[Risk factors and prevention strategies in eating disorders].

Scientific evidence supports an interactive model of biopsychosocial influences on the etiology of eating disorders. New genome-wide association studies suggest underlying metabolic dysregulation in anorexia nervosa. Among the psychological factors, body dissatisfaction (IC) is the most consistent predictor, mainly in females. Low self-esteem, negative affect and internalization of the ideal of thinness predict IC. Certain personality traits and other individual factors such as a high body mass index, emotional problems and some metabolic and digestive diseases, social factors such as some spo…

Psychological aspects of the polycystic ovary syndrome.

An overwhelming majority of scientific literature on the polycystic ovary syndrome has utilized a medical approach to analyse the disorder and only few studies have investigated its predisposing psychological factors. This literature review sheds light on the fact that this gynaecological disorder of endocrine origin, which is becoming more frequent, can be associated with a great number of psychological symptoms (e.g. depression, anxiety, body image dissatisfaction, eating and sexual disorders, and low life satisfaction). Thus, the syndrome is significant from a therapeutic point of view as w

"I'm never enough": Associations of childhood emotional abuse subtypes with overweight preoccupation and dietary restraint among women.

Childhood emotional abuse from authority figures encompasses verbal abuse, emotional rejection, and overexpectations. Although global emotional abuse is an established correlate of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, the unique roles of these specific subtypes remain underexamined. Across two studies of adult women recruited from CloudResearch (Ns = 2566; 824), we evaluated associations between authority figure abuse subtypes, body image, and dietary restraint. Bivariate correlations revealed that all subtypes related to poorer body image and higher restraint. Hierarchical regressions …

Embodiment of underweight and normal-weight avatars affects bodily self-representations in anorexia nervosa.

Body image distortion (BID) is a crucial aspect of anorexia nervosa (AN), leading to body overestimation, dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem. BID significantly influences the onset, maintenance, and relapse of the pathology. We assessed whether a Full Body Illusion (FBI) using under and normal-weight avatars' bodies affects perceptual body image and body schema estimations in both individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls (HC). After each embodiment procedure, we asked participants to estimate the width of their hips (Perceptual Body Image Task) and the minimum aperture wid

Social media and women's sexual self-concept: a scoping review of psychosexual, body image, and genital self-perception outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Social media platforms have created digital environments that make women's bodies, sexuality, and self-presentation constantly visible, assessable, and comparable. Increasing evidence suggests that social media use can influence women's sexual self-concept through mechanisms such as appearance comparison, self-objectification, sexualized self-presentation, and genital self-perception. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize the existing literature on the effects of social media use on women's sexual self-concept. METHOD: The study was conducted in accordance with the scopin

Assessing the Efficacy of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy on Body Image in Adolescent Scoliosis Patients Using Virtual Reality.

Background/Objectives: Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis require emotional support to change their experience of their desired body shape and to feel optimistic about the cosmetic results of surgical treatment. Recently, the use of virtual reality in psychological assessment and treatment has given specialists a technology that appears particularly well-suited for addressing body image disorders. The study objectives were two-fold. Firstly, we aimed to evaluate changes within the body image of scoliosis patients pre- and postoperatively. Secondly, we aimed to investigate if differences in

Neural mechanisms of perceptual and affective body-image disturbance during own-body and ideal-body estimation.

Body-image disturbance is a core feature of eating disorders and can predict their development in healthy individuals. There are two components of body-image disturbance: perceptual disturbance (associated with overestimation of body size) and affective disturbance (associated with body dissatisfaction). Previous behavioral studies have hypothesized that attention to particular body parts and negative body-related emotions resulting from social pressure are associated with the respective degrees of perceptual and affective disturbance; however, the neural representations that underlie this hyp…

Neural Correlates of Body Integrity Dysphoria.

There are few things as irrefutable as the evidence that our limbs belong to us. However, persons with body integrity dysphoria (BID) [1] deny the ownership of one of their fully functional limbs and seek its amputation [2]. We tapped into the brain mechanisms of BID, examining sixteen men desiring the removal of the left healthy leg. The primary sensorimotor area of the to-be-removed leg and the core area of the conscious representation of body size and shape (the right superior parietal lobule [rSPL]) [3, 4] were less functionally connected to the rest of the brain. Furthermore, the left pre

Sensitivity to change of scales assessing symptoms of bulimia nervosa.

Measures employed in a therapy study with a pre-post design must be sensitive to the detection of treatment-related changes. In the present study, the treatment sensitivity of 12 internationally established scales that assess bulimia-relevant aspects of eating and body concern is analyzed. The scales can be sorted along three dimensions (Disturbed Eating, Restrictive Eating Behaviors and Body Dissatisfaction). Measures of the same dimension were compared in a sample of 45 women with the diagnosis of bulimia nervosa. Patients completed the scales before and 6 weeks after the end of cognitive-be…

Virtual Reality Body Exposure Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa. A Case Report With Follow-Up Results.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure-based therapies such as mirror exposure may help to improve the results of classic cognitive behavioral therapy in anorexia nervosa (AN). Virtual reality (VR)-based procedures provide interesting novelties for targeting body-related concerns. This study aimed to provide preliminary evidence of the usefulness of a VR body exposure therapy in a patient diagnosed with AN. METHOD: Fear of gaining weight (FGW), body anxiety, drive for thinness, body image disturbances, body mass index and body-related attentional bias were assessed before and after the intervention, as well as

The Fitter I Am, the Larger I Feel-The Vicious Circle of Physical Exercise in Anorexia Nervosa.

Introduction: Body image distortion is a core symptom of anorexia nervosa (AN), embodying dissatisfaction and overvaluation of body appearance and weight. Body image distortion is an important factor in the maintenance of weight loss behaviours such as compulsive physical exercise. Conversely, physical exercise seems to have an aggravating effect on body image in patients with AN, but the evidence is still poor. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between body image distortion and physical exercise in AN in order to understand whether physical exercise may play a specific rol
