Cadmium exposure aggravates mortality more in women than in men.

This study aimed to examine whether the mortality associated with exposure to cadmium (Cd) differs between the sexes. Target subjects were 14,604 (6,944 men, 7,660 women) from a list of all residents in the Jinzu River basin in 1967 and 1968. Trend of proportion of the population aged 70 years and older was significantly higher in women in the following decreasing order: non-Jinzu River basin, a region receiving a mixed water supply, and the Jinzu River basin. Sex ratios (proportions of population of men to that of women) in those aged 70 years and older became significantly higher in the same…

Interactions between different selenium compounds and zinc, cadmium and mercury.

In this paper, we present a polarographic study of systems containing different inorganic and organic selenium compounds (sodium selenite, sodium selenate, seleno-methionine and seleno-urea) and metal ions (Zn2+, Cd2+ Hg2+) of the 12th group of elements in the periodic table. While zinc is a trace element known to be essential for plants and animals, cadmium and mercury are exogenous elements and are harmful pollutants that accumulate during aging; selenium is also recognized as an important micronutrient and is sometimes added to the diet. Experiments investigating the interactions were carri…

Cadmium sulfide nanocluster-based electrochemical stripping detection of DNA hybridization.

A novel, sensitive electrochemical DNA hybridization detection assay, using cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoclusters as the oligonucleotide labeling tag, is described. The assay relies on the hybridization of the target DNA with the CdS nanocluster oligonucleotide DNA probe, followed by the dissolution of the CdS nanoclusters anchored on the hybrids and the indirect determination of the dissolved cadmium ions by sensitive anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) at a mercury-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The results showed that only a complementary sequence could form a double-stranded dsDNA-CdS w…

Metallothionein gene expression in peripheral lymphocytes from cadmium-exposed workers.

Metallothionein (MT) plays an important role in the detoxification of cadmium. To investigate the usefulness of MT gene expression in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) as a biomarker of cadmium exposure and susceptibility, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the MT gene expression in PBLs from cadmium-exposed workers. Both basal and induced MT expressions were found to increase with increased blood cadmium (BCd) and urinary cadmium (UCd) levels. Both basal and induced MT expression levels were significantly correlated with the logarithm of BCd and the logarith…

Blood cadmium and lead levels among school children in Cracow.

An assessment of school children's exposure to cadmium and lead was carried out in Cracow and in a rural area in the years 1987-1989. The metal concentrations were determined in blood, which seems to be the best indicator of recent and current exposure. Simultaneously the levels of cadmium and lead in the air and dust-fall were measured. The study included 431 urban children aged about 12, living in two quarters of Cracow: the old central part of the city with high traffic density (Sródmieście) and the modern part close to the steel and iron plant (Nowa Huta). The rural control group was compo…

Stress protein synthesis induced by cadmium-cysteine in rat kidney.

Biomarkers are important tools which enable toxicologists to reliably predict and detect exposures to xenobiotics and resultant cell injury, ultimately improving risk assessments. Since the de novo synthesis of stress proteins can be detected early after exposure to some agents, analysis of toxicant-induced changes in gene expression, i.e. alterations in patterns of protein synthesis, may be useful to develop as biomarkers of exposure and toxicity. We are utilizing various xenobiotics as tools to study stress protein synthesis in target organs in order to evaluate the target tissue-specificity

Very low cadmium concentrations stimulate DNA synthesis and cell growth.

Uptake of cadmium into cultured cells and its effects on cell growth and DNA synthesis are measured over a range of Cd concentrations of seven orders of magnitude. Cd uptake is found to be proportional to the external Cd concentration and to incubation time over a very broad range of concentrations. At least 200 mmol cadmium per kg dry weight of cells can be accumulated in this way, leading to exhaustion of the major intracellular Cd binding sites before cell death. On the other hand, very low cadmium concentrations down to 100 pM stimulate cell growth and DNA synthesis significantly. Stimulat…

Elevated urinary excretion of metallothionein due to environmental cadmium exposure.

Metallothionein, a low molecular weight cadmium-binding protein, has been determined for the first time in urine of "itai-itai" disease patients and other Japanese women environmentally exposed to cadmium. On a group basis, the urinary metallothionein levels of "itai-itai" disease patients and suspected patients were significantly higher than that of women living in a cadmium-polluted area. Women living in a non-polluted area excreted significantly less metallothionein than women living in a cadmium-polluted area. A similar trend was observed for urinary beta 2-microglobulin, a nonspecific ind…

Methyl Jasmonate and Sodium Nitroprusside Jointly Alleviate Cadmium Toxicity in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Plants by Modifying Nitrogen Metabolism, Cadmium Detoxification, and AsA-GSH Cycle.

UNLABELLED: The principal intent of the investigation was to examine the influence of joint application of methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 10 μM) and a nitric oxide-donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 100 μM) to wheat plants grown under cadmium (Cd as CdCl2, 100 μM) stress. Cd stress suppressed plant growth, chlorophylls (Chl), and PSII maximum efficiency (F v /F m ), but it elevated leaf and root Cd, and contents of leaf proline, phytochelatins, malondialdehyde, and hydrogen peroxide, as well as the activity of lipoxygenase. MeJA and SNP applied jointly or singly improved the concentrations of key antio…

Relationship between the development of hepato-renal toxicity and cadmium accumulation in rats given minimum to large amounts of cadmium chloride in the long-term: preliminary study.

