Gastritis varioliformis. Chronic erosive gastritis with protein-losing gastropathy.

A patient with chronic erosive gastritis and protein-losing gastropathy is reported. Presentation was with weight loss and abdominal discomfort. There were endoscopic and radiological features of erosive gastritis. Radioactive chromium studies confirmed that the low serum albumin was associated with fecal protein loss. No improvement occurred with bed rest or Caved S but coincided with DeNol therapy.

Subterranean biodiversity and depth distribution of myriapods in forested scree slopes of Central Europe.

The shallow underground of rock debris is a unique animal refuge. Nevertheless, the research of this habitat lags far behind the study of caves and soil, due to technical and time-consuming demands. Data on Myriapoda in scree habitat from eleven localities in seven different geomorphological units of the Czech and Slovak Republics were processed. Based on previous studies, as well as knowledge of cave and soil fauna, it was hypothesised that the occurrence of a varied and peculiar fauna would show a pattern of depth distribution with variations due to local specificities. From 2005-2016 (at le…

Friction reduction mechanism of the cuticle surface in the sandhopper talitrus saltator (Amphipoda, talitridae).

In many cases, strong friction reduction is critical for success of both living organisms and engineering systems. Some arthropods exhibit g … ticle, especially for the alive and rewet sandhopper shells. The shell consists of bottle-like nano-caves in its exocuticle, nano-tubes in its mesocuticle, and gauze-like multilayers in its endocuticle. Under physiological conditions, glycoprotein-like fluid fillings exist in both the bottle-like caves and the nano-tubes below and cover on the shell sur …

Behavioural changes controlled by catecholaminergic systems explain recurrent loss of pigmentation in cavefish.

Multiple cave populations of the teleost Astyanax mexicanus have repeatedly reduced or lost eye and body pigmentation during adaptation to dark caves. Albinism, the complete absence of melanin pigmentation, is controlled by loss-of-function mutations in the oca2 gene. The mutation is accompanied by an increase in the melanin synthesis precursor l-tyrosine, which is also a precursor for catecholamine synthesis. In this study, we show a relationship between pigmentation loss, enhanced catecholamine synthesis and responsiveness to anaesthesia, determined as a proxy for catecholamine-related behav…

Complex alpine extrication: case report of mountain and speleological rescue cooperation.

Mountain sporting activities are an increasingly popular practice that exposes mountaineers to a high risk of adverse events. This report describes a unique case of recovery in an austere environment that involved explosives. In June 2012, a 52-year-old man ascended a cliff tower in the Eastern Alps, Italy. A landslide occurred, and a boulder crushed the climber against a large stone located farther down the cliff, causing compression of the lower limbs and the pelvis with consequent severe musculoskeletal trauma. The National Alpine and Cave Rescue Unit (NACRU) arrived and proceeded with stab

Trigeminal neuropathy: evaluation with MR imaging.

Neuropathy of the trigeminal nerve can involve its full course, from its nuclei in the brain stem to its peripheral branches. The nerve can be divided into four segments--brain stem, cistern, the Meckel cave and cavernous sinus, and extracranial--and consideration of the pathologic entities by these locations simplifies the differential diagnosis. Multiple sclerosis, infarct, and glioma are the most common abnormalities in the brain stem leading to trigeminal neuropathy. The most common cisternal cause is neurovascular compression, followed by acoustic and trigeminal schwannomas, meningiomas,

Fibrosing pseudotumor of the sella and parasellar area producing hypopituitarism and multiple cranial nerve palsies.

We present an unusual patient with a medical history of a fibrosing pseudotumor of the left orbit that had been stable for 8 years who presented with acute anterior hypophyseal failure. During the next 10-month period, sequential magnetic resonance scans showed a rapid growth of a plaque-like sellar and parasellar mass extending into the right cavernous sinus, right Meckel's cave, along the dural surfaces of the clivus, dens, and body of the second cervical vertebra. A transsphenoidal biopsy revealed sphenoid and intrasellar pseudotumor that invaded the adenohypophysis and had microscopic feat

Evolution of an adaptive behavior and its sensory receptors promotes eye regression in blind cavefish.

BACKGROUND: How and why animals lose eyesight during adaptation to the dark and food-limited cave environment has puzzled biologists since the time of Darwin. More recently, several different adaptive hypotheses have been proposed to explain eye degeneration based on studies in the teleost Astyanax mexicanus, which consists of blind cave-dwelling (cavefish) and sighted surface-dwelling (surface fish) forms. One of these hypotheses is that eye regression is the result of indirect selection for constructive characters that are negatively linked to eye development through the pleiotropic effects

Rabies encephalitis.

