Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have already drawn a lot of attention for their accumulation and reproductive toxicity in organisms. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanoic sulfonate (PFOS), two representative PFAS, are toxic to humans and animals. Due to their widespread use in environmental media with multiple toxicities, PFOA and PFOS have been banned in numerous countries, and many substitutes have been produced to meet market requirements. Unfortunately, most alternatives to PFOA and PFOS have proven to be cumulative and highly toxic. Of the reported multiple organ

In 15 children with a lowered gammaglobulin level a single substitution with HGG was made, with the impact of this substitution on the number of B-cells in the peripheral blood being examined by means of the direct fluorescence antibody technique. In 9 from 15 children the substitution had no influence on the number of B-cells. However, a significant increase of the number of B-cells could be observed in 6 from 15 children. 14 days after the substitution the number of B-cells lay within the normal range again.

Anemia commonly affects critically ill patients. The causes are multifactorial and include acute blood loss, blood loss from diagnostic testing and blunted red blood cell production. Blood transfusions are frequently given to patients in intensive care units to treat low hemoglobin levels due to either acute blood loss or subacute anemia associated with critical illness. Although blood transfusion is a life-saving therapy, evidence suggests that it may be associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. A number of blood conservation strategies exist that may mitigate anemia in ho

The acute pancreatitis can be a life-threatening disease and can demand the performance of intensive-therapeutic measures. The central position there in occupy the infusion therapy and the parenteral nutrition. On account of the increased catabolism already in the initial phase of the acute pancreatitis the supply of suitable carriers of calories in adequate quantity is necessary. The indication of glucose and the differential indication of fructose and Alvesin "Neu" are discussed. In the treatment of shock human albumin, plasma and plasma substitutes as well as blood take the precedence. Apar

The normal microvascular perfusion pattern is characterized by temporal and spatial variations of capillary flow. Local driving pressure, arteriolar vasomotion and endothelial cells are key-factors for local regulation of hydraulic resistance and fluid balance between the blood and tissue compartments. In shock, both the central and particularly the local mechanisms controlling microvascular perfusion are impaired. The microvascular perfusion pattern becomes permanently inhomogeneous due to lack of arteriolar vasomotion, changes of flow properties of blood, endothelial cell swelling and blood

Despite being an indispensable clinical procedure, the transfusion of donor blood has important limitations including a short shelf-life, limited availability and specific storage requirements. Therefore, a lot of effort has been devoted to developing hemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) that are able to replace or complement standard blood transfusions, especially in extreme life-threatening situations. Herein, we employed a Hb-loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) core which was subsequently coated with nanozymes to protect the encapsulated Hb from oxidation by reactive oxygen species.

Artificial plasma expanders (PEs) are widely used in modern transfusion medicine. PEs do not contain components of the coagulation system, so their infusion in large volumes causes haemodilution and affects haemostasis. However, the existing information on this effect is contradictory. We studied the effect of the very process of plasma dilution on coagulation and tested the hypothesis that moderate dilution with a PE should accelerate clotting owing to a decrease in concentration of coagulation inhibitors. The standard clotting times, a thrombin generation test, and the spatial rate of clot g
