Arachnoid cysts are congenital benign intracranial collections of cerebrospinal fluid. Most arachnoid cysts are small and asymptomatic. They are usually located in the temporal fossa. Classically described complications result from compression of adjacent structures and include neurologic involvement, headaches and seizures. There are few cases of arachnoid cysts with ophthalmic manifestations reported in the literature. We describe two pediatric cases of arachnoid cyst with ocular complications. A 12-month-old girl with a history of acquired nystagmus and enlarged head circumference was refer

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Intramedullary spinal arachnoid cysts are considered to be very rare, and only 11 cases have been reported previously. Development of such a cyst in association with marked cervical spondylosis has not been reported until recently.
PURPOSE: Brief review of reported cases and debate on likely treatment strategy when such a cyst is associated with symptomatic spondylosis.
STUDY DESIGN: To report the first example of a cervicothoracic intramedullary arachnoid cyst along with a symptomatic cervical spondylosis.
METHODS: Evaluation of quadriparesis in a 58-year-old female res

Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst (SEDAC) is a cyst in the spinal canal that protrudes into the epidural space from a defect in the dura mater. Most cases are sporadic; however, three familial SEDAC cases have been reported, suggesting genetic etiological factors. All familial cases are associated with lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS), whose causal gene is FOXC2. However, FOXC2 mutation analysis has been performed in only 1 family, and no mutation analysis has been performed on sporadic (non-familial) SEDACs. We recruited 17 SEDAC subjects consisting of 2 familial and 7 sporadic cases and

The authors describe a case of communicating hydrocephalus accompanied by an arachnoid cyst in an aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage. A 69-year-old female was referred to our clinic due to the sudden onset of a headache. A head computed tomography scan demonstrated an arachnoid cyst in the right middle fossa with a mass effect and diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage. Digital subtraction angiography then revealed a left internal carotid-posterior communicating artery aneurysm. The neck of the aneurysm was clipped successfully and the post-operative period was uneventful. However, two months after d

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Arachnoid cysts have not been reported to be located within the brain parenchyma. We present a case of an arachnoid cyst that was contained entirely within the right frontal lobe devoid of communication with the subarachnoid space and ventricle.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of progressive headache and nausea. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imagining scans showed a well-defined, nonenhancing mass measuring 5 × 5 × 3.5 cm in the right frontal lobe. The mass appeared to be contained entirely within the brain pa

Recognizing syndromes which mimic ALS is crucial both to avoid giving this diagnosis erroneously and since there may be appropriate treatments. We report a 63-year-old woman diagnosed with possible ALS five years ago based on upper and lower motor neuron signs with typical electrophysiology and normal cranial MRI. At reassessment, spinal MRI revealed a cervicothoracic cyst with cord compression that was successfully treated neurosurgically. Histopathology confirmed an arachnoid origin as suspected from MRI. Spinal cysts may mimic ALS and need to be thoroughly excluded by appropriate imaging.

Anaesthesia for parturient patients with dwarfism is an uncommon problem faced by anaesthesiologists. There is an ongoing debate regarding general versus regional anaesthesia in these cases. In many centers there is lack of facilities for epidural or continuous epidural anaesthesia. A primiparous dwarf woman of 27 years old having 124 cm height and 37 kg weight was admitted in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for elective cesarean section due to cephalopelvic disproportion. She was diagnosed as a case of pituitary dwarf previously on antenatal checkup depending on both clinical and endocrin

Mucocoeles usually involve the frontal sinus and can extend to the orbit or intracranially. In this case symptoms and radiological findings were typical of a left frontal mucocoele with intracranial extension. Intraoperative findings were compatible with a left frontal mucocoele communicating with an arachnoid cyst of the anterior cranial fossa.

Usual locations of arachnoid cyst are the middle cranial fossa in 50-60%, cerebellopontine angle (10%) and suprasellar area (10%). Most of these malformations are asymptomatic. Premedullar arachnoid cysts are extremely rare. All previous cases reported were operated. We report a case of an asymptomatic giant craniocervical junction arachnoid cyst with a follow up of five years. In 2002, an adolescent consulted for persistent cervical pain. Encephalic MR showed a giant ventral craniocervical junction arachnoid cyst. Neurologic examination was normal. Conservative treatment was decided with a cl

