The potential waves evoked in the caudate nucleus (CN) of cats by stimulation of the cerebral neocortex were sterotactically recorded. The head and the body of the caudate nucleus were systematically explored. Stimulation of the ipsilateral sigmoid gyrus and the orbitofrontal cortex evoked waves with the largest amplitude in the CN. Smaller potentials were evoked from the ipsilateral ectosylvian and suprasylvian gyri and from the sigmoid gyrus on the contralateral side. An experimentally controlled compression of the facial nerve was induced in 32 cats by applying polyethylene tubes of different diameter on its main trunk. Ventilation while breathing air and in response to hypoxia was studied in unanesthetized cats after carotid body chemo-defferentation. Hypoxic exposure (FIO2 equal to 0.07-0.12) of chemo-deafferented animals rapidly produced a high frequency, low tidal volume tachypnea. This histopathological study on cats has shown that electrodes may be implanted into the cochlea through the round window or an opening drilled over the middle and apical turns without loss of the spiral ganglion cells or auditory nerve fibres. It has also shown that infection, leading to a labyrinthitis, was more likely to occur when an opening was drilled in the cochlea, and this could lead to a marked destruction of the cochlear structures, and loss of the spiral ganglion cells.

Adverse food reactions (AFRs) are a frequent cause of chronic pruritus and gastrointestinal disease in dogs and cats. They include immunologic (allergic) and nonimmunologic reactions, with diagnosis remaining challenging due to nonspecific clinical signs.
