Anthelmintic treatment of rural Bangladeshi children: effect on host physiology, growth, and biochemical status.

BACKGROUND: The effect of helminth infestation on the nutrition, growth, and physiology of the host is still poorly understood. Anthelmintic treatment of children in developing countries has had varying success in terms of growth improvements. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of regular deworming on child growth, physiology, and biochemical status. DESIGN: The study was a 12-mo longitudinal intervention in 123 Bangladeshi children aged 2-5 y. Treatment (mebendazole) or placebo tablets were administered every 2 mo for 8 mo and again at 12 mo. Weight, height, mid

Cephaibols, new peptaibol antibiotics with anthelmintic properties from Acremonium tubakii DSM 12774.

Two groups of new peptaibol-type antibiotics termed cephaibols have been isolated from the fungus Acremonium tubakii, DSM 12774. These 16- or 17-unit straight-chain peptides, whose structures were characterized by amino acid analyses, 2-D NMR experiments, and by mass spectrometric sequencing, have a high content of the unusual amino acids aminoisobutyric acid and isovaline. The principal constituent of the novel peptaibol mixture is cephaibol A, which is formed in abundance in cultures of the wild strain. The striking biological property of cephaibol A is its pronounced anthelmintic action and

Anthelmintic efficacy of milbemycin D against Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma tubaeforme in domestic cats.

Anthelmintic efficacy of milbemycin D was evaluated against Toxocara cati and Ancylostoma tubaeforme in domestic cats. Twelve cats naturally infected with each nematode species were allocated among 2 groups of 6 animals each, and milbemycin D was orally administered to the 2 groups of cats in doses of 0.05 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg body weight, respectively. In all the cats infected with T. cati, fecal egg counts decreased followed by their disappearance from the feces and 2-35 worms were excreted into the feces after the medication in both doses of 0.05 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg. At postmortem of these m

Relationship of the prevalence of swine helminths to management practices and anthelmintic treatment in Danish sow herds.

During 1982-1984, the occurrence of helminths in 66 sow herds in Denmark was examined by means of faecal samples. The correlations between the prevalences of Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum spp. and management practices were analysed for fatteners and sows, respectively, resulting in four multivariate models. The helminth prevalences were in general low in large herds, specific pathogen-free (SPF) herds and herds with low weaning age. The multivariate analyses showed that only the two latter correlations were significant. The helminth prevalences of the fatteners were not correlated with anth

A study of the effectiveness of mebendazole and pyrantel pamoate as a combination anthelmintic in Papua New Guinean children.

A mixture of 150 mg mebendazole and 30mg pyrantel pamoate was given on 3 consecutive or near-consecutive days to 70 children infected with one or more of Necator americanus, Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis, S. fuelleborni-like and Trichuris trichiura. This treatment had an efficacy of 95 per cent for N. americanus infections, 100 per cent for A. lumbricoides, 57 per cent for Strongyloides spp., and 75 per cent for T. trichiura. The results indicate that the treatment given is effective against the infections of N. americanus and A. lumbricoides but is only partially effective f

Anthelmintic effect of levamisole, ivermectin, albendazole and fenbendazole on larval Toxocara canis infection in mice.

The anthelmintic effects of levamisole (100-50 mg kg-1 live bodyweight), ivermectin (2 mg kg-1 bodyweight), albendazole and fenbendazole (both 100 mg kg-1 bodyweight), were tested against second stage Toxocara canis larvae in mice. Anthelmintic treatment on days 2 to 7 after infection inclusive resulted in significant (P less than 0.05) retention of larvae in the liver, and fewer larvae migrated subsequently to the brain and the musculature of treated mice compared to untreated controls. Most of the larvae retained in the liver subsequently died there and were not recoverable by day 35 after i

The effect of anthelmintic treatment and other management factors on the incidence of breech strike in Merino sheep.

Repeated scouring and soiling of the breech region with faeces rendered mulesed, Merino sheep susceptible to breech strike. Anthelmintic treatment of ewes before and after lambing and of lambs 6 to 8 weeks old reduced intestinal trichostrongylosis, scouring and consequent breech strike. Wether lambs tended to be more susceptible than ewe lambs and sheep grazing long pastures were struck more frequently than those on short pastures.

Simulated Targeted Anthelmintic Treatment Maintains Dung Removal but Not Dung-Inhabiting Insect Communities.

The intensive use of antiparasitic treatments, such as macrocyclic lactones, is known to affect non-target dung-inhabiting insects, leading to reduced community functioning and ecosystem services. We describe the development of a spatially explicit simulation to assess the effects of the treatment of different proportions of a livestock herd with anthelmintics, a strategy known as targeted selective treatment. We simulated the treatment of a varying proportion of a livestock herd with antiparasitics, and the effects inflicted on three dung-inhabiting insect guilds (flies, endocoprids and parac…

The use of pumpkin seeds as an alternative anthelmintic to reduce parasite burden in naturally infected lambs.

Parasite control continues to be an important management consideration for small ruminant producers worldwide because of the increased cost associated with anthelmintic treatment and the growing risk of parasite resistance to commercially available anthelmintics. As an alternative, pumpkin seeds (PS) have demonstrated anthelmintic properties in vitro that may be applied on-farm to control parasitic infection. Therefore, the objective of these experiments was to evaluate lamb growth and monitor parasite burden in lambs offered PS supplemented growing diets by measuring lamb body weight (BW), dr…

Halogenation of neolignan scaffolds reveals stage-specific anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus.

Gastrointestinal nematodes, including Haemonchus contortus, represent a major constraint to livestock production globally, and the increasing prevalence of anthelmintic resistance necessitates the discovery of new chemotypes. Natural products provide a rich and underexplored source of bioactive scaffolds for anthelmintic development. However, there remains a need to systematically optimise such scaffolds to define structure-activity relationships in whole-organism systems. Here, we investigated neolignan compounds from the fruits of Styrax suberifolius and assessed the impact of halogenation o

Dung-applied anthelmintic drug moxidectin alters free-living soil nematode communities.

Moxidectin (MOX) belongs to the macrocyclic lactones, a class of anthelmintic drugs widely used in livestock that can enter the soil environment and persist by binding to soil organic matter. While MOX is effective against gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes, its potential impact on free-living soil nematodes remains largely unexplored. In a controlled 8-week pot experiment, we examined how MOX, applied via sheep dung, affects free-living soil nematode communities and related ecological indices of soil condition. The effects of increasing MOX dosages (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/pot) on nematode abund

Terpenic compounds possess anthelmintic and immunomodulatory properties with potential for controlling equine cyathostomin infections.

The emergence of anthelmintic-resistant parasite isolates necessitates alternative control strategies. The use of dietary additives with anti-parasitic or immunomodulatory activities has been proposed as a solution, but whether such additives can simultaneously exert dual bioactivities within this context has rarely been explored. Here, we evaluated whether selected terpenes could exert dual bioactivities (anti-parasitic and immunomodulatory) with a view to their use as food additives that can limit strongyle infections in horses. In vitro tests with cyathostomin larval development, larval mig
