Inter-rater reliability during live pediatric formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in a French University.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In France, OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) have recently been incorporated as an official assessm … two parts: "clinical skills" and "general skills," assessing the student's behavior and relational aptitudes. Evaluation scales were dichotomous for all items. RESULTS: About 206 fifth-year medical students participated in four distinct OSCE sessions. A total of 411 stations were evaluated by 20 pairs of assessors, resulting in 822 different scores. The …

The reliability and diagnostic value of radiographic criteria in sagittal spine deformities: comparison of the vertebral wedge ratio to the segmental cobb angle.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, radiographic cohort study. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the radiographic reliability and diagnostic value of the vertebral wedge ratio (WR) to the more segmental Cobb angle (CA) regarding sagittal spine deformities. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The use of the CA has been used to assist in the radiographic diagnosis of various sagittal spine deformities. However, the reliability and diagnostic aptitude of the CA remains speculative and may not be as receptive to individual variations of vertebral integrity in sagittal spine deformities. METHODS: Sixty patients …

A dissociation between linguistic and communicative abilities in the human brain.

Although language is an effective vehicle for communication, it is unclear how linguistic and communicative abilities relate to each other. Some researchers have argued that communicative message generation involves perspective taking (mentalizing), and-crucially-that mentalizing depends on language. We employed a verbal communication paradigm to directly test whether the generation of a communicative action relies on mentalizing and whether the cerebral bases of communicative message generation are distinct from parts of cortex sensitive to linguistic variables. We found that dorsomedial pref

Impact of SMART Board technology: an investigation of sight word reading and observational learning.

The effects of SMART Board technology, an interactive electronic whiteboard, and a 3s constant time delay (CTD) procedure was evaluated for teaching sight word reading to students with moderate intellectual disabilties within a small group arrangment. A multiple probe design across three word sets and replicated with three students was used to evaluate the effectiveness of SMART Board technology on: (a) reading target grocery words; (b) matching grocery item photos to target grocery words; (c) reading other students' target grocery words through observational learning; and (d) matching grocery

Perceived control: how is it related to daily occupation in patients with mental illness living in the community?

Perceived control is of significance in occupational therapy, as revealed in empirical research and suggested in practice models. This study investigated the relationship between perceived control and occupational performance in persons with long-term mental illness. The 177 participants were assessed regarding perceived control (locus of control and self-mastery) and occupational performance (activity level and satisfaction with daily occupations). Subgroups with respect to diagnosis and having gainful employment or not were also explored concerning the targeted association. The results indic

Saving lives in our homes: Qualitative evaluation of a tenant overdose response program in supportive, single-room occupancy (SRO) housing.

BACKGROUND: People using opioids alone in private settings are at elevated risk of dying in the event of an overdose. In San Francisco, single room occupancy (SRO) tenants are 19 times more likely to die of overdose than non-SRO residents. The "SRO Project" pilot aimed to reduce fatal overdoses in SROs by recruiting and training tenants to distribute naloxone and provide overdose education in their buildings. We explore the implementation and program impacts of the SRO Project pilot in two permanent supportive housing SROs. METHODS: We conducted eight months of ethnographic fieldwork (May 202

Digit ratio and faculty membership: implications for the relationship between prenatal testosterone and academia.

Digit ratio (length of index finger divided by length of ring finger) is an index of exposure to prenatal testosterone. Prenatal testosterone slows the growth rate of the left side of the brain while enhancing growth of the right side. Right hemisphere processing is associated with better visual-spatial and mathematical abilities, as is digit ratio. Thus, traditional sex differences in visual-spatial and mathematical abilities can be attributed to differences in exposure to prenatal testosterone, indexed by a sex dimorphic pattern in digit ratio (female=1.00, male=0.98 for UK samples). Additio

Memory abilities in children with subtypes of dyscalculia.

This study examines (a) mathematical skills of 2 subgroups of children with developmental dyscalculia (DD)--1 group with DD only and a second group with DD plus reading disorders (RDD)-and (b) analyzes the memory skills of both groups of children. Fifty 11- and 12-year-old children were selected from public schools in Guadalajara, Mexico. Seventeen children had DD only, 13 had RDD, and 20 were normal controls. Testing included 10 calculation and 6 memory subtests taken from the Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil (Matute, Rosselli, Ardila, and Ostrosky, in press). Results indicated that child

Occupational abilities and performance scale--reliability-validity assessment factor analysis.

