The potential use of biological agents such as viruses, bacteria or bacterial toxins as weapons of mass destruction has fuelled significant national and international research and development in novel prophylactic or therapeutic countermeasures. Such measures need to be fast-acting and broadly specific, a hallmark of target-specific polyclonal antibodies (pAbs). As reviewed here, pathogen-specific antibodies in the form of human or animal serum have long been recognised as effective therapies in a number of infectious diseases. This review focuses in particular on the potential biowarfare agen

The role of a pharmacy emergency response team (PERT) trained to respond to episodes of terrorism involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents is described. Pharmacists must be prepared to support their health systems in responding to episodes of terrorism by detecting exposure to CBRN agents and mitigating, treating, and preventing casualties resulting from exposure to those agents. Maimonides Medical Center, whose pharmacists responded to the medical and pharmaceutical needs of victims of the World Trade Center attacks and anthrax exposures, has developed the PERT,

OBJECTIVE: Colchicine is the mainstay treatment for Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). However 5% to 10% of the patients with FMF are unresponsive or intolerant to colchicine. Biologics are efficient in many rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes. We performed a systematic review to analyze patients with FMF, including juvenile patients who received treatment with biologics.
METHODS: A MEDLINE search, including articles published in English language between 1990 and May 2012, was performed. Pati

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with emerging phenotypes and endotypes. At present, 5 distinct biologics are Food and Drug Administration-approved as an add-on therapy for difficult-to-control type 2-high asthma. Because allergy specialists manage a spectrum of diseases for which biologics may be appropriate, it is important to understand their prescribing patterns.
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the allergist's use of biologics in the treatment of asthma, including barriers, preferences, indications for prescribing, measures to determine effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness.

The constant use of chemical insecticides for Aedes aegypti control has caused resistance in the mosquito populations. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the larvicidal potential of extracts and fractions of plants on A. aegypti larvae. The analysis included sixty one extracts and twenty five fractions of fifty botanical species at concentrations of 0.25; 0.12; 0.06 to 0.03 mg mL-1; 4 replications and one negative control of dechlorinate water and 1% DMSO; and a positive control with rotenone. The toxicity index in descending order with LC50 for the most active of the extracts se

Biological weapons are weapons of mass destruction that use pathogens (bacteria, viruses) or the toxins produced by them to target living organisms or to contaminate non-living substances. In the past, biological warfare has been repeatedly used. Anthrax, plague and smallpox are regarded as the most dangerous biological weapons by various institutions. Nowadays it seems quite unlikely that biological warfare will be employed in any military campaigns. However, the possibility remains that biological weapons may be used in acts of bioterrorism. In addition all diseases caused by biological weap

We present the case of a 48-year-old South African woman with no smoking history, and seropositive rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed in 2001. She was treated with chloroquine (150 mg, 4 times per week) and methotrexate (30 mg weekly) with well-controlled symptoms until 2015, when she developed a disease flare. Her treatment regimen was changed to leflunomide (20 mg daily) monotherapy with subsequent symptom control. Biologic agents were not accessible because of cost constraints.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers lesion control with tissue preservation, which is important for patients seeking to avoid excision in cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). This review examines evidence for aminolaevulinate- and hexaminolaevulinate-based PDT as a tissue-preserving treatment for cervical HSIL and explores the biological rationale for translating near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT) to intraperitoneal ovarian cancer. We summarise mechanisms by which PDT and NIR-PIT induce immunogenic cell death and engage cGAS-STING signalling, and review cervical c

Gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare neoplasms, although their prevalence has increased substantially over the past three decades. Moreover, there has been an increased clinical recognition and characterization of these neoplasms. They show extremely variable biological behavior and clinical course. Most NETs have endocrine function and secrete peptides and neuroamines that cause distinct clinical syndromes, including carcinoid syndrome; however, many are clinically silent until late presentation with mass effects. Investigation and management should be individu

In the management of municipal solid waste (MSW), the sorting-composting approach presents many advantages. However, since MSW contains a number of chemical and biological agents, the compost should not be necessarily a harmless product. These contaminants may expose different populations to health hazards, ranging from the composting plant workers to the consumers of vegetable products grown in soils treated with compost. Recent information concerning health risks derived from occupational exposure to organic dusts, bioaerosols and microorganisms in MSW composting plants is here reviewed. An

Nucleoside analogs are extremely useful for the development of therapeutic agents to control viral diseases and cancer. Among the numerous modifications on the nucleoside skeleton, replacement of the oxygen of the furanose ring by a CH2 group resulted in increased flexibility and higher resistance to phosphorylases and led to carbocyclic nucleoside analogs (or carbanucleosides). The broad spectrum of biological activities of carbocyclic nucleosides led to tremendous research interest in their syntheses. The article documents recent strategies for the synthesis of active carbocyclic nucleosides

Surface modification of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with organosilane capping agents represents an effective strategy to control their physicochemical and biological properties. In this work, we report for the first time the use of halogenosilanes, namely (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane (CPTMS), (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane (BPTMS) and (3-iodopropyl)trimethoxysilane (IPTMS), for the surface functionalization of ZnO NPs obtained by chemical precipitation. Structural and morphological characterization (PXRD, TEM, SEM-EDX and FTIR) confirmed successful surface modification and revealed

Determining the effects of chemicals used in agricultural pest control on non-target organisms such as parasitoids is crucial for biological control programs. The pupal endoparasitoid wasp Pimpla turionellae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is an important biological control agent that relies on natural hosts, such as the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to complete its development. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo and in silico impacts of the antifungal agent terbinafine (TRB) on the oxidative stress markers and detoxification enzymes of adult P. turionellae.

Molecular bioforensic research is dependent on rapid and sensitive methods such as real-time PCR (qPCR) for the identification of microorganisms. The use of synthetic positive control templates containing small modifications outside the primer and probe regions is essential to ensure all aspects of the assay are functioning properly, including the primers and probes. However, a typical qPCR or reverse transcriptase qPCR (qRT-PCR) assay is limited in differentiating products generated from positive controls and biological samples because the fluorescent probe signals generated from each type of

While naturally occurring insect-pathogenic viruses are valuable resources utilized as biocontrol agents, the covert viruses maintained in laboratory insect populations have been comparatively less explored. In this study, we report the isolation and characterization of a novel nucleopolyhedrovirus, CypoNPV, from a laboratory population of Cydia pomonella. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 112,909 bp for CypoNPV, exhibiting close phylogenetic proximity to Cryptophlebia peltastica nucleopolyhedrovirus (CrpeNPV). Comparative life-history analyses of populations designated as norm

Sulfonamides belong to the most interesting classes of organic and bioactive compounds, historically introduced as the first widely used synthetic antibacterial agents. Currently, they still serve as versatile scaffolds across medicinal, coordination, and applied chemistry. Nowadays, the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance and the urgent need for improved therapeutic strategies are evident. Thus, sulfonamide derivatives have regained attention as adaptable platforms for designing compounds with broadened biological profiles, including their antimicrobial, anticancer, and enzyme-targeted
