An experimental study of "annular scotoma" was conducted. Variations in prismatic effects at the boundary of the lens with respect to incidence were evaluated with the aid of a laser beam. The use of an arc-perimeter and an artificial aphakic eye allowed reconstruction of light beam paths from the outside to the inside of the eye. The results obtained enabled a more rigorous analysis of this optical phenomenon. During intracapsular lens extraction the extreme retinal periphery is subjected to zonula-mediated traction and possible damage to the retinal vessels. The vascular pattern at the ora serrata was studied with special reference to the frequency and distribution of vessels positioned adjacent to the ora structures. The possible role of leakage from such vessels in vitreo-retinal pathology of the aphakic eye is discussed.

PURPOSE: To compare intra- and postoperative results of sutureless scleral fixated Carlevale intraocular lens (IOL) with iris fixated Artisan IOL.

PURPOSE: To report the myopic shift at 5 years of age after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for infants enrolled in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study (IATS).
