Bacteriology and clinical outcomes of pleural infections in Singapore: an 8-year retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Pleural infections pose significant clinical challenges due to diagnostic delays, poor culture yield, and rising regional incide … predictors of mortality, while there was no pathogen-specific effect on outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The bacteriology of local pleural infections differs from that previously published of the region. Reasons for these may include an older population, the impact of vaccinations, and high burden of comorbidities such as diabetes and relatively high incidence of lung …

[ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA BACTERIOLOGY IN CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN THREE MONTHS IN THE LAST 16 YEARS].

BACKGROUND: Only scant information is available regarding the bacteriology of acute otitis media (AOM) in neonates. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the bacteriology of AOM post the introduction of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) in children younger than 3 months and its relation to the mode of delivery. METHODS: Retrospective bacteriological analysis of middle ear fluids taken from children younger than 60 months suffering from AOM. The effect of PCV13 and mode of delivery, caesarian section vs vaginal delivery, on AOM bacteriology was evaluated and compared between children younger than 3…

Cystitis: significant associations between pathology, histology, and quantitative bacteriology in sows, a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The importance of cystitis in pig production is controversial and sparse information is available on its frequency and etiology in sows. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of bacteriuria, macroscopical and histological lesions of the urinary bladder in culled sows. Urinary bladders and urine samples were obtained from 176 culled sows at slaughter. The urine samples collected by cystocentesis were analyzed to determine bacterial content and pathological findings, macroscopic as well as microscopic, of the bladder were recorded for each sow. RESULTS: The prevalenc

Bovine salpingitis: Histopathology, bacteriology, cytology and transcriptomic approaches and its impact on the oocyte competence.

The present study was performed to examine the histopathology, cytology, bacteriology and expression pattern of a targeted set of genes of cytokines in the oviduct of cows with inflammation (Experiment 1). In addition, the effects of oviductal fluid from cows with salpingitis on the oocyte maturation and fertilization in vitro were examined (Experiment 2). The most frequent bacterial co-infection was Escherichia coli and Fusobacterium necrophorum, which was always associated with severe histopathologic salpingitis. Out of 15 cows with histologically healthy uterus, only one cow (6.7%) displaye…

A Retrospective Study on Bacteriology, Clinicopathologic and Radiographic Features in 28 Cats Diagnosed with Pyothorax.

This retrospective study aimed to determine the etiological, clinicopathological, and radiographic features and outcome of feline pyothorax cases. Medical records from twenty-eight cats with pyothorax aged from 4 months to 10 years (median 10 months) diagnosed between 2013 and 2020 were reviewed. Dyspnoea (75.0%), abnormal lung sounds (75.0%) and open-mouth breathing (64.3%) were the predominant respiratory signs. Leucocytosis (61.5%), particularly monocytosis (68.0%), and hyperglobulinaemia (65.4%) were among the most prominent findings in blood analysis. Bilateral pleural effusion was found

A 16-year Longitudinal Cohort Study of Incidence and Bacteriology of Necrotising Fasciitis in England.

BACKGROUND: Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive, destructive soft tissue infection with high mortality. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and mortality of NF amongst patients admitted to English National Health Service (NHS) hospitals. The secondary aims included the identification of risk factors for mortality and causative pathogens. METHODS: The Hospital Episodes Statistics database identified patients with NF admitted to English NHS Trusts from 1/1/2002 to 31/12/2017. Information on patient demographics, co-morbid conditions, microbiology specimen

The aim of this work was to assess the agreement between endometrial cytology and uterine biopsy for the diagnosis of endometritis (END), th … at a municipal pet public shelter. Before ovariohysterectomy (OVX) samples for vaginal cytology and bacteriology, and blood samples were taken. After OVX endometrial cytology, bacteriological samples and biopsy were collected. Dynamics of postpartum endometrial cytology and bacteriology and their relationship to fertility in dairy cows.

Endometrial samples were obtained from 56 consecutively calving dairy cows examined for endometrial cytology and for aerobic and anaerobic bacterial growth. Changes over time, correlations between different cell types and between cell and bacterial populations and with fertility measures were calculated. The proportion of neutrophils in cytologic preparations decreased with time postpartum. Other cell types did not change significantly with time. The proportion of neutrophils early (Day 0 and 7) postpartum was negatively correlated with neutrophil proportion at 5 or 7 weeks postpartum and posi

[Analysis of bacteriology of drug sensitivity in the inactive stage of chronic suppurative otitis media].

OBJECTIVE: Detecting the sensitivities of bacterium in the inactive stage of chronic suppurative otitis media, to guide a clinical rational drug use after the type I tympanoplasty. METHOD: Collecting 148 hospitalized patients from Guangdong General Hospital diagnosed as inactive stage of chronic suppurative otitis media, who had been dry ear for more than 1 months. Analyse the results of drug sensitivity on the mucosa surfaces of the middle ear. RESULT: There are 16 species of bacterium, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae etc. Total positive rate of

The bacteriology of chronic rhinosinusitis and the pre-eminence of Staphylococcus aureus in revision patients.

BACKGROUND: The role of bacteria in the etiopathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) remains an area of interest. The impact of surgery … ents for any of the bacterial outcomes. CONCLUSION: This study highlights important factors in the bacteriology of CRS patients. S. aureus was the most prevalent species identified in our cohort, followed by P. aeruginosa. S. aureus rates of isolation were also significantly higher in patients undergoing revision surgery. No association was found between the …
