Demystifying the asymmetry-amplifying, autocatalytic behaviour of the Soai reaction through structural, mechanistic and computational studies.

The Soai reaction has profoundly impacted chemists' perspective of autocatalysis, chiral symmetry breaking, absolute asymmetric synthesis and its role in the origin of biological homochirality. Here we describe the unprecedented observation of asymmetry-amplifying autocatalysis in the alkylation of 5-(trimethylsilylethynyl)pyridine-3-carbaldehyde using diisopropylzinc. Kinetic studies with a surrogate substrate and spectroscopic analysis of a series of zinc alkoxides that incorporate specific structural mutations reveal a 'pyridine-assisted cube escape'. The new tetrameric cluster functions as

Composition of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.) honey solvent extractives determined by GC/MS: norisoprenoids and other volatile organic compounds.

Samples of unifloral sulla (Hedysarum coronarum L.) honey from Sardinia (Italy) were analysed. To investigate the chemical composition of the honey volatiles two solvent systems were used for ultrasonic solvent extraction (USE): 1) a 1:2 (v/v) pentane and diethyl ether mixture and 2) dichloromethane. All the extracts were analysed by GC and GC/MS. These procedures have permitted the identification of 56 compounds that include norisoprenoids, benzene derivatives, aliphatic compounds and Maillard reaction products. Norisoprenoids were the major compounds in both extracts, dominated by vomifoliol

Effects of hydroperoxides on contractile reactivity and free radical production of porcine brain arteries.

Hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress is assumed to be involved in vasospasm of cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage. In order to study underlying mechanisms the effects of H2O2 and tert butylhydroperoxide on contractile functions as well as on free radical production of anterior cerebral artery from pig were investigated. The hydroperoxides increased in a similar dose-dependent arterial contraction, however, the underlying mechanisms involve impairment of endothelial-dependent relaxation as well as of smooth muscle contractile function as shown by experiments with inhibited endoth

Concentration fluctuations in fluid mixtures. II.

The method developed in a previous paper [R. Mazo, J. Chem. Phys. 129, 154101 (2008)] for extracting information on the size of relative fluctuations in multicomponent systems is tested on ten binary systems and one ternary system. For the binary systems, it is found that the approximation works well for mole fractions in the range of 0.15-0.85 in most cases. For the ternary case, the method inherently yields less information and is valid only over a more restricted range for the case studied (chloroform-methanol-acetone). It is found that the predicted ratio of number fluctuations is approxim

Nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis with alcoholic background electrolytes: separation efficiency under high electrical field strengths.

The effect of high voltage on capillary electrophoresis (CE) separations of anionic analytes in nonaqueous separation media was investigated. Methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 1-butanol were tested as background electrolyte (BGE) solvents. Experiments were carried out with a laboratory-built CE instrument suitable for high-voltage separations. Potentials up to 60 kV were applied with reversed polarity to generate unusually high field strengths (e.g. 2000 Vcm-1) and so achieve fast and efficient separations. Highest separation efficiencies were obtained with propanol as BGE solvent, and the de

Quantification of Branched-Chain Alcohol-Based Biofuels and Other Fermentation Metabolites via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.

As the consequences of climate change become apparent, metabolic engineers and synthetic biologists are exploring sustainable sources for transportation fuels. The design and engineering of microorganisms to produce bio-gasoline and other biofuels from renewable feedstocks can significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels as well as lower the emissions of greenhouse gases. A significant amount of research over the past two decades has led to the development of microbial strains for the production of advanced fuel compounds. Crucial to these efforts are robust methods to quantify the amount o

Polymer-Supported Raney Nickel Catalysts for Sustainable Reduction Reactions.

Green is the future of chemistry. Catalysts with high selectivity are the key to green chemistry. Polymer-supported Raney catalysts have been found to have outstanding performance in the clean preparation of some chemicals. For example, a polyamide 6-supported Raney nickel catalyst provided a 100.0% conversion of n-butyraldehyde without producing any detectable n-butyl ether, the main byproduct in industry, and eliminated the two main byproducts (isopropyl ether and methyl-iso-butylcarbinol) in the hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol. Meanwhile, a model for how the polymer support brought

Vapor-phase analysis of isobutyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, n-propyl acetate and their respective alcohols using solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography with a mass selective detector.

A solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-GC-MS method for three esters and the corresponding alcohols was tested for responses in accuracy, within-run precision (repeatability), and between-run precision (reproducibility) due to individual operators, individual analysis days, and differing analyte concentrations. At 5 ppm (v/v) [ppmv], three of the six analytes showed significant (p < 0.05) operator effects, while five of six analytes gave a significant effect due to the days of analysis. At 20 ppmv, five of the six analytes gave significant operator and daily effects. At 100 ppmv, all the analyte

Rapid classical conditioning of odor response in a physiological model for olfactory research, the tiger salamander.

