OBJECTIVES: Pivmecillinam, the oral version of mecillinam, represents one of the major recommended and used antibiotics for empiric and targeted treatment of urinary tract infections in primary care in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Mecillinam resistant mutants in Escherichia coli develop easily in vitro, but their fitness cost has been shown to be high.

Escherichia coli is the most studied among those bacteria causing urinary tract infections. Omadacycline is an aminomethylcycline with in vitro activity against many gram-negative pathogens. Omadacycline and comparators were tested against Enterobacteriaceae from urinary tract infections (UTIs) selected from a 2014 global surveillance program and compared to results of isolates from 2010 surveillance.
