Balloon mania: news in the air.

The hot-air balloon, invented by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783, enabled the French King to project his glory, the nobility to exhibit their valor, the literary public to transmit the ideal of the Enlightenment and the plebian public to rejoice in a scientific spectacle. The ensuing balloon mania helped create an integrated public that, because of its size and composition, can only be described as 'democratic' just a few years before the French Revolution. The monumental impact of the balloon was well represented in a flood of poetry, pamphlets, books, journal reports, academic papers and co

Review of major injuries and fatalities in USAF ejections, 1981-1995.

Our laboratories are examining injuries and deaths resulting from mechanical forces applied to aircrew members in the course of Department of Defense aviation operations. In this paper we report only on bodily injuries sustained during ejection from US Air force, aircraft for the fiscal years 1981-1996, that is, major injuries and fatalities resulting directly from seat acceleration forces, from aerodynamic forces applied to crew members during escape through the effects of windblast and parachute opening shock; from direct contact: and from parachute landing injuries. Such injuries occur typi…

Injury in U.S. Army helicopter crashes October 1979-September 1985.

All U.S. Army class A and B mishaps of four types of helicopters occurring from 1 October 1979 through 30 September 1985 were reviewed. During this 6-year period, there were 298 crashes involving 303 aircraft. There were 1,060 individuals aboard the crashed aircraft and 611 were injured, 136 fatally. The most common cause of injury was the "secondary impact" caused by collapse of structure into occupied areas, by inadequate restraint of the occupants which allowed them to flail into structure, or by a combination of both mechanisms. Injury solely related to acceleration occurred infrequently.

Application of radioimmunoassay techniques in support of toxicologic investigations of aircraft accidents.

With the increased emphasis on establishing the presence or absence of drugs associated with aircraft accidents and the fact that fragmentation of tissue may be a problem in investigating these accidents, the need arises for a rapid, sensitive, and specific toxicologic means for detecting drugs that may be present in nanogram concentrations and when only extremely limited quantities of specimens are avialable for study. The use of radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the detection of drugs (e.g., amphetamines, barbiturates, opiates, and methaqualone) in selected aircraft accident cases is presented.

René Cruchet (1875-1959), beyond encephalitis lethargica.

René Cruchet (1875-1959) was a pediatrician from Bordeaux known for his seminal description of encephalitis lethargica during World War I, at the same time as Constantin von Economo (1876-1931) in Vienna published his own description, which, unlike Cruchet's description, provided precious anatomopathological data in addition to the clinical data. Cruchet was interested in tics and dystonia and called for treatment using behavioral psychotherapy that was, above all, repressive. Cruchet was also a physiologist and an innovator in aeronautic medicine-notably, he helped pioneer the study of "aviat

[Intraocular lens implants: functional considerations, with special reference to traffic requirements (author's transl)].

High demands are made on the visual perception of individuals involved in driving, navigation and aviation. Aphakic subjects in particular may attain good central function after operation, but are subject to stringent regulations with regard to their fitness to drive, etc. Their uncorrected vision and visual fields are poor. If only one eye is aphakic there are problems especially with binocular vision. Only the implantation of an artificial lens can return the eye to a "normal" condition. Since, for many patients, driving etc. is an essential part of their occupation, there is also a social p…

Wearable Sensor Fusion for Psychophysiological Arousal Recognition in Air Traffic Control: A Fuzzy MCDM Approach.

Recognizing psychophysiological arousal and strain from wearable sensors extends affective computing beyond discrete-emotion classification. Vigilance decrement during air traffic control (ATC) shifts illustrates this: the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) cannot be administered while a controller is working. We develop and evaluate a wearable, label-free Vigilance/Strain Risk Index (F-VRI) for ATC operators, fusing five physiological signals via entropy-weighted fuzzy TOPSIS. The index was assessed in two samples: 38 controllers measured pre/post shift (preliminary, pilot-level evidence) and 1

Unidentified: Simulation-based education in forensic odontology.