BACKGROUND: This article presents a study of the Occupational Abilities and Performance Scale (OAPS), developed for administration to schizophrenic patients. The reliability and validity of the OAPS has been evaluated. METHOD: A total of 174 schizophrenic patients who participated in the Psychosocial and Vocational Rehabilitation Unit (PVRU) of the University Mental Health Research Institute (UMHRI) in Athens were assessed. The OAPS is conducted at entry and after 18 months, when the client has completed training. RESULTS: The results of the reliability analysis showed very good internal con

Mnemonic anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease: a test of Agnew and Morris (1998).

Agnew and Morris [Agnew, S. K. & Morris, R. G. (1998). The heterogeneity of anosognosia for memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease: A review of the literature and a proposed model. Aging and Mental Health, 2, 9-15] model of awareness for memory functioning has attempted to account for the variance of anosognosia exhibited within the Alzheimer's disease (AD) population. There has been tentative evidence to suggest that the mnemonic anosognosia sub-type, proposed by this model, is common within the early stages of AD. However, this study is the first directly to test the model. Eighteen older

Development of auditory event-related potentials in young children and relations to word-level reading abilities at age 8 years.

BACKGROUND: Reverse Chance fractures (RCFs) of the ankylosed thoracolumbar spine present significant therapeutic challenges. The preexisting frailty of these patients, who are typically older individuals with medical morbidities, often outweighs the biomechanical benefit of surgical fixation using spinal instrumentation. We propose that such injuries without displacement or fractures of the posterior elements are reasonable candidates for standalone percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) as we have described in our earlier report of 3 cases. To further determine the indications and limitations of s

Case report: Angelman syndrome in an individual with a small SMC(15) and paternal uniparental disomy: a case report with reference to the assessment of cognitive functioning and autistic symptomatology.

The case of a 15-year-old male with Angelman syndrome, paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 15, and a small supernumerary marker chromosome is discussed. Assessment of cognitive functioning revealed an uneven profile of ability across different domains; in particular, receptive language ability was found to be superior to expressive language ability, whilst both gross and fine motor skills were found to be relatively well developed. Assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule showed very little evidence of autistic symptomatology. The patient showed an interest in social i

Visuo-spatial ability in individuals with Down syndrome: is it really a strength?

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with extreme difficulty in verbal skills and relatively better visuo-spatial skills. Indeed, visuo-spatial ability is often considered a strength in DS. However, it is not clear whether this strength is only relative to the poor verbal skills, or, more impressively, relative to cognitive ability in general. To answer this question, we conducted an extensive literature review of studies on visuo-spatial abilities in people with Down syndrome from January 1987 to May 2013. Based on a general taxonomy of spatial abilities patterned after Lohman, Pellegrino, Aldert

An investigation of visual contour integration ability in relation to writing performance in primary school students.

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

Supporting more able students on the autism spectrum: college and beyond.

In the 1990's a surge of children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and are now approaching college age. Through early diagnosis and intervention many of these children are now able to consider post secondary education. However, these students will need specific interventions and supports in order to be successful. This article reviews the nosology of ASDs, the legal basis for providing accommodations to students on the autism spectrum, and the incidence and prevalence of ASDs. The authors provide specific recommendations regarding the academic, independent living, social, v

Male prevalence for reading disability is found in a large sample of black and white children free from ascertainment bias.

Male vulnerability to neurodevelopmental disorders remains controversial. For one disorder, reading disability, this sex bias has been interpreted as an artifact of referral bias. We investigated sex differences for the incidence of reading disability within a large prospective sample of White (N = 16,910) and Black (N = 15,313) children derived from the National Collaborative Perinatal Project (NCPP). Children were classified as having either moderate or severe reading disability when they had reading scores lower than 1.5 or 2.0 standard errors of prediction, respectively, given their age an

Enteric neurospheres retain the capacity to assemble neural networks with motile and metamorphic gliocytes and ganglia.

BACKGROUND: Neurosphere medium (NSM) and self-renewal medium (SRM) were widely used to isolate enteric neural stem cells (ENSCs) in the form of neurospheres. ENSCs or their neurosphere forms were neurogenic and gliogenic, but the compelling evidence for their capacity of assembling enteric neural networks remained lacking, raising the question of their aptitude for rebuilding the enteric nervous system (ENS) in ENSC therapeutics. It prompted us to explore an effective culture protocol or strategy for assembling ENS networks, which might also be employed as an in vitro model to simplify the bio…
