AIMS: This study focuses on identifying the correlates associated with the emergence of feelings of blameworthiness associated with a suicide or other traumatic death and its associations with grief complications.
METHODS: Based on a mailed questionnaire survey of 575 mostly white and economically advantaged bereaved parents, 462 who lost a child to suicide, 48 to a drug overdose, 37 to ordinary accidents, and 24 to natural causes, we utilized chi-square tests, correlations and multiple regression analysis to compare and contrast patterns in the data.

The death of a baby is one of the most challenging bereavements for parents and healthcare professionals. This study explores the spiritual and theological issues raised for healthcare chaplains as they minister with parents following perinatal bereavement. Chaplains from 85% of maternity units in the Republic of Ireland participated in this study. Suffering, doubt and presence were the main theological themes raised for chaplains following perinatal death. The process of theological reflection is recommended as a sustaining and necessary tool in perinatal healthcare ministry.

As many as one-third of women bereaved by stillbirth suffer psychological decompensation, and a similar proportion see the obstetric team as unsupportive. A case history is presented of a woman who suffered severe psychiatric illness after delivering a stillborn anencephalic infant. This paper discusses the powerful influence that the behavior of the obstetric team in the delivery room can exert on the long-term outcome of the crisis. This case highlights a number of practical aspects of the psychological management of bereavement by stillbirth.
