Fifty-seven cemented total hip arthroplasties (THAs) were reviewed in cases of osteoarthrosis secondary to congenital dysplasia or dislocation. The bearing surface of the prosthesis used in this series consists of a polyethylene acetabular component on an alumina ceramic head. All acetabular components were positioned at the same level as the original acetabulum, and an autologous femoral head graft was performed for 18 hips. In the present study, the adhesive strength of glass-ionomer cement (GIC) for bracket bonding is analysed in relation to the surface characteristics of the enamel. The bonding of brackets to the enamel of impacted teeth as well as erupted teeth of adolescents and adults is determined in shear force experiments. Between 1976 and 1982, 126 low friction arthroplasties were implanted in primary arthrosis of the hip. The displacement rate or acetabular loosening related to the type osteoblastic response to the disease were studied. A study of the data on 1,318 consecutive non-cemented total hip-replacement arthroplasties revealed thirty-nine intraoperative fractures of the femur (3 per cent), only half of which were diagnosed intraoperatively. In a study of the mortality experience of 6931 employees of two New Orleans asbestos cement products manufacturing plants over 95% were traced. Chrysotile was the primary fibre used in both plants. Sets of thermoprobe measurements of the temperature of the bone-cement interface were made during twenty total joint-replacement procedures.
