Enhanced case management to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in Northern Plains communities.

Women proven to be extremely high risk for drinking during pregnancy were provided case management (CM) enhanced with strategies derived from motivational interviewing (MI) as a part of a comprehensive Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) epidemiology and prevention program in four American Indian communities in Northern Plains states. Data on the first women enrolled (n=131) revealed that they have extreme issues with alcohol abuse to overcome. Sixty-five percent of these women have experienced extensive alcohol use within their immediate family. At intake, 24% of CM clients reported binge drinking o…

Preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancy among an American Indian/Alaska Native population: effect of a screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment intervention.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are the result of alcohol-exposed pregnancies (AEP) and believed to be the leading known cause of developmental disabilities in the United States. Our objective was to determine whether a culturally targeted Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) intervention may reduce risky drinking and vulnerability to AEP among American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) women in Southern California. METHODS: Southern California AIAN women of childbearing age who completed a survey including questions regarding alcohol consumption and contrac

Ablation of Sympathetic Nerve-β3 Adrenergic Receptor-mediated Adipose Tissue Lipolysis Attenuates Alcohol-induced Liver Injury in Mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Binge drinking causes fat accumulation in the liver and is a known risk factor for more severe forms of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Although adipocyte-released free fatty acids (FFA) have been shown to contribute to alcohol-induced liver damage, the signaling pathways that trigger lipolytic activity in adipose tissues following acute alcohol overconsumption is largely unknown. Notably, activation of sympathetic nerve-β3 adrenergic receptor (Adrb3) plays a central role in sustained adipocyte lipolysis. However, whether this pathway is involved in acute alcohol-ind…

Scoping review of assessment tools for, magnitudes of and factors associated with problem drinking in population-based studies.

BACKGROUND: The term "problem drinking" includes a spectrum of alcohol problems ranging from excessive or heavy drinking to alcohol use diso … ication Test. Studies defined problem drinking in various ways, including excessive/heavy drinking, binge drinking, alcohol use disorder, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Across studies, the prevalence of heavy drinking ranged from <1.0% to 53.0%, binge drinking from 2.7% to 48.2%, alcohol abuse from 4.0% to 19.0%, alcohol dependence from 0.1% to 39.0% and …

Sex dependent correlation of spleen atrophy and behavior deficits induced by binge treatment with ethanol in rodent models.

OBJECTIVES: During physical and psychosocial development, many adolescents engage in binge alcohol drinking. Ethanol (EtOH) is the key chemical in alcoholic beverages. EtOH intoxication impairs locomotor behaviors. We previously found that binge treatment with EtOH (BE) causes spleen atrophy, leading to immune dysregulation. With these premises, we hypothesized that BE-induced spleen atrophy is correlated with compromised locomotion and behaviors in adolescence. METHODS: We exposed F344 rats to either 3 days of BE (mimicking college drinking) or water following pubertal onset. 24 h following

Alcohol use during pregnancy.

Heavy alcohol intake during pregnancy is associated with numerous adverse effects on the fetus, including low birth weight, congenital anomalies, mental retardation, and behavioral and learning disabilities. There is increasing evidence that moderate drinking also may cause these problems, but to a lesser degree. Less is known about the effects of a single drink or a single alcoholic binge, but no absolutely safe level of alcohol consumption has been determined for pregnant women.

Prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders among the general and Aboriginal populations in Canada and the United States.

Prenatal alcohol exposure may cause a number of health complications for the mother and developing fetus, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of i) alcohol use (any amount) and binge drinking (4 or more standard drinks on a single occasion) during pregnancy, and ii) Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and FASD among the general and Aboriginal populations in Canada and the United States, based on the available literature. Comprehensive systematic literature searches and meta-analyses, assuming a random-effects model, were conducted. It …

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Addictive and Potentially Addictive Behaviors in Swiss Adults: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Modern environments expose individuals to stimuli that may promote seemingly harmless, yet potentially addictive behaviors. This study investigated the prevalence, co-occurrence, and risk factors of substance and non-substance addictive behaviors in adults to better inform clinical practice and screening strategies. METHODS: Data were collected from the Specchio digital cohort in Geneva, Switzerland (2023-2024). Addictive and potentially addictive behaviors included smoking, recreational drug use, binge drinking, gambling, excessive leisure screen use, and sugar-sweetened…

Greater readiness to cut down on drinking behaviors increases effects of a digital behavioral health intervention tool in reducing unhealthy alcohol use among Latino emergency department patients.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the association between readiness to change and reductions in unhealthy alcohol use among Latino adults in the emergency department (ED) who used the Automated Bilingual Computerized Alcohol Screening Intervention (AB-CASI), a digital behavioral health intervention tool. METHODS: The study included 310 self-identified US Latino ED patients with unhealthy drinking. The primary independent variable was baseline readiness to reduce alcohol consumption. Outcomes included binge drinking episodes in the past 28 days and average weekly drinks, assessed at baseline and…

Sigma receptor-induced heavy drinking in rats: Modulation by the opioid receptor system.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, for which new efficacious treatments are necessary. The opioid receptor system is a mediator of the rewarding effects of alcohol; in particular, while activation of μ opioid receptors enhances ethanol intake in rodents, opioid-receptor antagonists, such as naloxone and naltrexone, reduce its pleasurable and reinforcing effects, thereby decreasing alcohol. Sigma receptors (Sig-Rs) have been proposed as modulators of the effects of alcohol and, therefore, as a potential new pharmacological target for AUD. Somewhat

Alcohol and the cardiovascular system.

Mlíková Seidlerová J. Alcohol and the cardiovascular system The consumption of alcohol leads to a variety of direct and indirect effects on the cardiovascular system, as evidenced by numerous epidemiological studies on this topic. The effect of alcohol on the development of cardiovascular complications is influenced not only by the amount of alcohol consumed but also by the drinking pattern (binge drinking vs. regular consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol). This applies to the relationship between alcohol consumption and the rise in blood pressure or the development of arterial hypertensi…
