-top wind energy develop

1. The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the world's largest living reptile. It predominately inhabits freshwater and estuarine habitats, but widespread geographic distribution throughout oceanic islands of the South-east Pacific suggests that individuals undertake sizeable ocean voyages. 2. Here we show that adult C. porosus adopt behavioural strategies to utilise surface water currents during long-distance travel, enabling them to move quickly and efficiently over considerable distances. 3. We used acoustic telemetry to monitor crocodile movement throughout 63 km of river, and foun

Albendazole is a benzimidazole derivative with proven efficacy against many parasites such as intestinal helminths. Toxocariasis is one of the important parasitic diseases in humans and animals caused by Toxocara canis. It is well known that T. canis larvae migrate in paratenic hosts, including humans where it may cause visceral larva migrans. Thus, the present research was carried out using in vivo experiments with the aim of finding whether novel albendazole microparticles would be active against migrating larvae of the parasite. Albendazole-chitosan microparticles were prepared by ionotropi

Molecular mechanisms underlying the role of statins in the induction of brain plasticity and subsequent improvement of neurologic outcome after treatment of stroke have not been adequately investigated. Here, we use both in vivo and in vitro studies to investigate the potential roles of two prominent factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), in mediating brain plasticity after treatment of stroke with atorvastatin. Treatment of stroke in adult mice with atorvastatin daily for 14 days, starting at 24 hours after MCAO, shows significant impr

Huernia Sp. Nov. aff. Boleana, Apocynaceae, grows in the high mountains of southwest Saudi Arabia and is widely used as a remedy for the treatment of diabetes. The present study investigated the anti‑inflammatory, wound healing and inhibitory effects on migration of Huernia Sp. Nov. aff. Boleana. The anti‑inflammatory effect was assessed in mice using formalin‑induced edema. Wound healing effects were assessed in rats using a circular excision wound model. An in vitro 'scratch' test was used to investigate the inhibitory effects on melanoma cell (B16‑F10) migration. The anti‑inflammatory effec

OBJECTIVE: Hepatic fibrosis is characterized by the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signals participate in the activation of HSCs. We evaluated the effect of FAK-related nonkinase (FRNK) on the adhesion and migration of HSCs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hepatic fibrosis was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by means of bile duct ligation. Livers were harvested at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after the ligation; livers of sham-operated animals were harvested at 4 weeks after ligation. Histopathologic features were evaluated in liver

It is still being debated whether neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) is enhanced in response to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) injury in the adult mouse brain. Our previous studies provided evidence that MPTP induces apoptosis of migrating neuroblasts (neural progenitor cells, A cells) in the SVZ and rostral migratory stream (RMS). We investigated cellular kinetics in the adult SVZ and olfactory bulb (OB) after MPTP damage. Cells were labeled with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), and the effects of MPTP on the survival and fate of migrating and residing neuroblasts wer

Breast cancer is a common cancer in women, with a highly variable course, from inoffensive to lethal. To find a more effective strategy for its treatment, sodium valproate has been tested as an anti-cancer drug; it is the only clinically available histone deacetylase inhibitor. However, data about the effects of sodium valproate on breast cancer are insufficient in both animals and humans; studies have yielded conflicting conclusions. In particular, little is known about the association between expression of the metastasis suppressor Nm23H1 gene and breast cancer. We hypothesized that sodium v
