Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) activation-induced hepatomegaly is accompanied by hepatocyte hypertrophy around the central vein (CV) area and hepatocyte proliferation around the portal vein (PV) area. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this spatial change of hepatocytes remains unclear. In this study, we examined the characteristics and possible reasons for the zonation distinction of hypertrophy and proliferation during PPARα activation-induced mouse liver enlargement. Mice were injected with corn oil or a typical mouse PPARα agonist WY-14643 (100 mg·kg-1·d

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disorder of the exocrine glands presenting with progressive ocular and oral dryness, parotid gland enlargement, and often with extraglandular manifestations. In this group of patients the risk of development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is 16-fold compared to healthy population, mainly of the MALT lymphoma type. This case reports a 52-year-old woman with pSS developing a progressively growing mass at face and neck compatible with blastoid variant mantle cell lymphoma and a fatal outcome.

A histological, histochemical and morphometric study was performed on submandibular salivary glands from 13 dogs which had presented with a submandibular mass or swelling that proved to be a portion of non-inflammatory and non-neoplastic submandibular salivary gland. There were no consistent changes in lectin-binding histochemistry or immunohistochemical expression of various cell markers, and, in most cases, there was no measurable difference in acinar size in the affected gland. The possible explanation for the clinical salivary gland enlargement is therefore unclear.

Megacolon occurs in neonatal and adult transgenic mice that overexpress the Hoxa-4 gene. Abnormalities, which are restricted to the terminal colon of these mice, include a hypoganglionosis, abnormal enteric ganglia with a structure appropriate for extra-enteric peripheral nerve and not the enteric nervous system (ENS), and gaps in the longitudinal muscle occupied by ganglia. To investigate the developmental origin of these abnormalities, we analyzed the development of the pelvis and terminal colon in Hoxa-4 transgenic mice. Morphological abnormalities were detected as early as E13. These inclu

Splenic diffuse red pulp small B-cell lymphoma (SDRPL) is a rare B-cell tumor whose genetic characteristics are poorly understood. Here, we introduce the case of a 62-year-old patient with SDRPL who showed progressive elevation of lymphocytes and progressive spleen enlargement. Immunohistochemistry showed that CD20 and CD79a were positive, and the Ki-67 labelling index was approximately 5%, consistent with the pathological features of splenic B-cell lymphoma. Spleen tissue and peripheral blood samples from the patient were sequenced using a next-generation sequencing platform, and mutations po

A 29-year-old woman was diagnosed as having pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) in 1983. Her serum and IgG inhibited erythroid colony formation of bone marrow cells from a normal individual, suggesting antibody-mediated suppression of erythropoiesis. She was first successfully treated with corticosteroids, azathiopurine and cyclophosphamide. However, she relapsed in 1995 and her anemia became refractory to immunosuppressive therapy. In 1998, she developed systemic lymph node enlargement and was diagnosed as having B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma. Combination chemotherapy resulted in regression of t

We report on a girl with central diabetes insipidus, growth hormone deficiency and bone lesions in multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Thickening of the pituitary stalk was detected by magnetic resonance imaging, which progressed over the course of the disease. During the observation period she developed primary hypothyroidism, which might be due to the extremely rare involvement of the thyroid gland in this disease. The girl underwent chemotherapy, which led to a regression of the Langerhans cell histiocytosis-lesion, but the hormone deficiencies persisted and substitution had to be co

In adult patients with Leydig cell tumor of the testis, endocrinologic signs occur in 30 per cent of the cases and often precede the onset of a palpable testicular mass. Gynecomastia is the most common endocrinologic manifestation and probably is due to increased estrogen secretion by the Leydig cells. In the patient with adrenogenital syndrome and testicular enlargement it is difficult to distinguish Leydig cell tumor from adrenal rest hypertrophy. Four patients with Leydig cell tumor and endocrinologic manifestations are discussed; three are adults who presented with gynecomastia and the fou

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid (PSCCT) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all thyroid malignancies. Its incidence is higher in females in their fifth and sixth decades of life. The pathophysiology of PSCCT is still a subject of debate as squamous cells are generally absent in the thyroid gland under normal physiologic conditions. Immunohistochemistry is important for reaching a definite diagnosis as it helps to differentiate PSCCT from metastases from other primary sites. Clinically, PSCCT usually presents as a rapidly enlarging anterior neck ma

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of neoplasia which affects the mucosa of the upper aero-digestive tract. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a unique disease with clinical behavior, epidemiology, and histopathology that is different from that of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. For malignant tumors such as SCC, rapid growth may occur even though there are no previous clinical signs. Enlargement of a cervical lymph node, as the first presenting feature of neoplasia, is not uncommon, particularly with certain "silent" site, such as nasopharynx. Therefore, clinical examinati

A nine-year-old, female, neutered golden retriever was referred for investigation of weakness. Immune-mediated polymyositis with mixed mononuclear cell inflammation and fibrosis was diagnosed in muscle biopsy specimens from several sites. A soft tissue opacity was noted radiographically cranial to the cardiac silhouette. The dog failed to respond to treatment with prednisolone and was euthanased. At post-mortem examination, the structure observed radiographically was showed to be an enlarged right atrium. Histopathological examination of samples collected at post-mortem confirmed polymyositis.

