PURPOSE: The prevalence of myopia is increasing globally, putting individuals at risk of myopia-associated visual impairment. Low-dose atropine eye drops have been found to safely reduce the risk of progression from myopia to higher levels of myopia and pathological states. In New Zealand, school children have an eye check at age 11. The main therapeutic basis for a case of organophosphate poisoning is a combination therapy which includes atropine as an anticholinergic drug and pralidoxime. If the poisoning is severe, a high dose of this combination of medicines may be needed, but this may cause serious side effects: paralytic ileus or even megacolon; however, these gastrointestinal events are very rare. Here, we report a case of organophosphate poisoning where atropine therapy was given and led to drug-associated toxic megacolon.

The toxicity of a combination of isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate (sarin; GB) and cyclohexyl methylphosphonofluoridate (GF) and the efficacy of various oxime reactivators in combination with atropine against the combined GB/GF challenge were evaluated in mice. Atropine autoinjectors are issued to aviators for use in the event of organophosphate poisoning on the battlefield. This investigation assessed the effects of unchallenged 2 mg and 4 mg doses on flight performance, vision, tracking, cognitive performance, and electroencephalograms of 12 Army aviators. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of gastrin and cholecystokinin in the cephalic phase of gastrin release and gastric and pancreatic secretion in conscious dogs. The results of atropine treatment in 506 cases of severe organic phosphorus pesticide intoxication are reported. Among the variables which might effect the results of treatment, the average dosage of atropine was related intimately to the prognosis (standard coefficient of regression bi = 0.4702, P less than 0.01). The inhibition by atropine of cholinesterase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been studied in parallel with the membrane bound acetylcholinesterase from rat red cells. Acetylcholinesterase of rat red cells, like other animal cholinesterases, was competitively inhibited while the cholinesterase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa was partially non competitively inhibited by atropine. These results clearly indicated a different behavior of cholinesterase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa in comparison with the enzyme of Pseudomonas fluorescens and other animal cholinesterases.
