In 1951, Max Theiler of the Rockefeller Foundation received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of an effective vaccine against yellow fever--a discovery first reported in the JEM 70 years ago. This was the first, and so far the only, Nobel Prize given for the development of a virus vaccine. Recently released Nobel archives now reveal how the advances in the yellow fever vaccine field were evaluated more than 50 years ago, and how this led to a prize for Max Theiler.

To study about and reflect on the disease is to highlight the ways of seeing and saying what can a body and its power to be affected before fingerprints or traces that degrade it. This article exposes epistemological research on social representations brackets (where register know doctor) disease from the registry of Clinical Dermatology in the second half of the 19th century. This is resorted to an analysis of medical photographs preserved in archives of Colombia and Spain taking as discursive forms of seeing and saying the disease who have disfiguring effects in the body.

The purpose of this study is to examine male and female sexual dysfunctions present in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. The Journal of Sex Research, the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy, and the Archives of Sexual Behavior also are briefly discussed. The types of dysfunctions investigated include female orgasmic disorder, female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile disorder, and premature ejaculation. The article by Markel in the new Historical Perspectives of Pediatrics section of the ARCHIVES brings back a flood of memories, as I belong to the generation of pediatricians who actually used tank respirators in treating patients with poliomyelitis. In 1949, the city of Baltimore, Md, closed its contagious disease hospital (Sydenham), which served all of Maryland, and transferred its function to the Baltimore City Hospitals. The reasoning, in addition to a very low occupancy rate at Sydenham, was that the only contagious disease then likely ever to occur in epidemic form was poliomyelitis.

Digitizing large histopathology archives requires processing millions of scanned whole-slide images that must be validated rapidly. Automated organ-of-origin classification can accelerate quality control and enable early detection of mislabeled specimens. The study presents an anti-vaccination action in the 19th century involving both scientific and political motivation. The research is based on an unpublished archive, namely the registries of the British Executive Police during the massive vaccination campaign in Corfu, the capital of the British possession in the Ionian Islands-Greece (1815-1864), after the smallpox outbreak of 1852. The archival material provides information about the number of vaccinated people, namely their sex, age, nationality, the year of the previous vaccination, along with the last year when a citizen "had smallpox".

We report an archival temporal bone case from the Otopathology Archives at Johns Hopkins of a man with progressive distal-predominant weakness, sensory loss, areflexia, and bilateral pes cavus, with clinicopathologic features suggestive of a chronic demyelinating peripheral neuropathy. In 1957, British-born R Bruce Sloane became the founding head of a Canadian academic department of psychiatry in a city that had already been served by a busy asylum for more than a century. He plunged into the work with enthusiasm, but encountered blatant opposition and skepticism, prompting his departure. He went on to conduct research in the United States. Archives and oral testimony reveal the attitudes thwarting Sloane's plans to improve teaching, research, and service-attitudes that may typify a general hostility toward psychiatry in other centers at that time.