Rabies is an almost always fatal disease that physicians and patients dread due to its dismal prognosis and limited treatment options. Transmission of this disease occurs through the bite of dogs and wild animals (like jackal in our case). Other rare forms of transmission may be through inhalation in bat-infested caves and human-to-human transmission by infected corneal transplants, solid organ and tissue transplantation, and sometimes in laboratory settings. Its diagnosis is usually clinical in the absence of availability of special laboratory investigations at the point-of-care facility. Few…

Prevention of distortion of vascular deprivation-induced osteonecrosis of the rat femoral head by treatment with alendronate.

INTRODUCTION: In animals with a disrupted blood supply and drainage of the femoral head, the dead epiphyseal bone undergoes osteoclastic osteolysis and is replaced by newly synthesized, immature, and weak bone, which cannot withstand the daily loads and, therefore, the articular surface caves in. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats with interrupted blood circulation of the femoral head were treated with alendronate and compared to controls. RESULTS: There was no distortion of the femoral heads in the alendronate-treated animals. INTERPRETATION: Alendronate medication interferes with osteocl…

The deformation characteristics and the prefabricated crack pressure relief stability control of a small coal pillar roadway under stress superposition.

The substantial pressure acting on small coal pillars poses a formidable challenge to maintaining stability during mining operations. Small coal pillar mining under high-stress conditions has thus emerged as one of the most critical bottlenecks in sustainable coal production. In this study, the deformation characteristics of a small coal pillar roadway under stress superposition were investigated via numerical simulation. Physical modeling was further employed to elucidate the impact of prefabricated roof crack on the migration behavior of overlying strata, alongside the development of a press

A novel surgical strategy for trigeminal neuralgia associated with vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia: nerve rerouting via the anterior transpetrosal approach. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) caused by vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia is challenging due to severe arteriosclerosis of the offending vessel, and is often associated with poor improvement of the symptoms, recurrence, and increased risk of complications. The authors describe a novel method of treatment: rerouting the trigeminal nerve and not manipulating the offending vessels. OBSERVATIONS: A 50-year-old male presented with a 7-year history of TN. MRI showed that the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) was strongly compressing the trigeminal nerve

Cavum trigeminale cephalocele associated with intracranial hypertension in an 18-month-old child: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cavum trigeminale cephaloceles (CTCs) are characterized by a cystic appearance and extension of the posterolateral aspect of Meckel's cave into the superomedial portion of the petrous apex. A possible mechanism is a transient or sustained increase of intracranial pressure transmitted to Meckel's cave, leading to its secondary herniation, in the presence of predisposing local factors. The majority of CTCs are incidental findings. Among symptomatic cases, headache, trigeminal neuralgia, cerebrospinal fluid leak, vertigo, ataxia, facial numbness, hearing loss, diplopia, and other visu

Automated Measurements of Sleep and Locomotor Activity in Mexican Cavefish.

Across phyla, sleep is characterized by highly conserved behavioral characteristics that include elevated arousal threshold, rebound following sleep deprivation, and consolidated periods of behavioral immobility. The Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus (A. mexicanus), is a model for studying trait evolution in response to environmental perturbation. A. mexicanus exist as in eyed surface-dwelling forms and multiple blind cave-dwelling populations that have robust morphological and behavioral differences. Sleep loss has occurred in multiple, independently-evolved cavefish populations. This prot

A Natural Animal Model System of Craniofacial Anomalies: The Blind Mexican Cavefish.

Natural model systems evolving under extreme environmental pressures provide the opportunity to advance our knowledge of how the craniofacial complex evolves in nature. Unlike traditional models, natural systems are less inbred, and, therefore, better model the complex variation of the human population. Owing to the nature of certain craniofacial aberrations in blind Mexican cavefish, we suggest that this organism can provide new insights to a variety of craniofacial changes. Diverse cranial features have evolved in natural cave-dwelling Astyanax fish, which have thrived in the unforgiving dar

Chordoma mimicking the trigeminal schwannoma: a case report.

Intracranial chordomas are rare tumor arising from the remnants of embryologic notochord. Bony destruction and tumor calcification are their characters. Now we represent an extra-axial tumor with an unusual dumbbell shape in the right Meckel's cave and the appearance mimics the trigeminal schwannomas. However, the histopathological findings reveal a chordoma. Bony destruction in the right petrous bone and clivus provides a hint to make appropriate diagnosis.

Trigeminal schwannoma associated with pathological laughter and crying.

A 46 year old man with trigeminal schwannoma displayed symptoms of ataxia with pathological laughter and crying. The tumour developed in the cerebellopontine angle, compressing the pontomesencephalic structures backward, extending in the posterior parasellar region and Meckel's cave. No recurrence of laughter and crying attacks were noted after total removal of the tumour. Theories of mechanism of pathological laughter and crying reported in the literature are reviewed.