In recent years there have been a number of important advances in the understanding of cellular mechanisms related to olfactory function. Hypotheses regarding the complex relationships among odorant structure, physiological activity and behavioral outcome generated by these findings, however, remain largely untested due to a paucity of psychophysical data on stimulus discrimination in the same experimental species. Comparisons between behavioral and physiological responses are essential for elucidating the critical aspects of stimulus coding in sensory systems. We have developed a method for g

Selectivity of organic solvents in micellar liquid chromatography of amino acids and peptides.

The influence of the type of organic modifiers on retention behavior in micellar liquid chromatography is studied. A group of amino acids and small peptides was used as the test mixture. It is shown that the chromatographic selectivities of 2-propanol, acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran which belong to three different groups in Snyder's classification, are considerably similar in the presence of micelles for the test mixture. On the other hand, the selectivities of 2-propanol and butanol which belong to the same solvent selectivity group are different for these solutes in the micellar mobile pha

"Imposed" and "inherent" mucosal activity patterns. Their composite representation of olfactory stimuli.

Both regional differences in mucosal sensitivity and a gas chromatography-like process along the mucosal sheet have been separately proposed in two sets of earlier studies to produce different odorant-dependent activity patterns across the olfactory mucosa. This investigation evaluated, in one study, whether and to what degree these two mechanisms contribute to the generation of these activity patterns. Summated multiunit discharges were simultaneously recorded from lateral (LN) and medial (MN) sites on the bullfrog's olfactory nerve to sample the mucosal activity occurring near the internal a

Differential permeation of Artemia cysts and cucumber seeds by alcohols.

The rate of penetration of the simpler alcohols into brine shrimp cysts and cucumber seeds was studied. In solutions below 70% the rate of penetration is related to lipid solvent capacity of the alcohol. In concentrations above 70%, particularly in absolute alcohols, methanol penetrates brine shrimp rapidly and ethanol penetrates slowly. All the other alcohols tested did not pepetrate the dormant structures. Ethionine and deuteroxy-methanol did not affect the rate of penetration of methanol. It is suggested that in dehydrated membranes the lipid moiety is protected by a continuous sheet of pro

Antiamoebic activity of Piper longum fruits against Entamoeba histolytica in vitro and in vivo.

The fruits of Piper longum used in traditional remedies against intestinal distress have been tested for their efficacy against experimental caecal amoebiasis of rats. The ethanolic extract, hexane fraction, n-butanol soluble fraction exerted in vitro amoebicidal action at 1000 micrograms/mL and the chloroform fraction at 500 micrograms/mL. The ethanolic extract and piperine, a pure compound, from this plant material cured 90% and 40% of rats with caecal amoebiasis, respectively.

Dispersive wave and four-wave mixing generation in noninstantaneous nonlinear fiber solitons.

This paper presents a detailed analysis regarding the generation of a dispersive wave (DW) and four-wave mixing in the noninstantaneous, nonlinear response of solvents using a commercial photonic crystal fiber filled with carbon disulfide (CS2) where the beam is pumped in the anomalous dispersion domain. The main finding is the fact that the output spectrum changes from coherent DW to incoherent modulation instabilities just by changing from constant to variable nonlinear parameters. This study can be extended to other solvents including ethanol, methanol, and butanol.

Antibacterial activity of Quercus ilex bark's extracts.

The antibacterial activity of different extracts of Quercus ilex bark (Fagaceae) was studied in vitro against seven reference strains of bacteria by using a disc-diffusion method and agar-dilution method. The ethyl acetate extract (QE), n-butanol extract (QB) and final aqueous layer (QA) were effective against all bacterial strains tested at MICs ranging from 128 to 512 microg/ml. The n-hexane extract (QH) and dichloromethane extract (QD) showed no activity.

Quantitation of alcohols and acetone in postmortem blood and urine using headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry.

Traditionally, ethanol and related compounds have been analyzed by headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. However, this does not provide structural information, relying solely on retention time for identification. With a mass spectrometry (MS) detector, isotope labeled internal standards can be used, eliminating the risk associated with using internal standards like 1-propanol, that can be present in postmortem samples. Furthermore, the use of ion ratios for confirmation of identity eliminates the need for dual injections on columns with different selectivity. In additio

Comparative Analysis of Aroma Emissions in 'Gala' Apples Stored in Ethanol- and Hexanal-Enriched Controlled Atmosphere.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of extended and constant ethanol and hexanal exposure on 'Gala' apples' production of aroma compounds after long-term CA storage. 'Gala' apples were stored in a CA under 2 kPa O2 and 98 kPa N2 at 1.0 ± 0.1 °C with a constant ethanol (CA-et) or hexanal (CA-he) concentration maintained at 50 µgL-1 throughout a six-month storage period. A total of 25 volatile compounds (VOCs) were identified. The odor activity value (OAV) results show that nine VOCs were key aroma compounds. Among them, hexyl acetate, 2-methylbutyl acetate, and 1-butano
