In the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line, various mutations affecting DNA repair have been obtained. Mutants that belong to 5 genetic complementation groups for ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity and resemble the cells from individuals having the cancer-prone genetic disorder xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) were previously identified. Vaccinia Tian Tan (VTT) was used as a vaccine against smallpox in China for millions of people before 1980, yet the biological characteristics of the virus remain unclear. We have characterized VTT with respect to its host cell range, growth properties in vitro, and virulence in vivo. We found that 11 of the 12 mammalian cell lines studied are permissive to VTT infection whereas one, CHO-K1, is non-permissive. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cadherin-16 (CDH16, Ksp-cadherin) possesses unique seven extracellular cadherin repeats, and its expression is restricted to normal kidney epithelium. CDH16 is downregulated in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and is associated with poor prognosis.
