PURPOSE: Mothers who deliver a low-birth-weight (LBW) infant may themselves be at excess risk for cardiovascular disease. We investigated whether older women who bore LBW infants had higher blood pressure, lipid, glucose, insulin, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein concentrations, and pulse wave velocity compared to women with normal-weight births.
METHODS: Participants were 446 women with a mean age of 80 years and 47% black. Women reported birth weight and complications for each pregnancy. Analysis was limited to first births not complicated by hypertension or preeclampsia.

We undertook anthropometric assessments of 530 HIV-seropositive and 314 HIV-seronegative men in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study at a regular visit that occurred between 1 April and 30 September 1999. We found anthropomorphic differences that were independent of age: the 384 seropositive men receiving HAART had diminished body size and higher frequency and severity of body habitus abnormalities, particularly lipoatrophy, compared with the 314 seronegative men.

As part of a multi-agency study of alligator health, 28 American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) were captured along a transect through the Florida Everglades in 1999. Liver and tail muscle tissues were sampled and analyzed on a wet weight basis for total mercury (THg) using cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. A follow-up study was carried out to determine whether either impaired or disproportionate fetal growth are associated with a raised total serum IgE concentration in men and women aged 50 years. The serum IgE concentration was measured in 146 men and 134 women born in Preston (Lancashire, UK) between 1935 and 1943, whose size at birth had been measured in detail. Sixty-two subjects were found to have an IgE concentration above 80 IU/ml. PURPOSE: To determine if vertebral bone densities or vertebral body sizes contribute to gender differences in vertebral bone mass in adults.
