Characterizing Antimicrobial Resistance in Clinically Relevant Bacteria Isolated at the Human/Animal/Environment Interface Using Whole-Genome Sequencing in Austria.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health issue attributed to the misuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine. Since AMR surveillance requires a One Health approach, we sampled nine interconnected compartments at a hydrological open-air lab (HOAL) in Austria to obtain six bacterial species included in the WHO priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). Whole genome sequencing-based typing included core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). Genetic and phenotypic characterization of AMR was performed for all isolates. Eighty-nine clinically-relevant bacteria w…

Risk factors for diabetic foot complications among patients with type 2 diabetes in Austria-A registry-based retrospective cohort study.

AIMS: Diabetic foot complications, a serious consequence of diabetes mellitus, are associated with a tremendous burden on both individual patients and health care systems. Since prevention strategies may reduce the incidence of this complication, identification of risk factors in large longitudinal studies is essential to optimize early detection and personalized screening of patients at increased risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a registry-based retrospective cohort study using data from 10,688 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged ≥18 years. Cox regression models were used to

Cardiac Rehabilitation in German Speaking Countries of Europe-Evidence-Based Guidelines from Germany, Austria and Switzerland LLKardReha-DACH-Part 1.

BACKGROUND: Although cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) is well accepted in general, CR-attendance and delivery still considerably vary between the European countries. Moreover, clinical and prognostic effects of CR are not well established for a variety of cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: The guidelines address all aspects of CR including indications, contents and delivery. By processing the guidelines, every step was externally supervised and moderated by independent members of the "Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany" (AWMF). Four meta-analyses were performed to eva

14-year-old Schoolchildren can Consent to Get Vaccinated in Tyrol, Austria: What do They know about Diseases and Vaccinations?

In Austria, consent to receiving vaccines is regulated at the federal state level and in Tyrol, children aged 14 years are allowed to consent to receiving vaccination. In August 2017, we investigated determinants associated with vaccine hesitancy, having been vaccinated against measles and human papillomavirus (HPV) and the intention to vaccinate among schoolchildren born in 2002 and 2003. Those who consider measles and HPV a severe disease had a significantly higher intention to be vaccinated (prevalence ratio (PR) of 3.5 (95% CI 1.97-6.32) for measles and a PR of 3.2 (95% CI 1.62-6.35) for H…

Quantitative differences in antibiotic resistance between methicillin-resistant and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated in Hungary, Austria and Macedonia.

The aim of this study was to compare the quantitative susceptibility of methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MSSA) strains from three European countries to nine antistaphylococcal agents. The antibiotic susceptibility of 274 MRSA and 284 MSSA strains from Hungary, Austria and macedonia was tested by the broth microdilution method. The clonal relationship of strains was determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Intermediate susceptibility to vancomycin appeared in Macedonian MRSA strains. Macedonian MRSA strains had high-level amikacin and gentamicin resi…

Cross-national disparities in drug interaction reporting and assessment between Switzerland and Austria: A retrospective, registry-based study using pharmacovigilance data.

Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are a significant contributor to adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in clinical practice. Despite established pharmacovigilance systems, underreporting and inconsistent causality assessment remain challenges. Switzerland and Austria offer a unique comparative setting due to similar healthcare infrastructures but different pharmacovigilance system designs. This study aims to compare pharmacovigilance system outcomes of Switzerland and Austria by examining how system designs may influence DDI reporting patterns and report quality. We retrospectively analysed 1,499 indivi…

A register-based, epidemiological evaluation of disease activity and functional performance in ankylosing spondyloarthritis patients after multimodal spa therapy in Austria.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence regarding the impact of multimodal treatment on disease activity and functional performance in ankylosing spondyloarthritis (AS) remains scarce. This study aims to evaluate changes in these outcomes after multimodal rehabilitation including low-dose radon, using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) and Functional Index (BASFI). METHODS: Mixed-effects linear regression was performed on prospectively collected registry data to explore associations between timepoints and BASDAI/BASFI. Predicted linear margins from fixed effects were calculated fo

Analysis of vaccine-virus-associated rabies cases in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) after oral rabies vaccination campaigns in Germany and Austria.

To eradicate rabies in foxes, almost 97 million oral rabies vaccine baits have been distributed in Germany and Austria since 1983 and 1986, respectively. Since 2007, no terrestrial cases have been reported in either country. The most widely used oral rabies vaccine viruses in these countries were SAD (Street Alabama Dufferin) strains, e.g. SAD B19 (53.2%) and SAD P5/88 (44.5%). In this paper, we describe six possible vaccine-virus-associated rabies cases in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) detected during post-vaccination surveillance from 2001 to 2006, involving two different vaccines and different …

Screening for monogenetic del(GJB6-D13S1830) and digenic del(GJB6-D13S1830)/GJB2 patterns of inheritance in deaf individuals from Eastern Austria.

Genetically caused congenital deafness is a common trait affecting 1 in 2000 newborn children and is predominantly inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Genes such as the gap junction protein beta 2 (GJB2) encoding for Connexin (Cx26) and GJB6 (Cx30) are known to cause sensorineural deafness. Autosomal recessive deafness has been linked both to the monogenetic occurrence of mutated GJB2 or the GJB6 deletion del(GJB6-D13S1830) and digenic GJB2/del(GJB6-D13S1830) inheritance. Monogenetic GJB2 alterations are responsible for 25.5% of deafness in the eastern Austrian population. An addition…
