The contribution of polysyllabic words in clinical decision making about children's speech.

Poor polysyllabic word (PSW) production seems to mark paediatric speech impairment as well as impairment in language, literacy and phonological processing. As impairment in these domains may only manifest in PSWs, PSW production may provide unique information that is often excluded from clinical decision making because insufficient PSWs are included in speech tests. A 5-stage model of PSW acquisition is described. The model, grounded in optimality theory, expresses a reciprocal relationship between the relaxation of markedness constraints and the contraction of faithfulness constraints from 12

Audio-vocal system regulation in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Do children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) respond similarly to perturbations in auditory feedback as typically developing (TD) children? Presentation of pitch-shifted voice auditory feedback to vocalizing participants reveals a close coupling between the processing of auditory feedback and vocal motor control. This paradigm was used to test the hypothesis that abnormalities in the audio-vocal system would negatively impact ASD compensatory responses to perturbed auditory feedback. Voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) was measured while children produced an /a/ sound into a microphone. The

Phonological processing skills of adolescents with residual speech sound errors.

PURPOSE: Research has shown that young children with speech sound disorders may have weaknesses in phonological processing. However, such skills have not been thoroughly examined in adolescents with residual speech sound errors. Therefore, this study compared the phonological processing abilities of adolescents with residual speech sound errors to those of normally speaking peers. METHOD: Two nonword repetition tasks, multisyllabic word repetition, spoonerisms, phoneme reversals, and an elision task were used to compare the phonological processing skills of 10-14-year-olds with residual speec

Speech and Nonspeech Parameters in the Clinical Assessment of Dysarthria: A Dimensional Analysis.

Nonspeech (or paraspeech) parameters are widely used in clinical assessment of speech impairment in persons with dysarthria (PWD). Virtually every standard clinical instrument used in dysarthria diagnostics includes nonspeech parameters, often in considerable numbers. While theoretical considerations have challenged the validity of these measures as markers of speech impairment, only a few studies have directly examined their relationship to speech parameters on a broader scale. This study was designed to investigate how nonspeech parameters commonly used in clinical dysarthria assessment rela

Age-related hearing loss: prevention of threshold declines, cell loss and apoptosis in spiral ganglion neurons.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) -presbycusis - is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease and number one communication disorder of our aged population; and affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Its prevalence is close to that of cardiovascular disease and arthritis, and can be a precursor to dementia. The auditory perceptual dysfunction is well understood, but knowledge of the biological bases of ARHL is still somewhat lacking. Surprisingly, there are no FDA-approved drugs for treatment. Based on our previous studies of human subjects, where we discovered relations between ser

Auditory spatial deficits in brainstem disorders.

PURPOSE: Brainstem disorders seem to negatively influence the central auditory system, causing spatial hearing deficits. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We tested 11 patients with brainstem lesions due to ischemic stroke (IS), multiple sclerosis (MS), or cerebellopontine angle tumor (CPAT) together with 50 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. We used pure tone audiometry (PTAud), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the horizontal minimum audible angle test (HMAAT) for 8 azimuths with binaural stimulation. RESULTS: The chosen patients and the controls had normal or near normal hearing

The fiber connections of the temporal lobe with emphasis on the rhesus monkey.

The temporal lobe has three functionally distinct areas which have minimal interconnections within the lobe, but extensive connections with other parts of the brain. The superior temporal gyrus contains primary and association auditory areas. Inferotemporal cortex is exclusively a visual association area. The temporal pole is involved in social behavior. In addition, the superior temporal sulcus functions as a sensory integration area. From a review of the literature, a schema is proposed for organizing the reciprocal connections of the three functional areas into a series of loops which follo

Comorbidity and cognitive overlap between developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia.

This study investigated whether there is a co-occurrence between developmental dyslexia and congenital amusia in adults. First, a database of online musical tests on 18,000 participants was analysed. Self-reported dyslexic participants performed significantly lower on melodic skills than matched controls, suggesting a possible link between reading and musical disorders. In order to test this relationship more directly, we evaluated 20 participants diagnosed with dyslexia, 16 participants diagnosed with amusia, and their matched controls, with a whole battery of literacy (reading, fluency, spel

Auditory neglect in children following perinatal stroke.

Auditory neglect has been found in adults with right hemisphere focal brain lesions following strokes. Visual and tactile neglect has been found in children following both left and right hemisphere lesions resulting from perinatal strokes. The present cross-sectional study assessed auditory neglect in children with early unilateral brain damage from perinatal stroke. Twenty-six children with perinatal stroke and matched controls participated. All were asked to identify the location of a pure tone presented in left or right auditory fields. We found that children who had experienced left hemisp

Paediatric otitis media with effusion is connected to deficits in music perception.

