A single dose of 0.5 to 1 mg/kg of Pentamidine led to clinical recovery of splenectomised calves infected with Babesia bigemina. On the other hand as much as 5 mg/kg administered during patency did not destroy the carrier state in intact calves. The fact that the sterilising dose was at least five times as great as that needed for clinical recovery makes Pentamidine a promising agent for chemoimmunisation against B. bigemina infection.

Many countries have implemented infection control measures directed at carriers of multidrug-resistant organisms. BACKGROUND: Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is typically caused by homozygosity for an expanded GAA triplet-repeat (GAA-TRE) in intron 1 of the FXN gene. Some patients are compound heterozygous for the GAA-TRE and another FXN pathogenic variant. Detection of the GAA-TRE in the heterozygous state, occasionally technically challenging, is essential for diagnosing compound heterozygotes and asymptomatic carriers.
OBJECTIVE: We explored if the FRDA differentially methylated region (FRDA-DMR) in intron 1, which is hypermethylated in cis with the GAA-TRE, effectively detects heterozygous GAA-TRE.

Colloidal branched nanocrystals have been attracting increasing attention due to evidence of an interesting relationship between their complex shape and charge carrier dynamics. Herein, continuous wave photoinduced absorption (CW PIA) measurements of CdSe/CdS octapod-shaped nanocrystals are reported. Clostridium difficile enterocolitis is endemic in most modern hospitals. The spectrum of clinical presentation varies from the asymptomatic carrier state to fulminant colitis with toxic megacolon and perforation. Highly toxigenic and lethal strains of C. difficile have emerged worldwide. Medical treatment consists of discontinuing the precipitating antibiotic, supportive measures and bowel rest, and antibiotic treatment with metronidazole or vancomycin. Surgical treatment may be necessary in cases of fulminant disease. Subtotal colectomy with end ileostomy is the operation of choice.
