Adverse reactions to food or dietary hypersensitivity are frequently seen problems in companion animal medicine and may be difficult to differentiate from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dietary hypersensitivity can be divided into two subgroups: immunological and nonimmunological problems. Non-immunological problems can be subdivided into food intolerance, food poisoning, and dietary indiscretion. The immunological group can be subdivided into true food allergy (IgE mediated) and anaphylaxis (non-IgE mediated). This article gives an outline of what dietary hypersensitivity is, and more spec

Okadaic acid (OA), the main toxin responsible for diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning (DSP) has high cytotoxicity for KB cell cultures (apparent after 3 hr of contact), facilitating rapid detection in contaminated mussels. We developed a method to determine the minimal active concentration (MAC) based on direct microscopic study of toxin-induced changes in cell morphology. A high correlation was found between the MAC of tested extracts and corresponding OA concentrations in mussel hepatopancreas as measured by high performance liquid chromatography. This technique is rapid and reproducible and does

Zinc poisoning in small animals has been described in dogs, cats, birds, and ferrets, but the dog appears to be the species most often affected. Ingestion of zinc-containing metallic objects, including pennies, and zinc oxide ointments has been associated with the majority of the toxicoses. Clinical signs include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, hemolytic anemia, kidney dysfunction, and possible liver and pancreatic abnormalities. Treatments that have proven efficacious include fluid diuresis, blood transfusions as needed, general supportive care, and removal of the source of zinc. Further evalua

BACKGROUND: Mercuric chloride (HgCl2) is poisonous to humans and animals and typically damages the nervous system and other organs. Mercuric chloride exposition disclosed to initiation of oxidative stress pathway can result in a defect in male fertility and testis tissue. Synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were characterized with a diameter range minimal than 100 nm, having the effective sets of the biological matter. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of biosynthesized SeNPs, prepared by leek extract on Wistar rats' testicles and brain.
METHODS: Thirty-five Wistar male ra

Since there are a plethora of studies on cadmium toxicity and poisoning in laboratory animals and humans, we have limited this review to studies that are relevant to human health issues by focusing on carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, circulatory disease, nephrotoxicity and life expectancy. Cadmium exposure has been established to induce cancer in various tissues of laboratory animals. Contrary to early findings of the lack of genotoxicity by cadmium, recent findings of mammalian cell culture studies have revealed genotoxic effects. Furthermore, cadmium exposure at relatively low doses induces ci

Ricin is a potent toxin derived from the castor bean plant and comprises two subunits, RTA and RTB. Because of its cytotoxicity, ricin has alarmed world authorities for its potential use as a chemical weapon. Ricin also affects castor bean agribusiness, given the risk of animal and human poisoning. Over the years, many groups attempted to propose small-molecules that bind to the RTA active site, the catalytic chain. Despite such efforts, there is still no effective countermeasure against ricin poisoning. The computational study carried out in the present work renews the discussion about small-

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) have been widely used for controlling rodents in agriculture and households. It often occurs that non-target animals are poisoned by ARs. Also, the abuse of ARs has been often encountered in poisoning and suicide cases. Herein we report the determination of nine commonly used ARs by high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) with supported liquid extraction (SLE) pretreatment. The factors affecting SLE (elution solvents and pH values) were systematically tested and optimized. The application of parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) mode led to the highest sensitivit

Amphibians are known by cutaneous glands, spread over the skin, containing toxins (proteins, peptides, biogenic amines, steroidal bufadienolides, and alkaloids) used as chemical defense against predators and microbial infection. Toads are characterized by the presence of parotoid macroglands. The common toads have lately been divided into two genera: Bufo (Europe, Asia, and Africa) and Rhinella (South America). Basal Rhaebo genus is exclusively of Central America and Amazon region. Although Rhinella and Rhaebo are related, species may share differences due to the diversity of environments that

The lichen species Xanthoparmelia chlorochroa is toxic when consumed by domestic sheep, cattle, and Rocky Mountain elk. Clinical signs exhibited by poisoned animals include red urine, ataxia, and muscular weakness that rapidly progresses to recumbency. Elk are unable to recover once becoming recumbent; however, most affected cattle can recover if offered suitable feed shortly following the onset of signs. At present, the pathogenesis and specific toxin(s) are unknown. As part of an effort to elucidate the proximate toxin, a method using ultra-performance LC coupled to MS/MS with negative-ion e

The heme biosynthetic pathway is a metabolic target of alcohol and lead poisoning. To analyze the interdependence of both xenobiotics on porphyrin metabolism, male Wistar rats (n=47) were divided into four groups and were fed Lieber-DeCarli semiliquid control or alcoholic diets containing or not containing lead acetate (160 mg/liter) for 8 weeks. After this period, hematocrit values and porphyrin concentration in liver and urine were similar in all groups, indicating that the goal of inducing only mild chronic intoxication was achieved. Compared with the control group, rats poisoned only with

A commercial flea and tick product containing 9.0% fenvalerate for use in dogs and cats was suspected of causing illness. An acute toxicity study was performed in 10 dogs and 10 cats exposed to the product orally (po) and dermally at differing doses. Samples were obtained for DEET and fenvalerate analysis. Oral dosing of dogs and cats produced severe clinical illness at doses as low as 0.66% of a can (7 ounce spray can)/kg body weight. Dermal application of the product resulted in minor clinical abnormalities in dogs. Oral exposure at 0.5% can/kg body weight resulted in severe illness, and der

Clostridium perfringens is an important human and animal pathogen that is the primary causative agent of necrotizing enteritis and enterotoxemia in many types of animals; it causes traumatic gas gangrene in humans and animals and is associated with cases of food poisoning in humans. C. perfringens produces a variety of toxins as well as many enzymes, including three sialidases, NanH, NanI, and NanJ. Sialidases could be important virulence factors that promote the pathogenesis of C. perfringens. Among them, NanI promotes the colonization of C. perfringens in the intestinal tract and enhances th

Carbon tetrachloride is a well-studied hepatotropic poison. Animal models of exposure to carbon tetrachloride resemble acute liver damage in humans. This paper presents the study of the expression of genes related to cell cycle control, apoptosis, and oxidative stress in a model of carbon tetrachloride-induced toxic hepatitis in rats. White mongrel male rats were injected with a 50% oil solution of carbon tetrachloride at a dose of 0.125-4.000 g/kg (experimental group) or olive oil (control group). The animals were decapitated 24 and 72 h after the administration of carbon tetrachloride, and t

Nausea and vomiting are ubiquitous as drug side effects and symptoms of disease; however, the systems that determine these responses are arguably designed for protection against food poisoning occurring at the level of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This basic biological pathway using GI vagal afferent communication to the brain is not well understood. Part of this lack of insight appears to be related to current experimental approaches, such as the use of experimental drugs, including systemic chemotherapy and brain penetrant agents, which activate parts of the nausea and vomiting system in