We report on a prototype computer-simulated training programme in dental autopsy entitled Unidentified. This was developed to offer a simulated real-world experience of conducting dental identification procedures as a forensic odontologist. Unidentified is a tool developed as a proof of concept for a single case from an air crash disaster with a running time of 40 min to an hour. Standards of a disaster victim identification (DVI) guide and forms were followed. The game development platform 'Unreal Engine' was used by collaborators from a gaming enterprise and academic contributors from a lead

Finite element analysis of shank and ankle with different boot collar heights in parachuting landing on inversion ground surface.

This study aimed to the biomechanics of the foot-ankle-shank complex with different boots collar heights in parachuting landing on inversion ground surface. A finite element model including tibia, fibula, ankle, foot and parachuting boot was developed. Three collar heights (low, medium, high) of the parachuting boot were simulated. Von-Mises stress, ankle inversion angle, ligament force and bone displacement were analyzed. Compared with that of the high and low collar heights, boots with medium collar height produced the lowest peak stress on the tibia and the articular cartilage of the subtal

Suicide in parachuting: A case report and review of the literature.

Skydiving fatalities are mostly accidental and the result of human errors. However, suicides may be greatly underreported in skydivers. We present the case of a young civilian skydiver who committed suicide by jumping from an altitude of 4000m without activating his chutes. Witnesses reported that the victim had remained in a freefall position until ground impact. Besides an extensive blunt trauma, the autopsy showed an antero-posterior flattening of the body with symmetrical abrasions on its front, which were consistent with a high-energy impact on the ground in a "belly-down" position. The Mental Health of Older Persons After Human-Induced Disasters: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Epidemiological Data.

BACKGROUND: Older people are increasingly "in harm's way" following human-induced disasters (HIDs). There is debate in the literature as to the relative impact of disasters on their psychological health compared with other age groups. Natural disasters and HIDs are thought to affect survivors differentially, and this may extend to older adults as a group. In the absence of existing systematic reviews, we aimed to synthesize the available evidence and conduct meta-analyses of the effects of HIDs on the psychological health of older versus younger adults. METHODS: A meta-analysis was conducted

Impact of vertigo and spatial disorientation on concurrent cognitive tasks.

Disorientation may draw attention from other activities and its impact on cognition may cause pilot error and problems of concentration in dizzy patients. Tasks used to study the impact of disorientation include number processing, intelligence scales and Brookes matrices (reproduction of 2xD patterns of numbers vs. nonsensical sentences), and Stroop tasks to probe selective effects on spatial versus verbally-loaded tasks. This variety of tasks has been used to evaluate cognitive performance in numerous scenarios, including visual-vestibular mismatch, vection, spinning, coriolis, balancing, and

Exposure evaluation to airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an italian airport.

The aim of this study was to use environmental monitoring to evaluate occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biphenyl in an Italian airport. Air was sampled using a quartz fiber filter, a polyurethane foam, and an XAD-2 layer. After extraction with dichloromethane, concentration and purification analyses of 25 PAHs (including biphenyl) were carried out by gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry. In winter 2005, 12 air samples were taken at 120 L/min for 24 hours in three different areas of the airport. PAH levels were found to be generally low. In all invest

Odontological identification of the victims of flight AI. IT 5148 air disaster Lyon-Strasbourg 20.01.1992.

The authors report on the contribution of odontological identification of the flight AI. IT 5148 air disaster victims, which occurred on 20th January 1992. The identification procedure was difficult due to large numbers of bodies and mutilations and required the involvement of multidisciplinary teams composed of odontologists, forensic pathologists, radiologists and biologists. The authors set up a simple, discriminant classification which was easy to handle by a multidisciplinary team. Four groups were defined according to the matching characteristics between ante and post mortem data. Perfec

Probability of casualties in an airport disaster.

World airline accident statistics for the period 1960 to 1970 indicate the number of seriously, but nonfatally injured is unlikely to exceed 25% of the occupant capacity of the largest aircraft using an airport. In only 1 accident out of 20 will this number be an underestimate. This estimate may be of value in medical planning for an airport disaster and in the assessment of loads on hospitals.
