[Glossodynia and the function of the autonomic nervous system--frequency spectrum analysis of RR intervals recorded electrocardiographically].

This study explored the relationship between the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and glossodynia. The function of the ANS was examined in patients with glossodynia by frequency analysis of heart rate variability. The subjects were 50 women given the diagnosis of glossodynia and 24 healthy volunteers. The heart rate variability of these subjects was evaluated. Mean values of the high frequency power at rest were 1.323 +/- 1.484 ms2 in the group without functional disorders (NF group), 1.861 +/- 1.601 ms2 in the group with functional disorders (F group), and 3.229 +/- 2.044 ms2 in…

Orthostatic hypotension in human immunodeficiency virus infection may be the result of generalized autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

We used an autonomic nervous system (ANS) testing battery to determine if generalized ANS dysfunction was present in five human immunodeficiency virus-positive (HIV+) patients presenting with severe orthostatic hypotension (OH). All five patients had abnormal ANS testing, which demonstrated both sympathetic and parasympathetic defects, i.e., generalized ANS dysfunction. Treatment with fludrocortisone effectively reversed the OH in four of the five patients. The OH was transient in these four patients. We believe it is important to recognize that OH may be the result of generalized ANS dysfunct…

From Iron Deficiency to Overload: A Missing Link in the Mechanisms of Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a key role in cardiovascular regulation by maintaining hemodynamic and metabolic homeostasis through balanced sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. While autonomic dysfunction is classically associated with diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune neuropathies, and chronic cardiovascular conditions, growing evidence suggests that disturbances in iron metabolism represent an underrecognized contributor to cardiac autonomic dysregulation. This narrative review summarizes data from 107 studies on ANS disorders, including 49 investigating cardio…

Assessing autonomic nervous system imbalance in long COVID-19 patients through heart rate variability during tilt testing.

Long COVID-19 is recognized as a condition associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. However, quantitative evidence of its impact on heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure (BP) regulation during postural changes remains limited. This study assessed autonomic imbalance in post-COVID-19 patients by evaluating HRV and BP responses during tilt table testing, comparing long COVID-19 patients with healthy controls. A total of 61 participants were enrolled, 39 long COVID-19 patients (Study Group, SG) and 22 healthy controls (Control Group, CG). HRV was analyzed using time- …

Coherence analysis of peripheral blood flow signals is a potential method for evaluating autonomic nervous system function.

INTRODUCTION: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is crucial for maintaining homeostasis in the body and plays an important role in cardiovascular diseases. Although heart rate variability (HRV) is a commonly used non-invasive clinical tool to evaluate the function of ANS, it mainly reflects cardiac activity, and it is difficult to comprehensively capture the functional information of peripheral vascular regulation of ANS. METHODS: This study explored the feasibility of using peripheral blood flow signals to evaluate the function of ANS. The ANS function of healthy subjects was artificially in…

Hypothalamic pituitary adrenal and autonomic nervous system biomarkers of stress and tobacco relapse: Review of the research.

Tobacco smoking is a risk factor for countless diseases, and smoking relapse remains a major public health concern. Subjective reports of stress by smokers are a common theme for relapse, however, the role of objective stress-related biomarkers in predicting tobacco relapse risk has been less studied. The aim of this manuscript was to review existing literature on the connection between biomarkers of stress and smoking relapse. Overall, trends indicate that blunted hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responses to acute stress, larger reductions in HPA biomarkers during the initial days of abs

Autonomic nervous system activity correlates with peak experiences induced by DMT and predicts increases in well-being.

BACKGROUND: Non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by psychedelics can be accompanied by so-called "peak experiences," characterized at the emotional level by their intensity and positive valence. These experiences are strong predictors of positive outcomes following psychedelic-assisted therapy, and it is therefore important to better understand their biology. Despite growing evidence that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in mediating emotional experiences, its involvement in the psychedelic experience is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investig…

Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children Is Not Associated With Abnormal Autonomic Nervous System Function: Hypothesis and Theory.

The quest to understand the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has led to extensive literature that purports to provide evidence for autonomic dysfunction based on heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), in particular respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of parasympathetic functioning. Many studies conclude that autism is associated with vagal withdrawal and sympathetic hyperactivation based on HRV and electrodermal analyses. We will argue that a critical analysis of the data leads to the hypothesis that autonomic nervous system dysfunction is not a dominant featur…

Maturation of the Autonomic Nervous System in Premature Infants: Estimating Development Based on Heart-Rate Variability Analysis.

This study aims at investigating the development of premature infants' autonomic nervous system (ANS) based on a quantitative analysis of the heart-rate variability (HRV) with a variety of novel features. Additionally, the role of heart-rate drops, known as bradycardias, has been studied in relation to both clinical and novel sympathovagal indices. ECG data were measured for at least 3 h in 25 preterm infants (gestational age ≤32 weeks) for a total number of 74 recordings. The post-menstrual age (PMA) of each patient was estimated from the RR interval time-series by means of multivariate linea…
