The Effect of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback on Recovery After Aerobic Exercise.

Recovery is a critical factor in athletic performance, and accelerating this process is essential to enable athletes to perform more effectively in both training load and competitive performance. After exercise, immediate recovery is potentially helpful for investigating autonomic activity levels, as they are definable with heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ten sessions of HRV-Biofeedback (HRV-BF) training on recovery process parameters after the aerobic performance. In this study, twenty-four soccer players aged 18-24 volunteered to participa

Short-Term Effects of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback on Working Memory.

Drawing upon the well-documented impact of long-term heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) on psychophysiological responses, this study seeks to explore the short-term effects arising from a single HRVB session during and after paced breathing exercise. The research aligns with the neurovisceral integration model, emphasizing the link between heart rate variability (HRV) levels and cognitive performance. Therefore, a randomized controlled trial employing a between-subjects design was conducted with 38 participants. Each participant was assigned to either the paced breathing intervention gr

The efficacy of heart rate variability biofeedback training on sleep disorders and impact of fibromyalgia: Results of a phase II randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMs) is a chronic, musculoskeletal pain disorder characterized by sleep disturbances, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) aiming to improve self-regulation and strengthen the parasympathetic nervous system has been shown to be effective in several pain syndromes, but its efficacy in FMs has not been adequately investigated. This Phase II trial aimed to assess the feasibility and preliminary measurement of the improvement induced by HRV-BF in FMs. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with FMs were recruited. Patients were ra

The effectiveness of a 6-week biofeedback gait retraining programme in people with knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gait retraining is a common therapeutic intervention that can alter gait characteristics to reduce knee loading in knee osteoarthritis populations. It can be enhanced when combined with biofeedback that provides real-time information about the users' gait, either directly (i.e. knee moment feedback) or indirectly (i.e. gait pattern feedback). However, it is unknown which types of biofeedback are more effective at reducing knee loading, and also how the changes in gait affect pain during different activities of daily living. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the acute (6 weeks

Neural Changes in Children With Residual Speech Sound Disorder After Ultrasound Biofeedback Speech Therapy.

PURPOSE: Children with residual speech sound disorders (RSSD) have shown differences in neural function for speech production, as compared to their typical peers; however, information about how these differences may change over time and relative to speech therapy is needed. To address this gap, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine functional activation and connectivity on adaptations of the syllable repetition task (SRT-Early Sounds and SRT-Late Sounds) in children with RSSD before and after a speech therapy program. METHOD: Sixteen children with RSSD completed an f

Effectiveness of lumbar stabilization exercise with real-time ultrasound imaging biofeedback on lumbar multifidus muscle cross-sectional area in individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Structural impairment of the lumbar multifidus muscle, such as reduced cross-sectional area, is evident among individuals with chronic low back pain. Real-time ultrasound imaging (RUSI) biofeedback has been reported to improve preferential activation of as well as retention in the ability to activate the lumbar multifidus muscle during lumbar stabilization exercises (LSE). However, evidence of the effectiveness of this treatment approach in individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain (NCLBP) is still limited. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to determine the effecti

Three-dimensional high-resolution anorectal manometry can predict response to biofeedback therapy in defecation disorders.

PURPOSE: Biofeedback therapy (BT) is a simple and effective technique for managing outlet constipation and fecal incontinence. Several clinical factors are known to predict BT response, but a 50% failure rate persists. Better selection of BT responsive patients is required. We aimed to determine whether the defecation disorder type per high-resolution manometry (HRM) was predictive of BT response. METHODS: We analyzed clinical, manometric, and ultrasound endoscopic data from patients who underwent BT in our department between January 2015 and January 2016. Patients were classified into four g

The efficacy of biofeedback approaches for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Biofeedback is applied to target excessive and/or deficient physiological signals to help patients identifying and self-managing their symptoms. Biofeedback has been employed in psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mainly by using neural signals - neurofeedback. Recently, OCD has been integrated into the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCD&RD) category (body dysmorphic, hoarding, trichotillomania/hair-pulling, and excoriation/skin-picking disorders). The efficacy of biofeedback for OCD&RD is still unknown. Our work provides a complete overview of pu

A review of opioid dependence treatment: pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to treat opioid addiction.

Opioid dependence is a problem of national concern, especially with dramatically increased rates of abuse and dependence of prescription opioids. The current article provides an up-to-date review of the literature on opioid dependence treatment, with a focus on conclusions drawn by experts in the field (e.g., Cochrane reviews and meta-analyses) and methodologically rigorous studies (e.g., randomized controlled trials). We describe the major classes of drug treatments available, including opioid agonist (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine, LAAM), antagonist (e.g., naltrexone) and non-opioid pharmac

Intervention for lateral /s/ using electropalatography (EPG) biofeedback and an intensive motor learning approach: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Visual biofeedback using electropalatography (EPG) has been beneficial in the treatment of some cases of lateral /s/ misarticulation. While EPG intervention is motorically based, studies have not commonly employed a motor learning approach to treatment. Furthermore, treatment success is measured primarily by change to EPG tongue-palate contact patterns and listener ratings conducted by speech-language therapists. Studies have not commonly measured articulatory change without the palate in-situ using acoustic analysis and non-professional listeners. AIMS: To determine if an intensi