The clinical and laboratory data, and histologic, electron microscopic and immunocytochemical findings of a carcinoid tumor of the lung associated with parathyroid hyperplasia and persistent hypercalcemia are described. The carcinoid tumor consists of uniform cuboidal cells with regular round vesicular nuclei and eosinophilic granular cytoplasm. The tumor cells were chromogranin and neuron-specific enolase positive. The CAT scan of the abdomen revealed an adrenal mass, 3 cm in diameter, and an enlarged body in the pancreas. Our patient is still suffering from hypercalcemia and renal colic, des

Electron microscope observations on enlarged hypertrophied salivary glands dissected from adult laboratory-reared male Glossina morsitans morsitans show a concurrent infection of the salivary gland tissue with rod-shaped virus particles and intracellular rickettsia-like organisms. The latter are found intracellular in the epithelium and in the gland lumen enclosed within lytic zones. The virus particles are found within the degenerating cytoplasm, nuclei, and lumen of the cell where they are especially numerous. Stratified epithelium and gland enlargement are a prominent feature of the infecti

Spontaneous acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL-SD) was diagnosed in a breeding colony of isohistogenic Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals younger than one year of age died approximately 1 to 2 weeks after the onset of the disease and represented approximately 17% of the total rat population. Clinically, the affected rats showed mainly spinal cord paralysis and enlargement of mandibular lymph nodes. Gross lesions were characterized by hepatosplenomegaly and enlargement of visceral lymph nodes. Histological examination of affected tissues and cells revealed generalized infiltration of blast cells accom

Nine cases of lymphoblastic leukemia were observed in 4,500 guinea pigs from three guinea pig production colonies during a period of 3 years. Seven of the cases occurred in strain 2/N, one in 13/N and one in Dunkin-Hartley/FD. These guinea pigs were 5.5-29 months old and included two males and seven females. Clinically, the animals showed a variety of signs, such as enlargement of peripheral lymph nodes, posterior paralysis and terminal ataxia. Gross lesions were characterized by numerous white spots and enlargement of the lymph nodes and many internal organs. Hematologic examination showed le

The patient was a 73-year-old man diagnosed with low-grade B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified based on a biopsy of the enlarged cervical lymph nodes. He remained untreated and was monitored during follow-up visits only. Progressive anemia developed after 5 years. Enteroscopy revealed stricture and ulcerative lesions involving the entire circumference of the middle section of the small intestine. Based on the biopsy results, he was diagnosed with enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL). Biopsy of an enlarged axillary lymph node simultaneously revealed Epstein-Barr virus-negative diff

1. The antitumour effect of orally administered cordycepin, a component isolated from water extracts of Cordyceps sinensis, was examined in mice inoculated with B16 melanoma (B16-BL6) cells. 2. B16-BL6 (1 x 10(6)) cells were inoculated subcutaneously into the right footpad of mice. At 2 weeks after the cell inoculation, the enlarged primary tumour lump was weighed. Cordycepin (0, 5 and 15 mg/kg per day) was administered orally to the mice for 2 weeks from the date of tumour inoculation. Cordycepin (15 mg/kg per day) significantly reduced by 36% the wet weight of the primary tumour lump compare

Acute splenic sequestration crisis (ASSC) is a rare complication in adults with sickle cell disease that is diagnosed clinically by means of sudden splenic enlargement and a rapid fall in hematocrit. Two cases of ASSC in adults with heterozygous sickle cell disease (sickle cell-thalassemia and sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease) were studied with use of duplex Doppler ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. In both cases, US showed patency of the splenic vein and multiple hypoechoic lesions on the periphery of an enlarged spleen that were of low attenuatio

Tissue-specific (or somatic) stem cells constitute a subset of cells residing in normal adult tissues. By undergoing asymmetric division, they retain their ability to self-renew while producing daughter cells that go on to differentiate and play a role in tissue regeneration and repair. The human uterus consists primarily of endometrium and myometrium (the smooth muscle layer) that rapidly enlarges through its tremendous regenerative and remodeling capacity to accommodate the developing fetus. Such uterine enlargement and remodeling can take place repeatedly and cyclically over the course of a

Androgens have been implicated in mediating disease escalation in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an agonist, and flutamide (FLT), an antagonist, were administered to Han:SPRD rats with ADPKD, and the role of androgen receptor (AR) abundance and activation on the enlargement and function of cystic kidneys was evaluated. Renal AR abundance determined by immunoblots in 8- to 10-wk-old Cy/+ male rats was naturally increased four-fold above that of littermate +/+ controls. In male Cy/+, castration decreased AR abundance below control +/+ by -89.4%,