PURPOSE: This study tested the hypothesis that children with otitis media with effusion (OME) attending a primary school are at risk of impairment of their musical skills. OME is characterized as an inflammation with accumulation of secretion in the tympanic cavity, leading to conductive hearing loss. METHOD: Perception of music in children is assessed using the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Music Abilities (MBEMA). Listeners are required to judge whether two successive melodies are the same or different on tests of scale, contour, interval and rhythm. They are also queried by a memory te

Speech-perception-in-noise deficits in dyslexia.

Speech perception deficits in developmental dyslexia were investigated in quiet and various noise conditions. Dyslexics exhibited clear speech perception deficits in noise but not in silence. Place-of-articulation was more affected than voicing or manner-of-articulation. Speech-perception-in-noise deficits persisted when performance of dyslexics was compared to that of much younger children matched on reading age, underscoring the fundamental nature of speech-perception-in-noise deficits. The deficits were not due to poor spectral or temporal resolution because dyslexics exhibited normal 'mask

Expectation Cues and False Percepts Generate Stimulus-Specific Activity in Distinct Layers of the Early Visual Cortex.

Perception has been proposed to result from the integration of feedforward sensory signals with internally generated feedback signals. Feedback signals are believed to play an important role in driving false percepts, that is, seeing things that are not actually there. Feedforward and feedback influences on perception can be studied using layer-specific fMRI, which we used here to interrogate neural activity underlying high-confidence false percepts while healthy human participants (N = 25, male and female) performed a perceptual orientation discrimination task. Auditory cues implicitly signal

Transient neuropsychological abnormalities (including Gerstmann's syndrome) during cortical stimulation.

A patient with intractable partial seizures was intensively studied before surgical removal of the epileptogenic focus. A subdural electrode array was surgically placed over the left temporoparietal cortex to better localize the epileptogenic focus and localize cortical function. In addition to speech and sensory findings, acalculia, agraphia, right-left confusion, and finger agnosia were transiently produced by electrical stimulation in the perisylvian area. These findings and their relationship to the controversy surrounding Gerstmann's syndrome are discussed.

Impairments in Multisensory Integration after Stroke.

The integration of information from multiple senses leads to a plethora of behavioral benefits, most predominantly to faster and better detection, localization, and identification of events in the environment. Although previous studies of multisensory integration (MSI) in humans have provided insights into the neural underpinnings of MSI, studies of MSI at a behavioral level in individuals with brain damage are scarce. Here, a well-known psychophysical paradigm (the redundant target paradigm) was employed to quantify MSI in a group of stroke patients. The relation between MSI and lesion locati

Top-down signal transmission and global hyperconnectivity in auditory-visual synesthesia: Evidence from a functional EEG resting-state study.

Auditory-visual (AV) synesthesia is a rare phenomenon in which an auditory stimulus induces a "concurrent" color sensation. Current neurophysiological models of synesthesia mainly hypothesize "hyperconnected" and "hyperactivated" brains, but differ in the directionality of signal transmission. The two-stage model proposes bottom-up signal transmission from inducer- to concurrent- to higher-order brain areas, whereas the disinhibited feedback model postulates top-down signal transmission from inducer- to higher-order- to concurrent brain areas. To test the different models of synesthesia, we es

The fragile nature of the speech-perception deficit in dyslexia: natural vs synthetic speech.

A number of studies reported that developmental dyslexics are impaired in speech perception, especially for speech signals consisting of rapid auditory transitions. These studies mostly made use of a categorical-perception task with synthetic-speech samples. In this study, we show that deficits in the perception of synthetic speech do not generalise to the perception of more naturally sounding speech, even if the same experimental paradigm is used. This contrasts with the assumption that dyslexics are impaired in the perception of rapid auditory transitions.

Neurobiology of perceptual and motor timing in children with spina bifida in relation to cerebellar volume.

The cerebellum is important for perceptual and motor timing in the mature brain, but the timing function of the cerebellum in the immature brain is less well understood. We investigated timing in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SB), a neural tube defect that involves cerebellar dysgenesis, and in age-matched controls. Specifically, we studied perceptual timing (judgements of 400 ms duration) and motor timing (isochronous motor tapping); measured cerebellar volumes; and related perceptual and motor timing to each other and to cerebellar volume measurements. Children with SB had imp
