Deciphering caudal embryonic defects: embryological analysis and reviewing literature data.

BACKGROUND: A number of syndromes÷associations involving the caudal region have been described in the literature. Each of them is characterized by a set of morphological features. Reports on difficulties in delineation and an ever-increasing constellation of defects in recent past call for a comprehensive study into the morphologic presentations and pathogenesis of caudal embryonic defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present article describes a case of the OEIS complex--a combination of omphalocele, exstrophy of bladder, imperforate anus and spinal defects. Literature search was performed and

[A neonate without anus].

A male neonate presented with an anal atresia and a rectoperineal fistula. The fistula was dilated which made a temporary colostomy unnecessary. A posterior sagittal anorectoplasty was conducted successfully.

Anorectal atresia treated with non-continent pull through and artificial bowel sphincter: a case report.

Anorectal atresia, which is classified as a low anorectal malformation, is characterised by the absence of the anal verge and by variable rectal atresia. In some cases, which have been classified as rectal agenesis, the atresia is associated with the absence of the internal sphincter. The therapeutic options are definitely surgical, aiming to relieve the bowel occlusion and to restore faecal continence by lowering the cul-de-sac to the perineum. We present the case of an adult patient with congenital rectal agenesis, double fistula (cul-de-sac-urethra and cul-de-sac-perineum) and caecostomy si

Surgical approaches to pediatric defecatory disorders.

Defecation is one of the most basic of human activities. Problems with evacuation of feces have plagued people since the beginning of time. In modern society, defecatory disorders are the source of embarrassment, discomfort, and stress. Society's lack of openness on this subject forces many people to endure their affliction silently. Nevertheless, although these conditions consume significant medical resources, little research has been done on their causes and treatment. This review summarizes recent developments in surgical treatment of children with these disorders, either in the ability to

Rectoperineal fistula in newborn boys.

Three newborn boys presented with features suggestive of classic low anorectal abnormality. However, during surgery they were found to have an intermediate anorectal abnormality and a rectoperineal fistula rather than an anocutaneous fistula. The surgical treatment of these infants is discussed.

Case report: the antenatal ultrasound diagnosis of megalourethra.

The antenatal ultrasound findings in a fetus which postnatally had fusiform megalourethra, rectal agenesis, recto-vesical fistula and unilateral renal hypoplasia are described. At 16 weeks gestation a cystic area was seen arising from the perineum. It later became evident that this was the urethra. Initially, an echogenic mass was noted in the pelvis, but by the second trimester, fluid-filled loops of bowel were evident. This combination of developmental abnormalities though rare is well defined. Only one previously recorded case has been suspected antenatally.

Abdomino-extended sacroperineal approach in high-type anorectal malformation--and a new operative method.

From 1971 onwards we have been examining the anatomy and histology of sphincter components in patients with several anorectal malformation who died of associated anomalies. These histological studies demonstrated that not only puborectal muscle but also the superficial and deep external sphincters exist, even in the high type anomalies, and that the mass of external sphincter is located above the anal dimple. Moreover, the inner circular muscle of rectum is thickened at the level of the closest part of the fistula. Based on our histological studies, we devised our new operation to use all the

A newborn with a covered anus complicated by two concomitant unique fistulas.

A newborn having a covered anus and two fistulas, one ano-urethral and one penile urethro-cutaneous, is presented. In spite of the resemblance of this ano-urethral fistula to an "H-type" ano-urethral fistula, which is thought to result from the failure of the division of the cloaca in the embryological period, three abnormalities seen in this case were thought to be the result of a serial event which occurred in the more distal part, the anal and the genital folds, during the embryological period.

Clinically diverse and perinatally lethal syndromes with urorectal septum malformation sequence.

Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSMS) is characterized by a spectrum of anomalies of the urogenital system, hindgut and perineum. It is presumed to be a constellation of an embryonic defect. Herein, we analyzed the clinically diverse syndromes associated with URSMS in our perinatal evaluation unit. We reviewed fetuses with URSMS in referrals for perinatal autopsy over a period of 3 years. Chromosomal microarray and genome sequencing were performed whenever feasible. Literature was reviewed for syndromes or malformations with URSMS. We ascertained URSMS in 12 of the 215 (5%) fetuses. N

Anorectal malformation coexisting with Hirschsprung's disease: a report of two patients.

Anorectal Malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung's Disease (HD) are common causes of congenital intestinal obstruction in children. Simultaneous occurrence of both conditions is rare. Few have been reported in Europe and Asia, but we have no knowledge so far of such report from Nigeria. We present two patients managed in our centre to highlight the challenges of management of this uncommon coexistence. The first patient was a 5-year-old girl who was referred to us with intestinal obstructive symptoms despite an apparently adequate sized ectopic anus. She had colostomy and rectal biopsy, which con
