Ultrasound prenatal diagnosis of the Nail-Patella syndrome.

The Nail-Patella syndrome (NPS) is an autosomal dominant connective-tissue disorder characterized by the absence or hypoplasia of the nails and patella, posterior illiac horns, elbow deformities, congenital nephropathy cervical ribs and eye problems. The presence of the posterior iliac horns is pathognomonic and have been observed in more than 80 per cent of cases. In this report, we present the first case of prenatal diagnosis of NPS by ultrasound. The possible kidney involvement, combined with other, milder, complications make the prenatal diagnosis of this syndrome worthwhile.

Endovascular Reconstruction of Subclavian Artery Aneurysms in Patients with Arterial Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Subclavian artery aneurysms associated with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) have traditionally been managed by open surgical reco … limb-threatening ischemia (6). Other significant findings included subclavian artery aneurysm (7), cervical rib (4), and clavicular fracture (3). TOS decompression was accomplished via transaxillary cervical and first rib resection. Stent-graft deployment was performed concurrently with TOS decompression via brachial artery approach. The mean follow-up period …

Occipitocervical fusion in an infant with atlantooccipital dislocation.

BACKGROUND: For children who survive traumatic atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD), early surgical stabilization and arthrodesis of the occipitoatlantoaxial complex is typically performed. Because of the unique and crowded anatomy of the occipitocervical junction, the creation of a fusion construct that is both safe and biomechanically sound is extremely challenging, especially in infants. We present a technical report of a patient with infantile type I AOD with gross instability, who underwent surgical stabilization consisting of occiput to C2 arthrodesis using autologous rib, augmented with b

Unlikely cause of primary upper limb venous thrombosis.

Primary upper limb venous thrombosis is a rare disease usually caused by external compression of the proximal deep upper limb veins from aberrant musculoskeletal anatomy such as cervical ribs, abnormal tendon insertions and hypertrophy of the anterior scalene or subclavius muscles. We present an unusual case of primary upper limb thrombosis caused by compression of the brachiocephalic vein from a sternoclavicular ganglion cyst. This case illustrates the importance of considering a wide differential when searching for a cause of primary upper limb venous thrombosis.

[Congenital brachyury and vertebral malformations in a White Polled Heath].

In a female White Polled Heath a congenital shortening and abnormal bending of the tail was observed. The trunk appeared to be shortened and almost quadratic. However, further findings could not be ascertained in the general clinical, neurological and orthopaedic examination. Maceration of the trunk skeleton showed vertebral fusion in several segments of the vertebral column and a wedge-shaped vertebra of the cervical spine, causing slight scoliosis. In addition, several ribs were fused. Exogenic causes such as drugs or viral infections during pregnancy were unlikely, whereas hereditary could

Thoracic outlet syndrome: a narrative review.

The Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) results from compression of the brachial plexus, the subclavian artery and the subclavian vein in the thoracic outlet region. This compression may take place between the clavicle and the first rib or by a number of anatomical variations. Neurological compression is the most common form of thoracic outlet syndrome. Vascular complications occur infrequently. Arterial complications usually result from compression of the subclavian artery by a complete cervical rib. Venous complications are often related to muscle compression of the subclavian vein. The neurogeni…

Early development of the costovertebral joints.

Researches on the development of the vertebral column were focused mainly on the growth of lumbar and cervical regions. However, none of them were related to the development of costovertebral joints. To our knowledge, the relationship between ribs and thoracic vertebrae has never been addressed. The aims of the presented study are: (1) to trace the formation of processes of vertebral arches and articular surfaces of the vertebral bodies, and (2) to trace the development of the ribs, particularly their joint surfaces. Study subjects are staged human embryos (from the 5th week) from the collecti

The first rare and fatal case of invasive aspergillosis of spinal cord due to Aspergillus nidulans in an Iranian child with chronic granulomatosis disease: review of literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) of the central nervous system (CNS) is a devastating complication which is rarely reported in immunocompromised children. In this case presentation, we reported a rare and fatal IA with spinal cord involvement in a 10-year-old child with X-linked chronic granulomatosis disease (CGD). CASE REPORT: The child had a previous history of pulmonary tuberculosis. A cervical spine X-ray revealed the involvement of cervical vertebrae (T4/T5) and ribs causing spinal cord compression and epidural abscess. The patient underwent a decompressive laminectom

Bilateral subclavian arteries passing in front of the scalenus anterior muscles.

Herein, we present a very rare case of bilateral subclavian arteries passing in front of the scalenus anterior muscles in a cadaver. This abnormality was observed in a 73-year-old Japanese male cadaver during a dissection session for students in 2004 at Osaka Dental University. The bilateral scalenus anterior muscle originated from the anterior tubercle of the transverse processes of the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae and inserted into the scalene tubercle of the first ribs. The right scalenus minimus muscle was observed, but no left scalenus minimus muscle was observed. The aortic arch wa

Lower Limb Nonvisualization Caused by Macroarterial Thrombosis After Cervical Cancer TP Chemotherapy in Whole-body Bone Scintigraphy.

A 68-year-old woman with cervical cancer and pulmonary metastases presented with limb paresthesia and pain one week after chemotherapy. Whole-body bone scintigraphy performed to evaluate for bone metastases revealed rib metastases, along with poor visualization of the right distal lower extremity, raising suspicion for possible arterial flow obstruction in the right lower limb. Further imaging confirmed extensive thrombosis in the right common iliac artery and its distal branches. This case suggests that decreased uptake in the skeletal structures and surrounding soft tissues on whole-body bon

Successful exclusion of subclavian aneurysms with covered nitinol stents.

Two cases of percutaneous endoluminal exclusion of a subclavian aneurysm with a Dacron-coated nitinol stent are presented. One subclavian aneurysm followed trauma; the other was due to thoracic outlet stenosis which was caused by a cervical rib. In both patients the aneurysm was excluded successfully. The follow-up periods were 22 and 14 months, respectively. Stenoses at the stent graft occurred in both patients; one was treated by balloon angioplasty. In selected patients, endoluminal grafting could be an alternative to surgery; however, stent graft designs need to be improved and long-term f…

Unilateral thoracic facet dislocation.

A unilateral facet dislocation is an injury classically localized to the cervical spine. A series of 3 unilateral thoracic facet dislocations are reported in 2 adults and 1 child. Each had severe concomitant injuries to the thorax, which caused respiratory compromise. On lateral radiographs, all had anterior vertebral body translation of less than 20% of the vertebral body width with minor degrees of kyphosis. Axial computed tomographic images showed a unilateral empty facet sign. All patients were neurologically intact and none had any mechanical pain at last followup. The mechanism of injury