BACKGROUND: Primary arachnoid cysts are benign developmental lesions of arachnoid mater. Arachnoid cysts may be detected due to various neurological symptoms, or they may be encountered as incidental findings of neuroimaging. Consequently, a significant share of the patients seems asymptomatic. There are diverging opinions about the clinical importance of cyst sizes, cyst location and degree of volume reduction after surgery, hence contributing to controversies regarding indications for surgical treatment. We present the first study assessing internationally established parameters of quality o

A 34-year-old male diagnosed of an intracranial arachnoid cyst arising in the left-sided temporal-parietal area, by computed tomography (CT), underwent evaluation by means of MEG. Biomagnetic waveform recordings were obtained from the target area and the Fourier analysis of these measurements was carried out. External magnetic stimulation in the order of pico Tesla was applied with proper field characteristics (intensity: 1-7.5 pT, frequency: 8-13 Hz), which were obtained prior to the application and the emitted MEG activity was recorded again. The cortical area adjacent to the borders of the

INTRODUCTION: Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are an uncommon cause of neural compression in children. Even more uncommon is the association of such cysts with spina bifida occulta.
MATERIAL: Two girls, 12 and 8-years-old, presented with left leg pain, deteriorating gait, clinical signs of left L5 and S1 root compression, without bladder or bowel symptoms. The first patient had left foot drop. The second patient had muscle wasting and smaller left foot with pes cavus. Radiographs showed spina bifida occulta of S1 in both. MRI revealed an extradural cyst at the S1 level, indenting the thecal

The authors investigated cognition in patients with arachnoid cysts by assessing 55 patients and 32 control subjects on four different cognitive tests preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. The patients improved their performance from preoperative to postoperative testing, whereas the control subjects did not show a similar improvement.

Cholesterol granuloma and cholesteatoma are the two most common destructive lesions of the petrous apex. Arachnoid cyst is much less common. These three expansile lesions are often indistinguishable on clinical grounds. Accurate pre-operative radiological diagnosis on computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging is important in order to plan the appropriate treatment. Pre-operative radiological differential diagnosis between primary cholesteatoma of petrous apex and a intrapetrous arachnoid cyst remains a significant problem. The following aspects need evaluation for recognition of

CASE REPORT: We present a case of a posttraumatic intradiploic arachnoid cyst associated with hydrocephalus in a 16-year-old boy. The diagnosis was missed 2 years previously, when an MRI following a transient gait disturbance failed to show the intradiploic extension of the cyst. He presented to us with hydrocephalus and a CT scan clearly identified the intradiploic position of the cyst.
OUTCOME: A fenestration between the lateral ventricle and the cyst with aqueductoplasty and ETV were performed with good results.

Arachnoid cysts constitute 1% of all intracranial space-occupying lesions. In the posterior fossa, they typically produce vague, nonspecific symptoms. However, a subset of these lesions can produce signs and symptoms indistinguishable from those of Meniere's disease. We discuss the clinical and laboratory features of 2 cases of posterior fossa arachnoid cysts mimicking Meniere's disease as well as the substantial resolution of symptoms in 1 patient after cysto-peritoneal shunt. Posterior fossa arachnoid cyst must be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with signs and

INTRODUCTION: Subdural hygroma is a known complication of Sylvian fissure arachnoid cysts (SACs). However, most of the data in the literature refer to spontaneous or posttraumatic occurrence of subdural hygromas, regarded as either a favorable or an unfavorable event. Little is known about this phenomenon as a consequence of the surgical management of SACs. The present study was carried out to evaluate the significance of postoperative subdural hygromas in children with temporal arachnoid cysts, who have been treated with craniotomy and wide marsupialization of the cystic membrane.

We report a 56-year-old man, with atypical presentation of an extradural hematoma caused by head injury after a fall. The presence of a temporal arachnoid cyst on the grounds of temporal lobe agenesis altered the clinical image of this man, causing only mild symptoms where an otherwise acute neurologic deterioration would be expected in the case of an epidural hematoma of such extent. The hematoma was evacuated through a left pterional craniotomy and a tear in the middle meningeal vein was recognized as the source of bleeding. Postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged

INTRODUCTION: The case of a 38-year old man with a histologically benign choroid plexus papilloma arising within the fourth ventricle with en plaque growth around the brain stem and medulla is described in detail. Up to this point this particular growth pattern has not been published and is a rare presentation for this tumour.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient presented with a 1.5 year history of headache, nausea, and vomiting in the morning. Additional symptoms like blurred vision and gait ataxia lead to hospital admission. MRI demonstrated a homogeneously contrast-enhancing tumour complete