We wished to clarify the relationship between the sensitivity to induce hepato-renal toxicity and the level of cadmium (Cd) in the organs of rats exposed to minimum to large amounts of cadmium chloride (CdCl2). For this purpose, groups of female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, each consisting of 24 animals, were fed diet containing CdCl2 at concentrations of 0, 8, 40, 200, and 600 ppm for 2, 4, and 8 months from 5 weeks of age. All surviving rats given 600 ppm Cd were killed at 4 months because of deterioration of their general condition. Animals of this group showed anemia and decreased hematopoies…

Increased absorption of and sensitivity to cadmium during late pregnancy: is there a relationship between markedly decreased maternal cadmium binding protein (metallothionein) and pregnancy-induced hypertension?

Laboratory animals have a unique sensitivity to cadmium toxicity in late pregnancy. This acute toxicity is not seen in non-pregnant, early pregnant, or lactating animals. Furthermore, during late pregnancy, laboratory animals absorb and retain substantially more cadmium from their diets than they do in the non-pregnant state. Both of these observations parallel the fact that a fivefold late gestational drop of maternal metallothionein (a metal-binding protein believed to detoxify cadmium) has been demonstrated in pregnant animals. Additional factors such as nutritional status and age affect ca…

Mechanistic links between cadmium and MAPK pathways leading to neurodegeneration.

Cadmium, a Group 1 carcinogen, represents a significant public health concern due to its widespread environmental distribution and exposure through industrial processes, contaminated water, dietary intake, and tobacco use. Prolonged cadmium exposure is associated with systemic toxicity, including neurodegenerative outcomes mediated by oxidative stress, protein misfolding, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Disruption of autophagy and MAPK signalling pathways (ERK, JNK, and P38) further impairs neuronal function. Cadmium-induced misfolding of key proteins such as tau, amyloid-β, …

Global cereal trade drives bidirectional cadmium redistribution across income groups.

Cadmium governance assumes that controlling contamination where cereals are grown is sufficient to protect consumers, yet how international trade redistributes this exposure remains unquantified. Here we reconstruct four-decade (1980-2023) national cadmium concentration time series for rice, wheat and corn from 182,873 grain measurements across 55 countries using crop-specific random forest models, and couple them with bilateral trade flows to quantify trade-embedded cadmium-the fraction of dietary exposure originating from imports rather than domestic production. Three transmission pathways o…

Facet and crystallinity-dependent transformation of lepidocrocite impacts cadmium redistribution.

In redoximorphic soils and sediments, cadmium (Cd) fate is governed by Fe(II)-induced transformation of metastable iron oxides. Lepidocrocite (Lep), a ubiquitous intermediate in such environments, commonly exhibits plate-like (P-Lep) or rod-like (R-Lep) morphologies with distinct exposed facet ratios and crystallinity. These structural variations engender differential Fe(II) adsorption affinities and electron transfer capacities, thereby influencing mineralogical transformation pathways and associated Cd redistribution. Herein, we investigated the transformation of Cd-adsorbed P-Lep and R-Lep …

Deep-lying semi-Dirac fermions in hexagonal close-packed cadmium.

Semi-Dirac fermions are massless in one direction and massive in the perpendicular directions. Such quasiparticles have been proposed in various contexts in condensed matter. Using first principles calculations, we identify a pair of semi-Dirac bands anti-crossing at -3 eV below the Fermi level in the electronic structure of hexagonal close-packed cadmium. The linear out-of-plane dispersion is kept up to the Fermi level. We demonstrate that the dichotomy between the linear and quadratic dispersions is driven by an orientation-sensitive hybridization between thesandpzorbitals. The upper semi-Di…

Cadmium induces spontaneous abortion by impairing endometrial stromal cell decidualization.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal with a high propensity to accumulate within the body, and Cd accumulation has been shown to cause organ damage. However, it is unclear whether Cd accumulation is a cause of impaired decidualization, which induces to spontaneous abortion (SA). In this study, we found that the decidual Cd concentration was increased in patients with SA and positively correlated with the occurrence of SA. The levels of two decidualization markers (prolactin, PRL and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1, IGFBP1) were reduced in the decidua of all-cause SA patients. Using…

Tunneling Nanotube-Mediated Transcellular Autophagy Alleviates Cadmium Induced Hepatocyte Injury.

Cadmium (Cd) exposure is strongly linked to various diseases and dysregulation of autophagy is a pivotal mechanism in Cd toxicity. Targeted autophagy strategies are promising for the treatment of autophagy dysregulation-related diseases, including Cd poisoning. However, the current understanding of autophagy mechanisms remains limited, hindering the development of effective strategies. Herein, a novel autophagy pathway, transcellular autophagy. Cd triggers this process in hepatocytes, facilitating the transfer of autophagosomes from damaged to healthy cells for degradation. Mechanistically, re…

Potential pathological mechanisms and pharmacological interventions for cadmium-induced miscarriage.

The prevalence of cadmium (Cd) contamination has emerged as a significant global concern. Exposure to Cd during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive summaries on Cd-induced miscarriage. Therefore, it is imperative to further strengthen research into in vivo studies, clinical status, pathological mechanisms, and pharmacological interventions for Cd-induced miscarriage. This study systematically presents the current knowledge on animal models and clinical trials investigating Cd exposure-induced miscar…
